Railway employees pay tributes to martyrs
Kalka, May 29 The event was organised at the Kalka Railway Station, which was chaired by Shiv Gopal Mishra, general secretary of the All-India Railway Men’s Federation, New Delhi, and Harbhajan Singh, president, NRMU. Railway employees, holding red flags, started a procession from the railway station and paid homage to the martyrs at their Samadhi (tombs). Various union leaders, including Subhash Sharma, Pushpinder Sharma, Surinder Johny and Shiv Kumar condemned the anti-employees policies of the government. A delegation of local railway union also submitted a memorandum to Shiv Gopal Mishra. Their demands included action for scarcity of water, deplorable link roads, sewerage system, construction of new railway residential houses, renovation of Railway Institute and Railway Community Hall, and to depute lady doctors in Kalka and Shimla Railway hospitals. |

Village residents block national highway
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 29 The deceased has been identified as Amrik Singh of Miyapur village. Besides the body, motorbike of the victim, too, got damaged. Residents alleged that accidents have increased due to chaos on the road, as heavy tipper trucks used to dump soil and stones adjoining the highway. Suspecting negligence by truck driver, village residents demanded stringent action and blocked the highway for over an hour. The blockade was opened after senior police officials reached the spot and promised necessary action. During investigation, the police found three slippers besides the dead body and suspected that one more person could have accompanied the victim. Also, it was found that a man with minor injuries was roaming around the accident site. The police suspects that some passerby must have helped that man reach the village. Though the police traced the man within a few hours, but he failed to give satisfactory replies to the police. He was brought to the police station where he admitted to have accompanied the victim last night when the truck hit their bike. The man was identified as Baljinder Singh, a resident of Miyapur village. Investigating officer Nirmal Singh said the victim and Baljinder seems to have consumed liquor at Jeonpur village and were returning to Miyapur village on bike. Baljinder accompanied the victim when the truck hit their bike and managed to escape with minor injuries. The officer said the tipper had been identified. However, no arrests have been made in this regard. A case under various sections has been registered. |

Search on, no result so far
Ambala, May 29 Talking to The Tribune, Mukesh Ahuja, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Ambala, said divers from Madhuban and Nangal were kept into service to look for the bodies of the two youths, who were washed away in the water of Narwana feeders last evening. Both the victims hail from Chandigarh and had gone for a drive. They decided to take a dip at Narwana feeder near Jansui and the two were washed away. Suman Kapoor, Sahil’s mother, said Sahil came to her office around 4 pm yesterday and asked for Rs 500 saying one of his friends had met with an accident. She said she tried reaching him on his mobile phone around 6.30 pm and the call was answered by Abhinav, Sahil’s friend. Suman said Abhinav told her that Sahil had got drowned in the Narwana feeder where they had come for a drive and decided to take a dip. She said she rushed to the spot. The police and other officials of the district administration were already present at the site. She said divers started their search for the bodies today morning again, but no result. They searched about 5 km stretch of the canal. SDM Mukesh Ahuja said the search was called off in the evening. He said now the bodies were likely to surface after 48 hours and vigil would be kept at Khanauri head works tomorrow. Five boys, including three from Chandigarh and two from Ludhiana were travelling from Chandigarh to Jansui near Ambala. Abhinav Puri, a resident of Chandigarh, told the Naggal Police that he, along with four others, including Sahil, Nitish, Rahul and Rohit had come from Chandigarh for a picnic. When they reached near Jansui village they planned to take a dip in the canal. When Nitish and Sahil stepped into the canal they slipped and got washed away. Other three friends tried to rescue them, but all in vain. |

INLD leader alleges step-motherly treatment by Selja
Kalka, May 29 The report states that under the MP Local Area Development Fund, not even a single penny of the grant has been spent in Panchkula during 2010-11, despite the fact that under the same fund, from 2004 to 2011 Rs 1.53 crore had been sanctioned for Panchkula district, meanwhile Rs 7.27 crore for Ambala district and Rs 4.47 crore for Yamuna Nagar. Residents welcome trial Heritage Walk
Patiala, May 29 The walk started from Shahi Samadhan and ended at Qila Mubarak, passing through the old city areas of Chatta Nanu Mal, Kasera Chowk, Roop Chand Street and Darshani Gate, covering a distance of around 2 km. Adviser to the board, Debashish Nayak, who has also worked as an adviser to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation for organising a similar walk in Ahmedabad, is working on the project, along with Ravee S Aahluwalia, chief functionary of the Patiala Foundation. Around 15 eminent personalities, including KS Jatana, Balbir Singh billing advocate, Sarabjit Singh from INTACH, Patiala, Tarsem Bansal, Aruna Sharma and Sanjiv Jain from Chatta Nanu Mal, Dr Naveen, RS Bhinder, Nikhil, Dr Nidhi, Bhupesh, Pritpal Singh and officials from the Tourist Information Centre, Patiala, took this trial walk to rediscover their own city. The wonderful hospitality and enthusiasm of the residents of Chatta Nanu Mal overwhelmed the entire group. Ravee S Ahluwalia said the Patiala Foundation would soon be starting a Patiala Green Cabs heritage tour on a similar pattern covering the walled city of Patiala and its various heritage sites, including the local traditional food. |

Scholarships for meritorious students
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 29 These scholarships were applicable on tuition fee of all courses offered by the CGI. To motivate aspiring
professionals, the CGI would award toppers ofvarious streams with scholarships in the form of tuition fee. Full scholarships would be awarded for international mechanical engineering, bachelor of computer science and BE (aircraft maintenance) programmes for one student each on the tuition fee of the first year in each programme. Scholarships at the time of admission would be for students of international mechanical engineering, bachelor of computer science and BE programmes. Those with a grade of 6.5 and above in the IELTS at the time of admission would be given a Rs 7,000 waiver on fee, which was applicable on all programmes. Based on class XII examinations, students securing from 70 per cent to 79.99 per cent would get a Rs 60,000 waiver on fee, those securing from 80 per cent to 89.99 per cent would get a Rs 80,000 waiver and students securing 90 per cent and above would get a Rs 1,00,000 fee waiver. |

Rice millers demand ban on cultivation
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 29 A meeting of the Rice Millers Association was presided over by its district president Inderjit Singh Sandhu wherein state press secretary Nakesh Jindal was also present. Millers alleged that damage in this variety was comparatively more than other rice varieties grown inPunjab and pinhead ofthe rice grain was black. The millers refused to accept grains of this variety citing various problemsin it. Nakesh said besides creating a dint in the income of rice millers, delay in the milling process had also led to losses to the government and non-government procurement agencies. The agencies and millers had spent crores of rupees on storing the unmilled rice, which led to losses, alleged the millers. Despite extending the date of milling numerous times the pending 1-lakh tonne rice, out of 25 lakh tonne, purchased in 2009-2010, was yet to be milled in Punjab. This time its deadline was May 15. “Farmers continue to cultivate PAU-201 variety despite the ban by the government and this practice should be stopped immediately,” said a miller. Dhruv 24, Kunal 21 and Parash 16 were the highest scorers from DMW, while Karamjot of BECC was the most successful bowler, who took five wickets for 19 runs. BECC chased the target easily in 16 overs after loosing two wickets. In another match that was played at YPS, Patiala, Dronacharya Cricket Foundation Delhi, defeated YPS, Patiala, by one wicket in a close match. Electing to bat first, YPS scored 79 runs in 35 over match. Delhi boys chased the target in 30 overs after loosing nine wickets. Scores DMW Patiala: 92 all out in 28 overs. 2 car thieves arrested, stolen vehicles recovered
Mohali, May 29 According to the police, during a naka near Balongi, a police party intercepted the duo while travelling in a Maruti car bearing registration no CHT 5813. When questioned, they admitted that the car had been stolen from Sector 67 a few days ago. The original registration no CHK 5813 had been replaced with the fake number. They were taking the car to a scrap dealer. They also confessed to have stolen three other cars - two Esteem cars (bearing registration nos CH01N 0483 and PB 61 7313), a Maruti car (CH01T-9673) and two Caliver motor cycles (PB13C-8072 and HR03D-7126). All the stolen vehicles have been recovered from them. |

Manish restricts Bathinda to 179 runs
Mohali, May 29 Mohali were at 48 for two at draw of stumps of the today’s play. After opting batting first, Bathinda openers, Sangram Singh and Manpreet Singh, put on 49 runs for the first wicket in 17.3 overs before Manpreet Singh was caught and bowled by Gurpartap Singh for 12. While Sangram Singh continuously intact the one end, the wickets kept on falling at regular intervals at the other end. Sangram Singh (80 runs knock in 143 balls) was studded with 11 boundaries. He was caught and bowled by Manish. Manish captured six for 68. In their reply, Mohali were 48 for two in 21 overs at draw of stumps. Kinderpreet (19) and Maninder Singh (11) were at the crease when today’s play was called off. Mohit steers Airtel XI to victory
Panchkula, May 29 Batting first after winning the toss, ICICI Bank XI batsmen failed to put on a big total and gave up at 116 runs in 19.2 overs. The Airtel team overhauled the target in just 13.4 overs at the loss of four wickets. Earlier, most of the ICICI batsmen failed to reach the double figures. Gaurav Vaid showed some sort of substance with his defiant knock of 51 runs, studded with eight boundaries. Anuj Sharma was the most successful bowler for Airtel, picking up three for 14. During their chase of target, Airtel XI got off fine, as the openers put on quick 29 runs for the first wicket. The first over witnessed 15 runs. Later, Mohit Gupta steered the team to easy victory with his unbeaten 72 runs off 48. For ICICI, Amit Gupta took two for 28. In the second match, Dell XI recorded a convincing 33-run victory over Basware XI. Batting first, Dell XI mustered 165 runs for the loss of four wickets. In reply, Basware XI fell short of the target by 33 runs in the allotted overs. Dell’s Paritosh Dhabhol hit unbeaten 57 runs in 50 balls followed by Upinder Singh, who chipped in 38 runs. Best pitches, ground award for PCA
Mohali, May 29 M P Pandove, Honorary Secretary of the PCA, received the award. Sushil Kapoor, spokesperson of the PCA, said the association won the award for the first time along with Chennai. Kapoor said: “Our wicket and ground attracted a lot of praise from the visiting teams and their top-class International players during their matches played at this venue. The pitches here are being rated as one of the fastest and bouncy tracks of the country.” The PCA has so far hosted 11 international ODIs and 10 Test matches as well. This year the PCA has added to its tally of international matches by holding three World Cup matches including the high-profile semi final match against Pakistan in March. “The award is a big boost, particularly to our ground and pitches committee,” added Kapoor. |

Aakash hogs limelight in DP Azad win
Chandigarh, May 29 After winning the toss, Stepping Stones team elected to bat first and made a total of 117 runs in 26 overs. DP Azad team completed its mission in 23 overs at the loss of just two wickets. For Stepping Stones, Gaurav emerged as the highest scorer with 35 runs. Karaninder Singh broke the backbone of the team with his clinical bowling spell, as he finished with the figure of 4 for 13, while Azadbir claimed 2 for 15. For DP Azad team, Aakash completed the entire job with his unbeaten 60 runs knock in 52 balls. He was supported by Paras Kanasl, who remained not out on 34 runs.
