Struggle… each one of us have dealt with it in our own way, either taking it by the horns, cowing down to it or ignoring it conveniently. These three individuals posing for the shutterbugs have had their up, close and personal moments with struggle. But now, it's a thing of the past, because they have turned it around in their favour to create a story, a success story if one can say! Filmmaker Subhash Ghai along with Sahil Mehta and Mannat Ravi, the cast of upcoming movie Love Express, share how they gave life a big fight, and how dreams were brought to reality. Dream Merchant
He is known to be the director with the Midas Touch. He has the knack of picking fresh faces for his movies, he is the man who maintains an equilibrium between hit and flops. Ghai has been ruffled, tossed up in the air, burnt by the heat, hit by the showers of struggle, and he knows what it means. "I had to stand outside offices for the people to even listen to me. I have seen what struggle is because I have experienced it closely," he shares with the students of Whistling Woods on Careers in Media and Communication. Now, this is where the making of the maverick began. "There is a long distance between dreams and opportunity. You can keep dreaming all your life, but the real test begins when you are given an opportunity to perform. In this case we are talking about acting," he says trying not to philosophise the whole dialogue. With Ghai, you can sit back and relax for he does all the talking. "The time has changed. I ask struggling aspiring actors not to follow wrong examples. You cannot be an overnight star. They should know the nuances of acting, of what goes behind in making of an actor. For this we have an acting school like Whistling Woods, which is the result of my research and passion so that I can prepare them for acting and struggle days ahead! Is it a dream?
Sahil is one of the leading guys in Love Express, hand- picked by the director while he was learning to act in Whistling Woods. This is the beginning, but the guy already knows how to spell struggle left to right and right to left. "Every youngster who wants to create a space in Bollywood has to struggle. This is the time, which makes or breaks the person and passion both," chips in Sahil, who by the way always dreamt of being an actor. How new! More on encounters with struggle? "Struggle actually starts when you are out from the acting school. Auditions are not always pleasant, we have to face rejection, shifting to Mumbai, being lonely, handling money… there are many things a struggler has to face. We have to keep it together if we have to survive," Sahil, who is under contract with Mukta Arts for five years, talks like a pro already. Way to go guy! Dream come true
Mannat Rai, the leading lady, is short of words for the obvious reason. It is a dream come true for this Delhite, and the feeling hasn't sunk in yet. So far so good. Mannat too doesn't dismiss the fact that there are more strugglers in the industry than anywhere else. "The good thing, however, is that people like Subhash Ghai realise new talent, and are willing to give them a chance." Godfather, we drop the word, the lady shrugs, "I have no one. I just have Subhash Ghai who has invested his faith on me," she smiles. Here is what we want to say, there is long road from dreams to a reality check in life! What say, Mr Ghai! jasmine@tribunemail.com |
A reason for glee
We checked, rechecked if something was wrong with the TV, if the channels got jumbled up like it happens on radio. What else could have been the reaction to the promo of Glee's Season 2, where every character is shown to lip sync the song Character Dheela? Surprisingly, the track from Salman Khan's Ready introduces the new season of the popular Star World series. Bollywood beats are sneaking into the foreign TV channels and this isn't the only example. Another show, So You Think You Can Dance, will have its contestants dance to the tune of Munni Badnam Hui. It's a reverse trend, where East is visiting West, unlike when we had Kylie Minogue doing a Chiggy Wiggie in Blue or Akon lending his voice for Ra.One. This time, Bollywood beats have travelled to the foreign shores and are being well accepted for several reasons. "There is no denying the fact that Bollywood music now has an international appeal. The beats are racy and suit the liking of music lovers around the world," comes from Jaidev Kumar, music director of hit film, Dharti. He feels that the customisation of music as per the western standards has made all the difference. "We have rappers collaborating for many songs. Then, there also are a few rock numbers. Experiments like Munni Badnam Hui and Sheila Ki Jawaani are appreciated worldwide," adds Jaidev, who is also composing music for Bollywood films. The latest in the league of the Bollywood music fan is Lady Gaga. In April, she released the Bollywood remix of her super hit single, Born this Way. She is soon coming up with the Bollywood version of Judas. The duo of Salim-Sulaiman will remix the songs. "Bollywood music is the flavour of the season," feels Jug Mundhra, who has made movies for Hollywood and Bollywood (Read Provoked and Bawander). According to him some credit for the popularity of Bollywood music goes to the economic power that India has become. As Jug says, "Success of arts in a country is directly proportional to the success of the economy. For the same reason, Bollywood has become the next international music hub. The way music composers and singers are collaborating with International artistes is phenomenal." Renowned music composer Bappi Lahiri will now be teaming up with MC Rapper after working with Samantha Fox and Boy George. But what's striking is that Jennifer Lopez will use Bappi's Lambada tune of Ghayal movie (1992) in her song, On the Floor. When it comes to songs like Munni Badnam Hui or Dilli Dilli from the movie No One Killed Jessica (NOKJ), there were no elements like rap, hip hop or rock that contributed towards its popularity. “What made them a hit was their crudeness,” says Raj Kumar Gupta, director of the NOKJ. What primarily decides the fate of a song is how popular it is in the party circuit. “If people love to dance to a tune in India, it would gradually become popular overseas same as Western songs,” he says. ashima@tribunemail.com |

A group of super car owners made their presence felt like never before in Chandigarh on Sunday. The cars which spell luxury, power and passion caught everyone's eye…the occasion was launch of the Chandigarh edition of the famous Delhi-based Cannonball Club. The club boasts of India's premium super car owners as its members. Cannonball India, in association with Citibank, organised a high-powered drive and an exclusive social evening for its members. Paritoish Gupta, founder-owner of the club, says "I knew that there was a communication gap among owners of sports car in Delhi." The club was formed to improve networking among them. Formed in 2009, the club has a huge fan following on Facebook. The club also organises regular meets around Delhi. “I just took a step ahead and decided to do the homework for cars, routes, the owners and brought them together," Paritosh shares. What brought him to Chandigarh, he says, "The roads in Chandigarh are the best in the region. Car owners from here approached me again and again to launch the club here. So we finally decided to have a supercar show here,” he smiles. He and his team of eight friends keep busy all day working on the fine detailing down to the zero. Hobnobbing with the BMWs were the sleek Porsches’ at the Taj. Dhruv Talwar, owner of Talwar Jewellers in Sector 22, justified picking up his metallic delight for its comfort factor. "When it comes to a sports car, it's not only the performance but also comforts that matters. Nothing beats Porsche in sports performance and comfort. 911 is a benchmark in sports cars," he shares. Varun Malhotra, a lawyer from Chandigarh, spells his passion for cars, "I always had an inclination towards sports cars. Since Porsche was the only company with a showroom in Chandigarh, I was sure maintenance would be easy, so Porsche 911 it was." Ankush Nath, another supercar owner bought his Porsche Cayenne four years back and did not stop at that as he picked up a Jaguar XFR around a year ago. "Cayenne is one of the rare cars, which is both a sports car as well as a SUV but the Jaguar is pure muscle," he says. This bachelor got in touch with the club over the Internet and fell in love with its concept. "It's fun to be a part of a melting pot, where you can interact with like-minded people, sit and share a few laughs and strengthen your network, not only for the cars but also for business," he shares. So how did it feel to own one of these super wheels? "When you get a call from the showroom that your car is here and you rest your eyes on your baby, it's same as the feeling parents experience when they see their child for the first time. The million dollar smile is priceless when you know it's all yours," he smiles. (Some names have been changed to protect identity) vasudha@tribunemail.com |
The unconventionally talented and humourous Farhan Akhtar is back in action. The actor will be seen in sister Zoya Akhtar's next Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara along with Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif and Kalki. Farhan Akhtar recently performed at a concert in Mumbai. We spoke to the happening and multi-talented man about his favourite music. Happy tune
Music is my passion. I love watching videos and listening to music as well. It gives me happiness, it's my best companion. My dad used to discuss music while we were growing up. So, we also fell in love with music. Passion unlimited
I play music because it's my hobby. I wanted to be a director and when I became a director, I realised I should act too. And then I thought let's bring in my hobby to my work too. Then I converted my hobby into my profession. I will play a musician again. I loved doing it in Rock On! which is one of the best films of my career. Favourite singers
I hardly listen to Bollywood music. I am a fan of rock music. With Rock On!, we wanted to bring back Hindi rock closer to mainstream audiences. So, we composed the music carefully and thanks to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy who kept telling me to take my own time regarding singing. One of my favorite bands is The Beatles. You can act, dance, and direct. Is there anything you can't do? (Laughs) Yes, there are lots of things which I can't do but I have learnt them during the shooting for Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara. I couldn't do scuba diving because of a sinus problem but I did it in ZNMD. I can't pat my head while rubbing my stomach. I can't say 'red lorry yellow lorry' five times really fast without messing up. There are many more! Current favorite track
The other day I was listening to Ram Sampath's Delhi Belly song DK Bose and I loved the way he has sung and composed it. It's a rock song, so my current favorite is that one. You have to wait for ZNMD's music, it's just mind blowing. Sindbad the Sailor is my favourite from the songs I have sung. — HRM |
Screen vibes
Agent Vinod Saif's second production has been delayed by more than a year. There were stories of creative differences between Sriram Raghavan and Saif and even about Saif and Dinesh Vijan going their separate ways. Apparently, the movie went over-budget. The movie has also been in the news for its exotic European and African locations. Kareena got injured while shooting and Saif trained in different types of martial arts. The film releases on December 9. Aarakshan Saif Ali Khan who is a chotte nawab has portrayed a member from the Dalit caste in Prakash Jha's Aarakshan. The Dali community didn't take very kindly to this projection. They sent a letter to the production house and even destroyed some sets in Bhopal. Saif said the community should have at least watched the film before forming their opinion and doing something like this.
Rock Star The best publicity for this film has come from stories about Ranbir Kapoor and newcomer Nargis Fakhri getting too close for comfort. All this spiralled into stories about Ranbir and Katrina breaking up because of Fakhri. Imtiaz's original ending showed Ranbir dying but he has probably changed it. Pritam wasn't too happy that Imtiaz had chosen AR Rahman over him. Pritam and Ali have successfully collaborated on Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal. Aditi Rao Hydari is the film's best kept secret. Ra.One The biggest film of SRK's career and of this year has been in the news since the day it was conceived. There were stories of SRK ghost directing it, Karan Johar directing certain scenes, and SRK being unhappy with certain scenes. The movie supposedly bears a resemblance to Robot. Akon flew down to record a song for the film. Kareena lost weight for a super-hot song in it. Arjun Rampal shaved his gorgeous locks for the film and quoted a high price which SRK had to agree to. The trailer was released recently and generated a very positive buzz. The movie has a nine-month long promotional strategy and releases around Diwali. Murder 2 Jacqueline Fernandez raised eyebrows when she signed this film. She has an ultra-bold role because she plays a pin-up girl. Her friends Sajid Khan and Riteish Deshmukh advised her not to do this film. Her chemistry with Emraan has generated a lot of buzz and the PR has pumped interest in the film by periodically releasing stills of the sizzling scenes in the film. The sequel is nothing like the original and is based on the Nithari killings that happened a few years ago.
The Dirty Picture The subject of this film is controversial as it is based on Southern porn star Silk Smitha's life. Vidya Balan will turn the heat on with Emraan Hashmi, Tusshar Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah. —HRM

Deepika Padukone's career is on an all-time high. She will be seen next in Aarakshan and has two other films with Saif Ali Khan along with Desi Boyz and a big film with Rajnikanth. Her personal life is also blooming with Siddharth Mallya. Yet, the pretty girl has her head planted firmly on her shoulders. Her success and achievements have not gone to her head. She talks about having a career in Bollywood. Glamour world
When I was a child, I was fascinated by Bollywood. So somehow I knew that I will end up there. I took up modeling and loved it. I just loved walking the ramp wearing beautiful dresses. My dream came true when I got a break opposite SRK in Om Shanti Om. Believe me, I couldn't sleep for two nights when I signed the film. I was so happy that I was going to work with SRK, my dream man. I feel so great when I recollect those moments. Dream role
Whichever director approaches me and if I like the idea, then I take it as a dream role. Every role is new and I have to do justice to it because the director has faith in me and I have to prove myself. Every role is like a dream role for me. Of course, Om Shanti Om was a dream film for me. Different strokes
I have a long way to go as I have done only a few films and there are far better actresses than me. I am glad that some of the best directors have shown faith and interest in me and given me a platform to showcase my talent. I have never repeated myself in any of my films and will try not to do that. Wish list
I wanted to share the screen with Amitabh Bachchan and Prakasha Jha has made my dream come true. I really want to work with Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, like any other newcomer. —HRM |
You can work it out!
The weather has changed to sweltering hot mornings and sticky and humid evenings. And this time of the year that restricts people's fitness regime mostly to swimming. If you are someone who regularly workout at a fitness club or exercise at home, you may find it difficult to keep up your activity-level during the summer months as the weather makes you lethargic. Though exercising indoors can be less than motivating if you are the type who prefers to spend time in a park jogging or walking by the lake, there are certain summer activities to keep you fit without going out. GET PHYSICAL
People try so many different methods to get a flat stomach and often end up disappointed. A flat stomach is not an easy feat. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment to achieve and maintain a flat stomach. Exercise alone is not the key. A lean midsection means a combination of good nutrition, cardiovascular conditioning and abdominal training and a lot of hard work.
Abdominal training Stomach exercises are a great tool to use on your quest to get a flat stomach. Exercises help tone your stomach and shape your ab muscles. There are various exercises to achieve this. Given below are some exercises to start with. Ab crunches Lying on your back, put your knees up in the air so that your thighs are at a right angle to your torso, with your knees bent. If you like you can rest your feet on something, like a chair. Put your hands either behind your head or gently touching the sides of your head. Now, slowly raise your shoulders off the ground and try to touch your breastbone to your pelvis, breathing out as you go. Although the actual movement will be very small (your upper torso should move through less than 30 degrees), you should try to go as high as possible. Only your spine should bend, your hips should not move. Do these slowly to avoid using momentum to help. Reverse crunch This exercise can be done on the ground or on an incline sit-up board. All you need is something behind your head to hold. If you use the incline board, use it with your feet lower than your head. Lying on your back, hold a weight or a chair leg (if lying on the floor) or the foot bar (if using the sit-up board). Keep the knees slightly bent. Pull your pelvis and legs up so that your knees are above your chest and then return to beginning position. Make sure that you don't start swinging. You want your abs to do the work, not momentum. Make sure your pelvis moves, your lower back stays neutral or slightly rounded, not arched, and that your abs are doing the work, not your hips. Bicycle Lie flat on the floor with your lower back pressed to the ground. Put your hands beside your head. Bring your knees up to about a 45-degree angle and slowly go through a bicycle pedal motion. Touch your left elbow to your right knee, then your right elbow to your left knee. Breathe evenly throughout the exercise. CARDIO EXERCISES You need to have an overall fat burning regime. You can do all the crunches in the world but if you have a layer of flab covering up your tummy, no one is going to see the fruits of your labour. Cardiovascular exercises, whether it's running, walking, or taking a cycling or dance class, can help burn calories. Combined with a balanced diet, aerobic exercise helps you lose the fat built up above the muscle. 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 4 to 5 times a week is enough. DIET Exercising is great, but without watching your diet, it's going to be a long, slow road to getting a flat stomach. For your abdominal muscles to show, you have to shed the fat that lies on top. So, follow a good sensible diet. Eat more protein as these will keep you feeling fuller for longer ,Go in for whole grains for your carb requirements. Add fiber to your diet. Avoid sugar and extra fats and drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. kalrasachin@hotmail.com |

Pagani Zonda C12 F. occupies the fifth spot in the dream car list. The car produced by a small independent company in Italy, the Pagani Zonda is the fifth fastest car in the world. Speeding at 215 mph and accelerating to 60mph in 3.5 seconds, the car is famous for its unusually strange shape, comes at a price tag of Rs 3.33 crore. A breed of cat called the Egyptian mau worshipped in the days of Pharaohs had been a source of inspiration for Egypt's Pharaonic fashion, says an expertThese cats were considered sacred at the time, and were worshipped and immortalised through many of the ancient Egyptians' artifacts and temples. "When you look at evidence documenting the way ancient Egyptian women dressed, you can see they wore necklaces similar to the natural markings around the collars of Egyptian Maus," says veterinarian Abdel Rahman Sameh Fahmy. This influence is also echoed in the makeup worn at the time, which emphasized a certain eye shape resembling that of the Egyptian Mau," Egypt's Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper quoted Fahmy as saying. Given the high regard these cats once held in the Egyptian society, it's surprising that they are endangered today. The centre gives shelter and medical care to stray Maus, according to the report Friday. ––IANS |

Producer Ekta Kapoor and director Milan Luthria have banned the use of mobile phones on the sets of their keenly awaited The Dirty Picture. The entire unit, including the actors' staff and visitors will be required to deposit their phones with the production crew before coming on the set, when the film goes into production on Monday. The makers are keen to keep the novel look of the film very closely guarded till the right time and do not want any images of MMS clips leaking out. Most significantly, as the film depicts Vidya Balan in a bold, never-seen-before avatar, the actress is also said to have endorsed the makers' no-mobiles policy. Remarks Ekta Kapoor, "To put it succinctly, the look is very Moulin Rouge meets Himmatwala. TDP will be a good-looking, humourous, and soulful romantic drama, with music at its core." Hairy tale
Double Dhamaal is sure generating a lot of buzz. Thanks to unique costumes, get-ups and gags…well here's a funny incident from the sets of the film, created by one of the costumes! During the song shoot of Oye Oye (rights bought from T-Series for its remake), Kangana Ranaut had scenes wherein she gets close to Riteish Deshmukh, who is opposite her in the film, and she had a lot of problem doing so. Thanks to his African retro disguise! Riteish wears a huge Afro wig as part of his costume and Kangana couldn't get close to perform her scenes which included a kiss on the cheek, as the wig kept coming in between. After a lot of takes, they finally managed to shoot it somehow, with different dance moves. Thanks to the brilliant Ganesh Acharya! A long wait
