Coronation Hospital
Dehradun, May 1 The cardiac unit, which will be run by Fortis Health Care, has been allocated the second floor of the hospital where the GVK Emergency Research Institute (EMRI) 108 Ambulance Services and office of the CMS exist. “We are still busy in the relocation process, and it will take some time before my office is shifted to a new place. We have already been asked to vacate the floor by April 30, and I think within two days we will be able to do so,” said Chief Medical Superintendent Dr AS Rawat. However, the108 Ambulance Service is still looking for space which is difficult to come by in Dehradun. Since the launch of the emergency services in 2008 in Uttarakhand, the ambulance services have been operating from the Coronation Hospital; but with the coming of the cardiac unit, it will have to be relocated at a different place. “Though things are yet to be finalised, we have asked the government to allocate space at Chander Nagar, where the office of the Director-General(Health), Uttarakhand, exists ,” said Anoop Nautiyal, Chief Operating Officer of 108 Ambulance Service. But the space vacated is to be utilised for the expansion of the Doon Hospital, that is to be upgraded to a medical college. It is still uncertain how the demand of 108 Ambulance Service will be met as the space has been earmarked for the medical college. Besides, there is also a rumour that the GVK company is in favour of cutting down employee costs of EMRI and may opt for only one regional CEO for five states. However the Uttarakhand office of the company denied any such move. |

Paper leak causes chaos among candidates
Dehradun, May 1 However, the effect of the leak out was also witnessed here in Dehradun where in the wake of these developments, the examination was cancelled and the candidates had to face a lot of inconvenience. The fresh examinations began in the afternoon from 12 pm but lack of prior notice to the candidates led to the last-minute confusion. “The entrance examination that had started at 10 am was discontinued around 11 am as it was announced that the question paper was leaked. The invigilator took our papers back and did not inform us about the schedule of re-examination,” said Bhaskar, a student. Moreover, the disarray among the students got compounded when re-examination started and some of them failed to appear in it. |
‘Gang-Rape’ of minor
Dehradun, May 1 According to the police, the 17-year-old victim was yesterday morning called by her friend, Shiffat Qazi, a BBA II student of a private university in Dehradun, to the bus stand on the pretext of letting her meet a tutor for joining tuition classes. Both met at the bus stand and left on the bike of Qazi. He brought the girl to a room at turner road. The girl first thought it to be a place of the tutor as told by her friend but when she saw two more boys, Javad, a BBA II student, and Raja, alias Raees Alam, a restaurant owner, she got suspicious. The boys initially spoke to her about studies to confuse her and later raped her one by one. Unconfirmed reports said the trio also made her MMS and threatened to make it public if she reported even a word of what had happened to her. They warned her of dire consequences if she reported the matter to anyone. The victim was dropped near her house by one of the accused. The victim, after reaching her home, narrated the story to her family. The family then lodged a complaint at Premnagar police post. The Hindu Jagaran Manch also reached the police post and demanded stern action against the three youths. The cops in a swift action arrested Qazi and Alam last night while Javad is still at large. Prithi Singh Bisht, Station House Officer of the Clement Town police station, said “The arrested youths, too, have been sent on 14-day remand, while we are trying to trace the third one.” |
Asan Wetland Conservation Reserve
Dehradun, May 1 Spread across 444 hectares, Asan Wetland Conservation Reserve falls on Uttarakhand’s border with Himachal and has a lot of importance for birdwatchers from across the country. Asan's significance as an important bird area is reinforced by the fact that this wetland is located in the north-western part of the country and serves as a key halt for Trans-Himalayan migratory birds and receives waterfowl migrants that are rare elsewhere. Water fowl census is conducted at Asan every winter to gather details of number of arriving birds and their species. Geese and duck continue to maintain their strength in Asan even this year followed by Gallinules and Coot. Cormorants, Herons, Egrets and Grebes, too, have recorded their substantial presence in the wetland, one of the few conservation reserves of the country. The most striking highlight of the census had been the presence of Ruddy Shelduck that continues to make Asan their winter sojourn. The Rudy Shelducks were recorded 1,183 in numbers. Interestingly, the last census in 2010 had recorded the presence of Ruddy Shelduck to 1,200. Among other major migratory species, a total of 579 Eurasian Wigeons were recorded this winter at Asan. Gadwall 310, Common Teal 274, Northern Pintall 214, Red Crested Pochard 438, Common Pochard 482, Tufted Pochard 166 and Common Cott 265 were other major contributors to the count. Encouragingly, a lone bird of Common Greenshank, Western Marsh Harrier, White Wagtail, Black-necked Grebe, Median and Ferruginous Poachard were also sighted and recorded in Asan wetland, which is also identified as an important bird area of the country. According to RN Jha, conservator, Shivalik Circle, a copy of the census report has been sent to the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, and Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai. He said the forest authorities were making all-out efforts to enrich Asan’s biodiversity and extend a disturbance-free environs to the birds. Led by the Wildlife Institute of India’s Senior Scientist Dhananjai Mohan, the team that conducted the census included Mousumi Ghosh, Abhishek Harihar, Raman Kumar, Soumya Prasad, Suniti B Dutta, Satpal Gandhi and Bhumesh Bharti. |
Nainital
diary Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank is leaving no stone unturned to appease the media. He is going more than a step ahead to appease particularly those media houses that are “friendly” to him and his government. Despite the fact that a recent revelation coming through a Right To Information (RTI) application on the advertisements doled out to various media houses has enough to embarrass his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), there is no stopping Nishank. According to sources, a few months ago, the government and its Information Department had handed over a contract to a subsidiary of a leading vernacular media house for putting up his hoardings across the state. This was followed by Nishank deciding to tie up with the second leading vernacular media house by deciding to circulate a book published by the media house related to the achievements of the state over the first decade of its existence. The government had got bundles of the said book, otherwise priced at Rs 200 per copy, to be distributed through the District Information Offices. Now, the same offices are being given yet another book for circulation. This time, it is a publication from a “friendly” English media house that has sung praises of Nishank. Observers feel that the practice started by the Nishank Government of getting publications brought out by media houses distributed through government channels is highly unethical. There is also a call to probe how much money the government and the Information Department is dishing out to the publishers of this material. What is otherwise a well known fact and a butt of great many jokes is the disbursement of publicity material singing praises of Nishank and his government becoming a headache for the officials across the state as tonnes of such material is lying different offices with no takers. While the government continues to draw flak on fronts, the officials at the Directorate of Information continue to do their bit trying to build a positive image for the government. Distribution of such material has become so difficult that the officials are often seen looking forward to some public programme so that they can get the load off their heads. UPP launches website
Although the youngest among the political parties in the state, the Uttarakhand Parivartan Party (UPP) is turning out to be among the most innovative and politically imaginative forces. The UPP is perhaps the first political party to have developed a proper website to reach out to the cyber-literate population. The website happens to be very neat and properly updated. It clearly spells out what the party stands for, who are its leaders, what are its programmes and where it is heading. It also has the latest features that are essential for any good website like audio and video uplinking. It has connectivity with social networking websites and other relevant websites. The party is hardly two years old and yet it has emerged a cyber leader among all the political forces in Uttarakhand.
Harish Rawat
scores with wit
Why Harish Rawat is considered to be among the sharpest of politicians in the state was visible to all during his recent visit to Nainital. The Congress stalwart was ready with instant replies to every tongue-in-cheek suggestions made by the reporters to him during a media interaction. When it was pointed to him that one plus point of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) controversy has been the return of the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) coming close to the Congress fold, he added to the observation by stating, “Even the Left would come close to us once their illusion in West Bengal and Kerala is over.” When asked about the distribution of party ticket to the aspirants for contesting the forthcoming Assembly polls, he said state unit president Yash Pal Arya was the high command for the matter. When probed further on whether Arya would be the sole authority for the distribution of ticket, Rawat quietly stated that then there was the second high command thereby hinting at the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, and other top shots in the the All-India Congress Committee.
One of the finest creations by playwright Swadesh Deepak, “Court Martial”, was brought alive on stage by the artistes of Yugmanch, a prominent theatre group of Nainital, recently. The play was directed by Zahoor Alam and Jitendra Bisht. The play makes a powerful social statement on the existing social scenario of which even institutions like the Army are not bereft. It hits out at the inhuman treatment meted out to the lower-rung Jawans in the name of casteism. The protagonist in the play revolts on being abused on casteist forum and what follows is his “Court Martial”. The two performances at the local CRST Inter-College were well received by the audience.
People question awards
The loss of credibility of institutions now has people smirking on whatever is being done in public domain. People are also questioning the showering of awards on various personalities who do not enjoy repute in public domain. The joke that is going around in Kumaon is that if one has people protesting against him or her on issues like corruption and fraud, he or she is the perfect choice for getting at least three awards within a semester. Another interesting observation made by this correspondent is that cynicism has hit such a high that at times people while referring to institutions that have the word Kumaon as a part of their name often refer to it by replacing the word Kumaon with ‘Kamau’.
Tiwari makes headlines
Narayan Dutt Tiwari continues to dominate headlines in a positive manner despite the fact that he has been at the core of several controversies. The name of the former Uttarakhand Chief Minister continues to crop up at various functions, events and media conferences. Of late, Tiwari has been targeted by his rivals within the Congress for making appearances at programmes organised by the present Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government like the launch of the Atal Khadyann Yojana and more recently the foundation stone laying of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at Kashipur. His pictures had once again been splashed on the first page of the local newspapers as if he was the key person in the entire set of happenings. A large section of the population is of the opinion that this IIM is also the result of Tewari’s efforts. The message is clear that despite being down in the political arena on account of the controversies surrounding him, Tiwari is surely not out. When the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) Anees Ahmed was asked by the media persons whether the Congress would seek the help of Tiwari during its poll campaign for the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state, he appeared to have been caught off guard. But, he recovered instantly and came up with a diplomatic reply that if Tiwari comes forward to help, the party would not refuse it. He said anybody was welcome to support the party.a |
Patrician College celebrates annual day
Dehradun, May 1 Almost all of the items were interesting but the Hindi skit, “Kanua Nai”, and English skit “Mind your Language”, were really enjoyable. The kathak dance and Punjabi giddha were also performed with professional skills. Senior High Court lawyer Kanwal Jeet Singh, an alumnus of St Joseph’s Academy (SJA), was the chief guest. Recalling his school days, Singh proudly claimed that he owed to the SJA all his professional success and whatever else he had achieved in life. “The school was instrumental in inculcating strict moral values in all of us,” he said. Singh complimented the students for choosing to become teachers and added that teaching today had become a much sought after profession on a par with medicine, law, accountancy and engineering. “On my part, I would put it at a higher pedestal than the other professions,” Singh added. Addressing, in particular, the students of Patrician College, Singh asked them to carry forward a feeling of goodness and to eschew hatred in any form. He strongly endorsed the words of Brother Sebastian who had earlier said, “Today’s teachers need not only have the traditional qualities of a teacher but also the skills of modern technology, a commitment to create a just society, effective teaching-learning strategies and process and the ability to face up to many new changes and challenges”. Earlier, director of Patrician College Brother Sebastian highlighted the importance of education but lamented the fact that in this money-driven world, values and priorities got blurred and the teaching profession was one of the worst victims of such a mindset. However, there was a silver lining that there are still many people who had not lost faith in the noble profession of teaching, he added. “Our current batch is a testimony to this fact. It is a group of highly talented and motivated young men and women who believe that teaching is still a noble profession,” Brother Sebastian added. |
