Jeweller-turned-robber arrested with 3 others
Fatehgarh Sahib, June 10 Jeweller Gurmeet Bhola started a jewellery shop in Sirhind after completing his graduation, but failed to continue with the business and formed a six-member gang of looters around a year ago. The gang is already facing criminal charges in various police stations of Punjab and Haryana. They admitted to have looted a Mandi Gobindgarh-based businessman at gunpoint and also made three futile attempts to loot a Patiala-based jeweller last month. The gang was also involved in firing gunshots on a police party in Mansa. The accused were arrested on a tip off from the Mandi Gobindgarh Focal Point where they were allegedly planning to commit more robberies last night. Mandi Gobindgarh SHO Bikramjit Brar said the mastermind of the gang was Gurmeet Bhola, who belonged to a well-to-do family of Sirhind. He roped in a driver, a carpenter and a blacksmith into his gang to commit crimes. The mastermind “invested” Rs 20,000 to purchase weapons, including a revolver, cartridges and swords for the purpose. They stole a Scorpio car from Patiala city and fixed a red beacon on it to loot the Mandi Gobindgarh-based businessman. One of their gang members, Jaspreet, alias Sonu, of Dera Meermiyan village worked as a driver of the businessman for four years and was aware of his ex-employers’ transactions. The businessman used to visit Sirsa every week to collect payments. The robbers looted Rs 25 lakh, including few cheques, from the businessman at gunpoint near Sirsa five days after stealing the Scorpio. The vehicle was stolen on May 30. After looting the businessman they headed towards Mansa where the police had already laid a trap near Jhunir. The accused opened fire on the police party and fled, leaving behind their vehicle. One of the gang members, however, was arrested by the police who was later identified as Dilbag Singh of Gegamajra village of Mohali. The four arrested last night, all residents of Fatehgarh Sahib villages, have been identified as Ravinder Singh, alias Manta of Tarkhanmajra village, Gurmeet Singh, alias Bhola of Brahmanmajra, Jaspreet, alias Sonu of Dera Meermiyan, Manpreet Singh, alias Manna of Mandofal. Gurcharan Singh, alias Charni of Geegemajra village in Mohali, was still absconding. A .315 bore revolver with four live cartridges, .32 bore pistol with three live cartridges, swords and a Maruti Zen car of the mastermind was recovered by the police from their possession. |

Taneja Developers told to refund Rs12 lakh
Chandigarh, June 10 In her complaint, Chanchal Narang stated that she had booked a plot with Taneja Developers in their MCP (II) project at Sectors 110 and 111, Mohali, by depositing Rs 12 lakh in September, 2008. As per the registration letter, the company was to offer the plot within 12 months. The complainant approached GMADA for knowing the status of the project. She was surprised to know that the developer had accepted the advance without obtaining the statutory clearance, in contravention of government stipulation. She was also told that the required approval and exemption was not granted till August, 2009. Since the allotment was not made to the complainant within a period of 12 months, as promised in the original letter of offer, she made some enquiries with the developer. When she could not get any satisfactory reply regarding the ongoing development, she asked for the refund of Rs 12 lakh. In its reply, the developer stated that no advertisement was ever given by the company in order to launch booking of plots in its project at Mohali. It said the complainant had deposited Rs 12 lakh with the company and got herself registered for the allotment of a commercial plot. An offer of allotment was sent to her on March 7, 2010, and later in September, 2010, but she refused to accept the offer and did not pay the remaining instalments as per the payment schedule. The forum, comprising its president Lakshman Sharma and members Ashok Raj Bhandari and Madhu Mutneja, stated that the complainant had convincingly proved her case that the developer illegally and wrongfully enticed her to make a booking of a commercial plot by accepting Rs 12 lakh and making a false promise of allotment within a stipulated time frame without getting clearance from the authorities at the time of booking and during the next one year or so. The forum stated that the act of making offers of booking of a plot without obtaining essential and mandatory clearances from the government authorities concerned was a clear deficiency in service and an unfair trade practice by the developer. |

Mohali, June 10 Pronouncing the order on a complaint filed by Bachan Singh Rai, a resident of Phase II, Mohali, the forum comprising BS Mehandiratta, president, Dr SS Dhaliwal and HK Ghuman, both members, directed the society to refund the cost of the flat with interest at a rate of 9 per cent per annum till the date of payment. The interest part has to be paid with effect from the date on which the cost of the flat had been deposited in instalments. The complainant stated that he became member of the society on March 22, 2004, soon after depositing the membership fee. He sought allotment of an HIG flat of three bedrooms to be built at Sector 68, Mohali. An amount of Rs 9,16,500 was deposited as the cost of the flat on being demanded by the society. The society also issued a provisional letter to the applicant. But later the society failed to allot him the flat, despite various representations, whereas other members and shareholders had been allotted flats. On being asked, the society stated that the complainant had failed to comply with the terms and norms of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority. It requested the complainant several times to submit the required affidavit, but the complainant failed to submit the same stating that he or his spouse or dependents did not own any residential house/plot/ flat at Mohali, Chandigarh and Panchkula. Due to this reason, the allotment of the flat had been cancelled. “Since the complainant is not entitled to allotment of a flat, the society should have refunded his deposited amount with interest,” the forum observed. |
