4 killed, 12 hurt as bus runs over jatha members

The bus (CH 03 Z 6565) of the Chandigarh Group of Colleges, which was set on fire by members of the sangat after the vehicle crushed its members in Sector 28, Chandigarh, on Saturday night In a major accident, four persons were killed and 12 seriously injured (till the filing of the report) when a Landran college bus ran over a nagar kirtan jatha.

PGI Incident: 2 policemen suspended
Chandigarh, June 18
Two policemen, including Balbir Singh who had allegedly created ruckus at the advanced cardiac centre (ACC) of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here on Thursday night, were put under suspension by the authorities here today.

87 autos impounded
Chandigarh, June 18
The local police today impounded as many as 87 auto-rickshaws for plying in the city without valid permit. Police sources said the auto-rickshaws belonged to the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana. Most vehicles were impounded near the inter-state bus terminuses of sectors 17 and 43. This private mode of transportation is not only a traffic hazard but also notorious for fleecing public by overcharging.

PUSU warring lobbies to patch up

In a significant move, the 34-year-old student organisation- Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU), which had officially split three months ago on March 15 into two lobbies, is now heading for a patch up.

Entrance exam on July 11

Dates for admission to two-year course in MSc (Petroleum Geology), which has 15 seats, have been announced by Panjab University. The last date to submit forms will be July 4. The forms can be downloaded from the university website www.puchd.ac.in and can be deposited at the Centre for Petroleum and Applied Geology (Aruna Ranjit Chandra Hall), PU campus.

A section of visitors at Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park today tormented a caged leopard for nearly 30 minutes in the absence of the zookeeper and forced the feline to consume liquor. A cellular company had adopted the leopard under the Animal Adoption Scheme.

A eunuch shobha yatra

Donning heavy jewellery and dressed in colourful attires, eunuchs from all over India got together to take part in a shobha yatra here yesterday. A symbolic marriage was also performed.

Second arrest in fraud case
Chandigarh, June 18
In a case of fraud involving over Rs 1 crore, the economic offences wing of the Chandigarh Police today arrested another accused, Vineet Handa, from Fortis Hospital, Mohali. This is the second arrest in the case this week, with the police earlier arresting Vineet’s brother Vikas Handa, owners of Villa Pearls, on June 14 following a complaint by Sector-38 resident Rakesh Kumar Gupta.

Vinay Kumar Singal of Sector 38 (West) complained to the police that his car (CH 03 Q 8622) was stolen from Sector 17 on June 14.

Cop commits suicide in Ambala
Ambala, June 18
Rajinder Kumar (45), a head constable of the Ambala police deployed in MV section, has allegedly committed suicide at his residence by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. The cause of his extreme step could not be ascertained so far.

NICS Academy defeated CCA and GNPS in the third Ashok Kumar Vij Memorial Cricket (U-14) Tournament being held at Banyan Tree School, Sector 48, here today. Batting first, local team set a target of 173 in the allotted 25 overs. Ram Bishoni made a brilliant ton off 68, whereas his counterpart Subham Chand contributed 29 runs in total.
