IMF ex-chief pleads not guilty
Strauss-Kahn faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted

New York, June 6
Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn entered a plea of not guilty today to charges he sexually assaulted a New York hotel maid in a case that cost him his job and a chance at the French presidency.

Wearing a dark suit, Strauss-Kahn arrived at the courthouse with his wife, French television journalist Anne Sinclair, walking beside him, arm-in-arm.

The couple walked past a throng of media and a large group of hotel workers there in solidarity with the woman who said Strauss-Kahn attacked her. “Shame on you,” they chanted.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted on charges including attempted rape, sex abuse, a criminal sex act, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching. Strauss-Kahn was asked what plea he would enter to the charges and he told the court clerk, “Not guilty.” The next date in the case at New York Supreme Court before Judge Michael Obus was set for July 18.

Praised for his role tackling the 2007-09 global financial crisis and attempts to keep Europe’s debt crisis under control, Strauss-Kahn resigned as managing director of the International Monetary Fund a few days after his May 14 arrest in the first-class section of an Air France plane, minutes before it was to depart New York for Paris.

He was accused of attacking a 32-year-old African immigrant a few hours earlier when she came to clean his suite at the luxury Sofitel hotel in Midtown Manhattan, apparently believing it had been vacated Strauss-Kahn, who has four daughters, denies the charges.

Monday’s arraignment marks the start of what could be lengthy legal proceedings. A new IMF chief has not yet been appointed. French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde and Mexican central bank chief Agustin Carstens both want to replace Strauss-Kahn.

Until the New York arrest, Strauss-Kahn had been expected to quit his IMF post for a different reason-a bid to become the Socialist candidate for president of France. He had been a strong favorite to beat conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy at the polls next year.

Hotel maid to testify

With iCloud, Apple set to take on Google

San Francisco, June 6
Apple Inc’s CEO Steve Jobs returns on Monday to the stage at San Francisco's Moscone center to take the wraps off what investors hope will be the next source of growth for the world's most valuable technology company.

Jobs, who has been on medical leave for months and last took the stage in March to present the iPad 2, will unveil the iCloud, a Web-based service that lets consumers stream music they bought to any Apple device, pitting it against rivals Google Inc and Amazon.com Inc.

That expansion into cloud computing is seen as crucial if the company is to stay competitive with increasingly popular open-sourced software, such as Google's Android operating system, according to analysts and investors.

The iCloud has the potential to make Apple's iTunes even more powerful, making it tougher for rivals to keep up, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said.

"It looks like Apple will likely offer some base service for free," Wu said. "Competitors, including RIM, Google, Amazon and Microsoft already have a hard time competing with iTunes as it is, but we believe will likely find it even tougher with iCloud enhancements."

Apple has been busy wrapping up negotiations with major record labels to secure licences for its iCloud service, which is also expected to include a revamped version of its little-known MobileMe storage service.

The licences will help Apple introduce scan-and-match technology that scans a user's hard drive and provides access to music found there from the company's own servers. Currently, Google and Amazon require users to upload their library of songs.

Some analysts say the iCloud has the potential to be a new model for media consumption, which could also spark more demand for Apple devices. — Reuters

What is iCloud service?

iCloud service puts movies, music and software on a cloud server. Having these offerings on a cloud server gives Apple some real benefits. This means they could possibly charge less for their products like iPad or phones. This means they wouldn’t need to have the capability to store as much locally since customers will be able to access their items via the cloud server.

Facebook party spins out of control

A teenage girl in Germany who forgot to mark her birthday invitation as private on Facebook fled her own party when more than 1,500 guests showed up and around 100 police officers, some on horses, were needed to keep the crowd under control.

Eleven persons were temporarily detained, one police officer was injured, dozens of girls wearing flip-flops cut their feet on broken glass and firefighters had to extinguish two small fires at the 16th birthday party in Hamburg, police spokesman Mirko Streiber said today.

The invitation quickly went viral, and some 15,000 people confirmed online they would come to the party without even knowing the girl, weekly paper Bild am Sonntag reported.

When Thessa’s parents found out, they made their daughter cancel the party, informed police and hired a private security service to protect their home on Friday night.

Despite public announcements in Hamburg that the party had been canceled, some 1,500 teenagers and young adults showed up on the street in front of Thessa’s home, Streiber said. — AP
