Regal tie
Royal spectacle is on…are you part of it?
Mona

The most eligible royal bachelor hitches on Friday, turning a commoner into a royal. Prince William and Catherine (Kate) Middleton’s wedding is all over the media - the bridal gown (even the Prince hasn’t seen it yet), wedding souvenirs, the bride’s humble beginning, the vows (is Kate going to pledge to ‘obey’ her husband), royal feast, wild after-party thrown by Prince Harry for the elder bro and also the biological or nuclear terror threat to London! Is public as enthusiastic as us, we find out!

Manu, 25, an MBA, working in a start-up company is waiting to see the royals tie the knot. Interestingly, she got engaged last week only. “Weddings have such a fairytale feel. I am all set to witness one of the most-awaited wedding of the world,” says Manu.

Sandeep Kaul is equally keen on the wedding though her reasons are different. “It’s the wedding gown! I am dying to see who is dressed how. This one is going to dictate much of the fashion, as Kate is already an established icon,” says this fashion design student. Nishu Mahajan, a homemaker and a soap-lover, is all set to spend the Friday afternoon watching the royal wedding. “Weddings, be it on reel or real, have always been close to us Indians. Even serials spend so many episodes on that. When it comes to the future King and Queen of England, I will be much part of it in my own ways,” she says.

Once upon a time…

True princess that Diana was, would Kate be able to match the fanfare enjoyed by her late mother-in-law? “Why not,” questions Eshan. “Royalty is like that philosopher’s stone that turns each one that enters in the household into a celeb. Kate, pretty stylish that she is, should sure be able to win people’s love,” he says. However, Manu disagrees. “There was only one princess - Di. How many others are alive in our memories,” she asks. “Diana was 22 when she became the Princess of Wales. Catherine is 29, with a mature head on her shoulders. Yes, she would command respect but I don’t think much more,” says Nishu.

Navin Sharma, a communication instructor, is surfing the Internet to keep herself up to date, “Weddings have turned into grand occasions. India tops the list with the fancy ‘crores’ wedding. Lately, there was one reported in Haryana. William and Kate’s, I feel, is the mother of them all. I am all for it. ”

However, not all are riding the wave. Eshan Sharma, final-year student is busy preparing for exams. Sahil, a BPO employee, has no time to waste either. “My hands are full with cricket. I will check out whatever grand happened in papers the next day,” he says.

If you want to catch the action live, switch on to TLC, which gives a four-hour long coverage on Friday from 2:30pm onwards or log on to the royal channel on youtube.

EKTA…lent
Czarina of television soaps, Ekta Kapoor refuses to follow the given and believes in doing her own thing
Mona

I am selling what all they say I am. People had labelled me ‘regressive’ earlier, they can say whatever, I believe in doing my own thing — Ekta Kapoor

She wears her attitude on the sleeve. Dressed casually, with all those ‘so-talked about’ rings in place, Ekta Kapoor takes on shutterbugs, media queries, enthusiastic students, admiration and criticism…all in her stride!

In Chandigarh to address students of INIFD, Ekta walked around comfortably, totally at ease and all ears as the promo of her Ragini MMS is aired.

“The movie is aimed at youth and that’s why I have come among you to promote it,” says Ekta. The Czarina of television soaps is on a roll and has projects aimed at youth at hands. With 16 years of television, which Ekta ‘totally loved’, cinema venture is a professional and personal decision for her. “Professionally, I felt that the young, urban viewer is looking for entertainment but not the typical type, and personally I wanted to diversify, realign the creative side of me,” says Ekta. And so was born Alt Entertainment.

“Bala Ji is for family entertainment, Alt is where we make films that might work or not,” she adds. Alt is also a platform to give young talent a chance. “The industry has given me a lot. I was 16-and-a-half when I entered it; it’s payback time,” she says.

The future of soaps? “It’s going to be a bipolar world. On one hand, there will be an increase in serials rich in rural content while on the other there will be more for urban masses as well,” she says.

With questions flying in all direction, a query pours in, ‘people accuse you of selling sex’. “I am selling what all they say I am. People have labelled me ‘regressive’ earlier, they can say whatever, I believe in doing my own thing,” she says effortlessly.

Not ready to fall in a mould, marriage at 25, kids by 29, own home a little later, Ekta says, “I believe in doing what I like.”

Ekta takes controversies easy, be it related to Shor in the City or The Dirty Picture. “We got thumbs up for ‘Shor’ from critics. I am sure that audience will appreciate the effort that Tusshar and his team has put up,” says Ekta.

Back to ‘Ragini MMS’, do you believe in paranormal? “Totally,” says Ekta, “This movie is about youth and horror, rolled into one. Nothing like this has ever been tried in India before,” she adds.

Ragini MMS due for release on Friday, May 13, is based on a true incident. The movie starts on a romantic note - a young couple goes to a bungalow for a dirty weekend. The place is already bugged with some 20 plus camera, as the guy in question wants to make an MMS and sell it. However, the cameras catch not only the comfortable intimacy, but also the paranormal. “Twenty plus cameras get voyeuristic horror. The movie is going to transport you into the haunted house,” promises Ekta.

Shades of the season
Deepali Sagar

Being cool in summers means combining style with care for the entire body. For the most sensitive part of our body, our eyes, nothing spells style more than a dashing pair of sunglasses. A good pair of sunglasses is one accessory that adds that star quality to any ordinary face.

Finding the exact pair that goes with the face type can be quite a challenging task.

Aviator sunglasses

These sunglasses are a favourite with the stars and commoners alike.

"They are available in oversize teardrop-shaped lenses with a thin metal frame. This design is very popular among the youth and is considered a fashion statement," says Shekhar Sharma, of Kumar Opticals. Though black colour is the all time favourite still these sunglasses are often made in mirrored, coloured and wrap around styles to make them attractive.

Gradient glasses

These lenses go from a darker shade at the top to a lighter one at the bottom. These offer greater protection from the sun. "They are very clear. One can wear them indoors too, without any fear of tripping over something as they provide a very clear view of things," says a salesman of Ray-Ban store at DT Mall. You can often spot them at nightclubs.

Mirror sunglasses

These are the new attraction in the market. Pick from a wide range of colours depending upon one's choice. "They have a metallic, partially reflective coating on the outer surface combined with a tinted glass lens. This feature makes them an alternative for UV protection and also improves the contrast," says Shekhar. These sunglasses are available in blue, green, pink and florescent colours.

Oversize glasses

Singer Elton John is said to be the proponent of these glasses. He wore these glasses on the stage at his Captain Fantastic act in 1970. "These sunglasses offer more protection from the sunburn as they cover larger area of skin. Moreover, they come in bright colours with coloured lenses and can be purchased easily," says Shekhar.

If you think that sunglasses only offer protection against exposure to sunlight, think again. "Sunglasses provide protection against the ultraviolet radiations that can cause short and long-term ocular problems such as snow blindness, cataract and various forms of eye cancer," says Parul Sinha, a city based ENT specialist. Moreover, sunglasses filter visible and invisible components of sunlight that might harm our eyes. So, what are you waiting for? Go get a pair of sunglasses for yourself and protect your eyes.

The colour of the lens can vary depending on style, fashion, and purpose, but for general use, red, grey, yellow, or brown are recommended to avoid or minimise colour distortion, that can affect safety of the eyes.

n Grey and green lenses are considered neutral because they maintain true colours.
n Brown lenses cause some colour distortion, but also increase contrast.
n Turquoise lenses are good for medium and high light conditions, because they are good at enhancing contrast, but do not cause significant colour distortion.
n Orange and yellow lenses increase both contrast and depth perception. They also increase colour distortion.
n Coloured lenses are for cosmetic purpose.

Our addiction to the Internet is growing by the day and it has become an integral part of our daily routine. So much so that we need online access at almost every moment we are awake.

Internet mania has spread so much that it has taken over our workspaces, our homes, our mobile phones and now even our cars! Yes, several leading automobile manufacturers are geared up to offer wi-fi hotspots to their customers. Working on your business documents or digging into your social network profiles would soon be possible from inside your car, while on the move!

According to market research done by iSuppli, automobile Wi-Fi systems are expected to surge to 7.2 million units by 2017, from just 1,74,000 in 2010, across the globe. All major manufacturers have already started working on the same. Car manufacturers, including Ford, GM, BMW, Audi, Saab and Chrysler, have started offering some kind of Internet access to their customers.

Ford has been offering automobile wi-fi hotspot in some models in select countries since 2010. Ford’s wi-fi system, MyFord Touch, adds SYNC connectivity for mobile phones and music players. It offers no separate data plan but instead allows consumers’ devices, smart phones, tablet computers or wireless cards, to be the brains of the system. Considering the demand and cutting edge innovations, we can surely hope to see automobile wi-fi systems creating a huge buzz in India in the near future.

Wi-fi hotspots would also help vehicles in communicating with one another using advanced signals. This would alert the drivers if their vehicles were on path to colliding with another vehicle at an upcoming intersection, or when a vehicle ahead stops or slows suddenly or when a traffic pattern changes on a busy highway.

The systems would also warn drivers if there is a risk of collision while changing lanes, approaching a stationary or parked vehicle or if another driver loses control. Hope we get to experience the technology in India soon.

As Ready as can be

Asin, Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan
FUN TIME: (L-R) Asin, Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan

Salman Khan was at his candid and entertaining best at the music launch of Ready. His witty answers had the audience in splits. He also showed his magnanimous side by felicitating the workers and managers at Film City. The superstar is excited about his next release Ready and is pulling out all the stops to reach out to the masses. He talks about the song, Character dheela and the kind of films he makes.

The song Character dheela is becoming a rage. How did the song come about?

Character Dheela was Asin's idea. So, how can I refuse the heroine of the film? (Laughs) Character dheela is usually used in a negative manner and Anees bhai wanted to use it in a positive way. Anees said people look at others and say that their character is dheela when they are the ones who actually need to work on their character. It is not fair that woh kare toh raas leela aur mein karu toh character dheela!

My character is not dheela but mera average bahut bura hai. I am 46 now!

Most of your movies are remakes of the South, whether it is Wanted, Ready or Bodyguard. So are you going to continue with remakes?

Good movies, whether they are from the South or from Mumbai, will work. We do not relate to Hollywood movies so there is no point in remaking them. Now, we have writers who are actually writing. Today, movies have one gag from a French film, one action scene from an Ethiopian film, and one character from an old film. This is usually the case unless the film is made by a writer-director. The South has also remade our movies such as 3 Idiots, Dabangg, Deewar, and Haathi Meri Saathi among others. Earlier, when my father used to write movies, the heroes were strong and central characters and heroism was present in movies. In the South, heroism still exists but I felt that it was over in the films made in Mumbai. So, I wanted a hero on screen and I wanted to bring him back whether the hero was doing action, comedy, or drama. I wanted people to remember the hero when they left the theatre, which is why I am doing such films. Now, what better hero than me? (Laughs)

Do you think Ready will be a bigger hit than Dabangg?

I don't know about whether or not Ready will do as well as Dabangg. We make every movie hoping that it will be better than Mughal-E-Azam but that does not happen. We do not think of making the biggest flop film of all time. We do not think that aisi bekaar picture benaye ki theatre mein ek kutta bhi na ho. (Laughs)

You have recreated sequences from the songs of Sholay, Mughal-e-Azam, and Shree 420 in Character dheela hai.

There is no way you can do justice to them. Nobody can look the way Dharmendra saab looked in Sholay, Raj Kapoor is a legend, and Yusuf saab is a legend. I just saw Ganga-Jamuna four years ago for the fourth time. I did not understand it the first time I saw it. Yusuf saab was brilliant and we will never be as good as him. This song is only a tribute, to show the respect I have for them.

You are the most eligible bachelor in the country. What do you have to say about that?

I will change my bachelor status soon!

You have included Munni and Sheila in Character dheela. So how have they reacted to the song?

There was Munni, there was Sheila, now we have done Character dheela! — HRM

Character dhila hai a copy: Anu Malik

A still from the movie Ready
A still from the movie Ready

Music composer Anu Malik alleges that Pritam Chakraborty has lifted the entire tune of his Mohabaat naam hai kiska from Ajnabee and used it in the song Character dhila hai.

The song features in director Anees Bazmee forthcoming movie Ready and is picturised on Salman Khan and Zarine Khan.

“The full tempo, the full tune has been taken and ripped off,” Anu said. “I had liked the song and had called and congratulated Aneesji for such a fantastic song. Then I found that I was clapping for my own song,” he added.

Anu may file a suit for plagiarising his song. “We have to take a legal opinion and then take a call. I will talk to my lawyer first as it is a rip-off of my song,” said Anu.

He wonders why Pritam didn’t bother to give credit to RD Burman for using his composition in the title song of Rohan Sippy’s Dum Maaro Dum.

“First of all they copied Panchamda’s tune and called it their own. Dum maaro dum is actually Panchamda’s composition. They don’t even give credit. It is terrible. You cannot copy other’s composition and call it your own and then get away and get applause,” he said. — IANS

Gents first
Men say ‘I love you’ before women do in anticipation of sex in relationship

While most people think that it is women who say “I love you” first in romantic relationships, a new research has found that men were more likely to utter those three magic words first. Also, men admit thinking about confessing love six weeks earlier than their female partners.

Taking an “evolutionary-economics” perspective, the research concludes that gender differences in the timing and function of saying “I love you” are related to whether a couple has had sex.

“Men may be more impulsive in the way they express love, but what love means to men and what love means to women may be very different,” said co-author Josh Ackerman, assistant professor of marketing at MIT Sloan School of Management.

In a series of surveys, researchers found that two-thirds of couples report that the man was first in confessing love.

Men also reported being significantly happier than women to hear “I love you” one month into the relationship if they had not yet had sex, while women felt happier than men when they heard “I love you” after the onset of sex in the relationship.

The researchers theorised that a pre-sex love confession may signal interest in advancing the relationship to include sexual activity, while women took “l love you” post-sex as a signal of commitment. — ANI

Nirvana at New York

Karma to Nirvana, the second installment in chef Vikas Khanna's Holy Kitchens documentary series will premiere at the New York Indian Film Festival, the longest-running, prestigious Indian film festival in the US, on May 7.

"At any given time somewhere on earth, people are gathering to share food in the name of God. This is spiritual sustenance, meant to bring us closer together and closer to the Creator," says Khanna, whose new Manhattan restaurant, Junoon, recently received two stars in its New York Times review.

"This is the story of Holy Kitchens," adds Khanna saying he was compelled to explore the symbiotic intersection of food and religion in his documentary series by Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy: "God comes to the hungry in the form of food".

Karma to Nirvana, focuses specifically on Hinduism, Lord Krishna's spiritual practices, and the principles of Karma and Nirvana as set forth in the Bhagavad-Gita.

The film features interviews with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Arun Gandhi, Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, Shaunaka Rishi Das, Aroon Shivdasani, Lynn McGuire, Scott Carney and Anju Bhargava.

It is written and narrated by Andrew Blackmore-Dobbyn, directed by Anubhav Bhardwaj, and co-directed by Francisco Aguila.

Vikas Khanna's journey in the documentary takes one right into the soup kitchens of Amma, Mata Amritanandamayi Devi's ashram in Kerala, where Amma blesses thousands of people daily with motherly hugs and serves them meals with her own hands.

"True Business," the first film in the Holy Kitchens series focused on the Sikh religion and how its temples provide free food through its kitchens, known as langars, to everyone who comes, regardless of their beliefs.

With commentary by Dr Deepak Chopra, the film played to a sold-out audience at New York's Sikh International Film Festival in autumn 2010.

Next year's film is titled The Moon of Eïd and will explore Ramadan in the Islamic faith from the Middle East to Europe and across the world.

"Our aim is to make people aware of this commonality of the world's religious traditions and to illuminate the differences in a way that will engender mutual tolerance and respect," says Khanna.

"Taken together, these films are our offering to the dialogue that is meant to create more peace and harmony in the world." — IANS

Healthy option

Potato-based dishes are turning up on more dinner tables and restaurant menus as a healthy addition to almost any meal, according to a new research. Donald E. Pszczola, senior editor of Food Technology, examined the history of the spud as well as some of the innovative ways it can be prepared and new products on the market that showcase the healthy advantages of potatoes.

"Compared by some to a blank slate, potatoes can effectively work with a wide range of different flavours and ingredients," said Pszczola.

He found that potatoes are appearing on menus in a variety of dishes.

Lime Chicken Potato Tacos, Creamy Potato Leek Soup with Tangy Tarragon Drizzle, Mediterranean-inspired cuisine such as Salad with Potato Medley, Potato Crusted Goat Cheese, Potato Risotto, Potato Chips Strips, Gnocchi Tart with Purple Potato Puree and Caramelized Cauliflower and Potato Soup are some of the more innovative potato-based dishes.

Pszczola published his research in the "Ingredients" column of the April 2011 issue of Food Technology magazine. — ANI

The Year Ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is April 28...
You will feel tired of what you are doing. 2011-12 is perfect to build new openings, turn the page and go forward on new surprising paths.

Your emotions are written all over your face now, especially if your boss goes off on a rambling tangent during a meeting though everyone there is pressed for time. If you feel bored or frustrated, be honest and decide.

Your honesty brings great results. The planetary configuration on your birthday advises you to throw yourself into that arena, which really interests you. There are new opportunities to grab on the horizon. Students may not be very happy with their grades.

Do not let this chance at fortune slip through your fingers. You might be unaware of the importance of current events but your future is at stake.  You must carefully consider the next step and start working hard for competitive exams or campus placements. An effort may improve family life. A costly appliance or vehicle is likely to be purchased around birthday. A squabble within the family is likely and appears to have to do with the behaviour or actions of a member. Patience is needed. Fun gatherings cheer you.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu (April 28,1987, Chennai), model and Tamil actor whose  first major release was the critically acclaimed Gautham Menon film, Ye Maaya Chesave, which got released in February 2010, shares her birthday with you.
