Worker dies at hotel
Lalru, June 1 The police initiated proceedings under Section 174, IPC, on the statement of a co-worker, Ram Singh, who belongs to Uttarakhand. He identified the deceased as 60-year-old Sudama, who had been working at Jeet Hotel for the past one year. However, the address of the deceased could not be confirmed by the hotel management. Sources said the victim fell to the ground and died while being shifted to a hospital.
Committee reviews implementation of central schemes in Ambala
Ambala, June 1 The nine members of the committee visited various places in the district to oversee the work of execution of schemes like MNREGA, Swaran Jayati Rojgar Yojna, Sarav Shiksha Abhiyan and Indira Awas Yojna, etc. The members also held a meeting with senior functionaries of different departments concerned with the implementation of the schemes. The standing committee led by Sumitra Mahajan (MP from Madhya Pradesh) and comprising members Dr Pulin Behari Baske (West Bengal), Sanjay Dhotra and Manik Rao Hodya Govit (both Maharashtra), Ansuya Udke and Maya Singh (MP), Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa (Punjab), Dr Ram Parkash (Haryana) and Mohan Singh (UP) visited Sehjadpur in the district and held a meeting with panches, sarpanches and villagers to elicit their views on the implementation of the execution of the schemes. Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow and other senior functionaries submitted an account of the implementation of various central rural development schemes. The committee members also reviewed the progress of computerisation of land and revenue records under the schemes. It found the work to be satisfactory and lauded the administration’s role. Under the computerisation of revenue records, important revenue documents like mutation are easily and readily available to farmers. People can get a copy of mutation online and also check revenue entries. The aim is to weed out corruption from the revenue department, the sources added. The committee members later went round an exhibition of handicraft prepared by Guru Ravi Das Society, an NGO, and placed on record their appreciation of the handicrafts, particularly sarees and embroidery work. |

GMADA staff raze 35 illegal structures
Mohali/Zirakpur, June 1 The enforcement wing had tough time facing protesters, who opposed the drive. However, the team carried on with the task despite protest by property owners. Sources said the drive had been long overdue and had not been carried out so far due to political pressures. The sources said at least six teams led by XENs from GMADA backed by the police demolished around 35 illegal structures at Sanoli, Kakrali, Bhankarpur, Chhat village, Saneta, Beri, Daun, Khijrabad and Majri. All teams worked under XEN, regulatory department, JS Tiwana, they added. Six JCB machines and around 250 enforcement wing employees along with police force were pressed into the service. At Zirakpur, the team started the operation by demolishing the wall of a marriage palace. However, they were faced with protests from the marriage palace employees. They left the site without taking any action. They then moved on to Chhat village where they planned to demolish the wall of a godown of an automobile company. However, the team had to return without carrying out any demolition. The enforcement wing then demolished a dhaba, a scrap dealer’s shop and illegal structures in Kakrali village, Dera Bassi. The sources said at Balongi, duty magistrate Sohan Singh, appointed for the drive, left the job midway around 5 pm. GMADA officials said they would complain to the Mohali Deputy Commissioner against the duty magistrate. An official said the structures were coming up in violation of the Periphery Act and more demolitions were expected in the coming days. |

Man, mother get life term for double murder
Ambala, June 1 Sources said Amit, husband of victim Kamlesh, and Devki, mother-in-law, both residents of Dalipgarh, near Ambala Cantonment, had allegedly set Kamlesh and her female child on fire by dousing them with kerosene on May 3, 2010. The two were killed in the incident. A case under Sections 302 and 304 B of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the Mahesh Nagar police station against the two on the complaint of Kamlesh’s father Shyam Lal, a resident of Mani Majra. Shyam Lal had alleged that his daughter had been continuously harassed by her in-laws for dowry ever since their marriage in 2008. |

Man robbed of car
Ambala, June 1 The victim, Thakur Das, filed a complaint with the police in which he claimed that three youths stopped his car between Shahpur and Durana and pushed him out of the vehicle before driving away in it. The police has registered a case against the youths. The police has been unable to find any clue to the identity of the robbers so far. |

Villagers meet SDM, seek repairs at Ghaggar
Rajpura, June 1 The villagers were led by Prem Singh Bhangu, Politburo member of the MCPI (United). He said they had earlier given a representation to the Patiala Deputy Commissioner, who had deputed the Rajpura SDM to look into the demands of area residents. They were called by the SDM to discuss their problems today. The villagers demanded immediate cleaning of siphons in the Ghaggar, removal of curves in the river, construction of a dam near Pinjore for irrigational purposes, construction of siphon on the river near Lachhru Khurd and Sogalpur villages, lifting of water for irrigational purpose towards north side of the Narwana branch, laying of metalled road from Ghanaur to Gandakheri and Jainagar, repair and widening of Rajpura to Kauli road a.k.a. Shaheed Prof Darbara Singh road to 18 feet, laying of metalled road from Lachhru Khurd to Rajpura, construction of road from Suemajra-Harpalpur to Majri Fakiran village, restoration of extra land of the Rajpura chemical factory to farmers, tehsil status to Ghanaur, 15-hour uninterrupted power supply for tube-well connections and curb on release of toxic water into the Ghaggar. Those who attended the meeting included Harkesh Singh Jhungian, Sewa Singh Bhaddak, Gurdeep Singh, Pawan Kumar Mogalpur, Prem Singh Nanwan, Iqbal Singh Mandoli, Niranjan Singh Sardargarh, Parminder Singh, Ranjeet Singh Mardapur and Labh Singh Bhangu. The members said they had earlier decided to stage a dharna outside the office of the Patiala Deputy Commissioner but had deferred it in view of assurance from the district administration. They, however, said they would start an agitation if their demands were not acceded within a stipulated period. |

Registration of new voters gets under way
Ropar, June 1 Bassi Pathana: The exercise to prepare voters’ list for 54 Bassi Pathana (R) Assembly constituency began here today. Teams had been deployed at respective polling stations to photograph voters till July 30. Booth-level officers had been deployed at every polling station, said Yashveer Mahajan, Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer in a press release here today. He said as per the directions of the election commission, new voters should fill out form No. 6 along with form No. 001A and submit these with booth-level officers of polling stations concerned along with two photographs. Existing voters who want to get mistakes corrected in their voters’ card can fill out form No. 8. |
LPG tanker overturns
Ambala, June 1 Naib tehsildar Satish Gupta and Sadar SHO Bharat Singh visited the scene and requisitioned technical help from Lalru’s LPG filling unit to plug the leakage. The tanker was put back on road with the help of a crane. The traffic was restored over half an hour later. |

Patiala students pass with flying colours
Patiala, June 1 Twenty-two students have got CGPA 10, three 9.8, two 9.6, eight 9.4, nine 9.2 and 11 have got nine. From DAV School, Bhupindra Road, Patiala, 20 students got CGPA 10. A total of 184 students took this exam and the result of the school was 100 per cent. In Bhupindra International Public School, Gursharan Singh topped the school by attaining A2 grade with 93 per cent marks and Navkiran Kaur, too, got A2 grade and scored 89 per cent marks. Students of Career Academy School, Patiala, also achieved 100 per cent result. Two students, Parul Goyal and Jasmeet Mann, scored CGPA 10 and 11 students scored CGPA above 9. Eight students scored CGPA above eight. Forty-two students of Guru Nanak Foundation Public School scored CGPA nine and above whereas 34 students scored CGPA between eight and 8.9. In Apollo Public Senior Secondary School, Akashjot Kaur, Komalpreet Kaur and Gursukhmani scored CGPA 10. The result of the school was 100 per cent. |

Gang of vehicle thieves busted, 4 held
Chandigarh, June 1 The police has arrested Satish Kumar, alias Bagri, Ali Hassan, Surinder Kumar, alias Advani, all residents of Biwani, and Vishal Mittal, a resident of Rajasthan. The accused were members of the notorious Bagri gang. They were arrested from Mauli Jagran. All the accused were travelling in a car when they were stopped for routine verification. It was later found that they were using fake registration number on a stolen car. The accused are professional auto thieves and have been arrested earlier by police of different states. Eighteen vehicles, mostly luxury cars, were recovered from their possession. A joint team comprising inspector Ranjit Singh, sub-inspector Rajdeep Singh and sub-inspector Tarsem Singh under the supervision of DSP (PCR) Roshan Lal busted the notorious Bagri gang. During last one month, the Chandigarh Police claimed have busted three inter-state auto lifter gangs and have recovered 45 vehicles, including expensive cars including Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Corolla Altis, Mahindra Scorpio and Mahindra Bolero. The cost of vehicles recovered is said to be over Rs 1 crore. A team of the crime branch headed by inspector Amanjot Singh under the supervision of DSP (Crime) Satbir Singh had earlier arrested four members of an auto-lifter gang. The accused have been identified Ompal Singh, resident of Amroha, Manoj Thakur, Kasri Singh and Israr Khan, all residents of resident of Muradabad. With their arrest, 10 cases were solved. Three members of gang were earlier arrested in separate cases of vehicle thefts, dacoity, robbery and burglary. In another case, a team of the Sector 11 police station headed by sub-inspector Harminderjit Singh under supervision of SHO, Sector 11 police station, inspector Gurmukh Singh arrested two persons, Randhir Singh and Surmukh Singh, both residents of SAS Nagar, and seven vehicles were recovered fro their possession. |

2 killed, 12 hurt in accident
Panchkula, June 1 Out of the 12 injured, one has been referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. The two deceased have been identified as maxicab driver Monu and motorcyclist Ashwani, both residents of Pinjore. The injured, identified as Gurbachan Singh, Manjit, Mandeep, Chanchal, Ajay, Mamraj, Divya, Gurjeet, Gangaram, Lucky and Gurmeet, have been admitted to the General Hospital, Sector 6, here. The injured who was referred to the PGI was yet to be identified. All those injured are residents of Kalka and Pinjore. According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when a truck coming from Pinjore hit a median and overturned, resting on a portion of a packed maxicab ferrying passengers from Panchkula to Pinjore. Its driver Monu was killed on the spot. Also, a motorcycle coming from Pinjore hit the wreckage, killing the rider, Ashwani, on the spot. The police said they had booked the truck driver, who abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Kharar: Nine persons, including eight members of a family from Delhi, were injured in a road accident near the bus station here today. A police officer said Puneet Jain and his brother-in-law Kapil Jain were on their way to Manali along with their families to spend summer vacations. The families were travelling in an Innova taxi. Around 4 am, the taxi driver dozed off and lost control of the vehicle near the bus station. The vehicle rammed into a stationary tractor-trailer, injuring nine persons. The taxi was badly damaged in the accident. All vehicle occupants, including Puneet Jain, Kapil Jain, Barkha Jain, Ruchi Jain and their children Aryan, Prabal, Uditya and Pragati and the driver, suffered injuries. They were taken to the local Civil Hospital from where Kapil Jain and Barkha were referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, with serious injuries. Kapil and Barkha have since been shifted to a private hospital in Mohali. Puneet Jain is a paper trader, while Kapil is a cloth merchant. The police is investigating the case. |

Local lad makes it to U-19 kabaddi camp
Chandigarh, June 1 Kamlesh will attend a month long camp at SAI Centre, Kandivili, Mumbai, from June 10 to July 9. The player, who has honed his skills at the Kabaddi Coaching Centre, Sector 42, is playing kabaddi from the past six years and has also represented the city at various national-level tournaments. He has also represented the city in the Junior National Kabaddi Championship held in Chattisgarh, Senior National Kabaddi Tournament held in New Delhi. He was also a member of the Panjab University Inter-College Kabaddi team which bagged a gold medal in the recently-held Inter-College Kabaddi Championship at PU, Chandigarh. “I am happy and looking forward to attend the camp. My aim is to give my best so that I can make it to the final list of the players,” stated Kamlesh Sharma. According to Devinder Singh Kholi, coach at Coaching Centre, Sector 42, the player will leave for Mumbai on June 8. “His hard work has paid off. He has been working hard to make it to the final list. City archer hits bull’s eye
Chandigarh, June 1 Anil Kumar and his team earned 224 points out of total 240 points, trailing behind Singapore team in the compound event at the eight-day meet, which concluded today. The three-member team from India tops the chart after defeating all 17 teams participating in the tournament, including ace archers of countries like Malaysia, Hong Kong and Korea. Talking to Chandigarh Tribune over phone immediately after his triumph, elated Anil Kumar said, “I am on cloud nine at the moment. It’s really difficult to describe my feeling in words. Now I can say with proud that I have done something for my country.” The player is now aiming to represent the country in the upcoming World Archery Championship Stage-III. The tournament, which is schedule to be held at China in July, will be the main qualifier stage for the upcoming Olympics. “I will now concentrate to secure a berth in the team, which will represent the country at the upcoming World Archery Championship Stage-III,” said Anil Kumar. The elated local archery coach at the Lake Sports Complex, Vikas Shastri stated his win as the start of his international career.

Panchkula, June 1 Malhotra dominated the proceedings from the word ‘Go’. Malhotra banked upon his topspin backhand and forehand volleys to left Udhayan exhausted in a one-sided affair. After clinching the first set 6-2, Malhotra was 4-0 ahead in the second set. After that Udhayan clinched two games but lost to Sachit 2-6.
