10 hurt in cross-firing, 2 serious
Rajpura, May 20 Policemen from the crime investigating agency, Fatehgarh Sahib, raided a house on a tip off by an informer. The informer told the police that the suspected snatchers were hiding in a house. During the raid, the people sitting inside the house fired gunshots at the police. While the police took up position, the informer and some of his friends attacked those sitting inside the house. City SHO Krishan Kumar Panthe said that it seemed that the informer and those sitting inside the house had a dispute over the house, and both the parties wanted to take possession of the house. The informer may have tried to take possession of the house after the police raid and arrests of those hiding inside the house were made, said the SHO. Nine persons, hiding in the house received injuries and two of them are said to be serious. Some of them were undergoing treatment at Rajpura Civil Hospital while others were shifted to PGIMER, Chandigarh, Sector-32 government hospital, Chandigarh, or hospitals in Patiala and Banur. The police has arrested Amarinder Singh and Ranjeet Kala. The police officials said that they had recovered .315 bore pistol with five live cartridges and two empty cartridges, .32 bore pistol and three live cartridges and a country made .35 bore pistol loaded with one cartridge. 3 pistols recovered, say police n While the police claims to have recovered three pistols, a picture taken by the media on Thursday night immediately after the incident had policemen showing four pistols. Hardcore criminal arrested
Chandigarh, May 20 The police got a tip-off Sukhwinder Singh, alias Soni, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, who was involved in a number of criminal cases, would come to see his mother at his house. Following the information, sub-inspector Jaspal Singh Bhullar laid a trap near the kerosene pump at Bapu Dham Colony. The police overpowered Sukhwinder when he tried to flee on seeing the police party at about 1.40 pm. During search, the police recovered a country-made pistol with a live cartridge from his possession. Investigations revealed that Sukhwinder was the prime accused in a dacoity case which he committed at Bapu Dham Colony along with his seven accomplices. He had attacked three residents of Bapu Dham Colony with a sword and his accomplices robbed their purses and other valuables. The case was reported in October 2010. While his accomplices were arrested, he was at large. The police also confirmed his involvement in another dacoity case reported in January this year. Two year ago, Sukhwinder and his friend Raju Khan allegedly murdered a person in Ludhiana. The said accused was produced in a court which remanded him to two-day police custody. |

Cyclist hit by bike, dies at GMCH-32
Zirakpur, May 20 The investigating officer stated that the incident took place around 8.45 am when Mahinder was moving towards Patiala side on his cycle where a speeding motorcycle driven by unidentified person hit him from the rear. A passer-by immediately informed the patrolling police who took him to GMCH-32, Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning, the investigating officer stated. The driver of the vehicle managed to flee from the spot. The body of deceased has been handed over to the family after conducting postmortem and a case under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC has been registered, the officer added. Arrested
The police was taken by a big surprise when they recovered 40 gm opium from the possession of Gurpeet Singh, a resident of Pabhat village when he was arrested in another case. The investigating officer said the accused was produced in the Dera Bassi court today where he was sent on judicial custody for 14 days. The officer stated that the accused was arrested under Section 107/151 CrPC. During the search in the police station, 40 gram opium was found from his pocket. Third win in a row for St John’s
Chandigarh, May 20 In the final match today, St John’s thrashed host St Soldier School, Sector 28, by 3-0. St Soldier’s goalkeeper Gaurav Ahlawat virtually presented two goals to their traditional rivals on a platter. Amaan netted two goals, while Manraj scored one goal to make their team win. Earlier, Amaan opened the account for St John’s School in the third minute when he caught St Soldier custodian Gaurav napping with a perfect lob from the left flank. The second goal came in the 20th minute through Amaan, whose 13-yard rising drive could have been easily collected by Gaurav, but he erred in his effort to let the ball cross over the goal line. Maintaining pressure, St John’s completed their tally in the 47th minute. In between, St Soldier had their best opportunity to score in the 27th minute. However, Sunil Dhankar’s powerful shot from close range was saved by John’s goalkeeper Amogh. St Soldier International School director Jagwinder Pal Singh distributed prizes. |
Gurinder, Abhilasha emerge victorious
Chandigarh, May 20 Gurinder Singh also lifted doubles title along with his teammate Ajay Yadav of Chandigarh. The duo defeated Tushar Sharma (Punjab) and Ranjeet Singh (Chandigarh) 4-6, 6-2 and 11-9 in the doubles final. Earlier, in mens’ singles, Gurinder Singh got the better of his rival Ajay Yadav in straight sets 6-2 and 6-4 while in womens’ singles, Abhilasha Ahuja outplayed Manya Nagpal of Delhi in straight sets 6-0 and 6-3. Ikttesh of Chandigarh and Harsimran beat Anukriti and Renu 6-4 and 7-5 to lift the womens’ doubles crown.
