The youngest member of the Fashion Design Council of India, ace designer Varun Behl, is not just creatively inclined but has shrewd business acumen
Ashima Sehajpal

The pleats, ruffles, folds and cuts have replaced the heavy embroidery, which was the signature style of Varun Bahl’s collections until a month back. The shift was a risky proposition, which initially also drew a lot of flak from his friends and clients. As for Varun, he knew changes were always difficult to adjust to.

“For 10 years, I have been doing embroidery and then giving it up for cuts, I knew it would make people react. However, the increased sale of my creations in the Indian and the international market confirms the acceptance of the new designs,” says Varun, who was in Chandigarh on Friday to showcase his ensemble at the Magique for Arte exhibition. And, he has a lot more to share about the fashion industry.

On Khan vs Khan

Salman Khan made half of the Bollywood stars walk the ramp for his fashion show, Being Human, two years back. The rest half of the clan modelled with his rival Shah Rukh Khan for Karan Johan and Varun Bahl’s show held at a few days gap. While the Bollywood followers consider it as a kind of ‘rampage’, to Varun, there seems no connection between the two shows. “Salman’s was a charity show and ours was a commercial venture. Had Karan not got SRK and Gauri Khan for our show, people would have questioned their absence. Maybe it would have made for a spicier gossip.”

On the campus training

According to Varun, there’s much more to the primary aim of fashion institutes. “Besides teaching the basics of designing, the fashion schools should also teach the managerial and administrative duties.” He adds that a designer is a one-man army, who has to keep a vigil on production, sales, collections of his designs. Mere good designs won’t fetch a designer as much they should if he lacks marketing ability.

On being the board member of FDCI

It requires a lot to qualify as the youngest board member of the Fashion Design Council of India, when there are so many around with more experience. “I was never scared of this responsibility. In fact, for me it was an opportunity to represent the young designers of India.” He adds that the right proportion of veterans and young designers in the board of FDCI is important. “The young minds come up with new ideas but those with experience are capable of deciding if the idea is practical enough.”

On the XYZ Fashion Weeks

He considers the WIFW as the ultimate fashion week of India. Second comes the Lakme Fashion Week and there is no third one. He has a point, “Where are the buyers? What is the criteria for short listing the designers? What are the quality standards? Even the biggest of these fashion weeks, the Delhi Fashion Week is a gimmick.” He adds that no established fashion designer will like to be part of the fashion shows. “I too was asked to showcase my collection at the grand finale without a penny being charged, which I declined.”

On the B-town walking the ramp

He wouldn’t mind a celebrity in the front row of his show, while he would reserve the ramp only for his creations and models. “Bollywood is so important in India that everything else takes a back seat. I know a Katrina Kaif would take away all the attention that I wanted for my designs.”

Pick n choose

For those who had admired the beauty of Rolls Royce in James Bond flicks, this was one chance to take a glimpse of the real machine. As a part of the Magique for Arte, the exhibition that promised a bit of art in everything put on display, the car was quite an attraction. Since, it wasn’t possible for ESTD, another stall at the exhibition to put the actual stuff on display, they had used toy models of aircrafts and cruise, they manufacture. The Jewels Emporium from Jaipur has once again brought to the city their exquisite jewellery piece made with the use of rock-sized rubies, emeralds and polki. Don’t go by the literal meaning of the stall, Kitsch, for not in every exhibition, you get to see and buy creations by the international big names of the likes of Alexander Mc Queen, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney. There are accessories also, incase you want to grab some.

Under the glare(s)
Shades of 70s are back with a bang

This summer eyewear brands are placing their bet on mid-sized sunglasses with specific designing on the rims giving them the 70’s look flaunted by the likes of yesteryear actor Zeenat Aman in “Dum Maro Dum.” Mid-sized rims seem to be drawing attention more than the others. Rims in red, white and yellow, some embossed with crystals, some with pointy edges, some with butterfly or cupid motif on the arms, are instant hits.

“The entire experimentation is focused on the girls’ range of glares. Those standard black glasses with both small and over size rims have already bid a goodbye. Women collection is more about colour and embellishments,” says Simran, marketing head of Fastrack, which has launched its latest collection of shades.

For women, material of the shades is not that important...shape and colours matter more,” says Raunak Seth, Director of Eternity Lifestyles which has been into the retailing of eyewear from past 30 years.

Rose pink is a hot favourite pick amongst the college going young women. Moreover the material has also undergone a transformation for both men and women,” adds Seth who has launched a retro look of shades for this season.

Curved and rounded shaped glares in acetate are the bestsellers. But for men, metal aviators still rule the roost,” opines Seth.

“For men, fashion is slowly shifting from aviators to wayfarers. Adding colours in a small space like black with yellow, black with red, black with white is in,” adds Seth.

Who else can show off better than our very own style icon, Bollywood Saif Ali Khan whose glares are often custom made. His pair of shades with a thin red rim are to die for.

Besides this, Wayfarers are back in style with MTV jockey Raghuram flaunting them in the current season of reality show ‘Roadies’.

“Wayfarers which were the trend setters for 1950s are back to be the style this summer season. Aviators, though are still the hot favourite among men,” adds Simran.

Salil Chaturvedi of Provogue eyewear says, “It’s exciting to see people experimenting with sunglasses. No one’s playing safe by going the regular cliched way. Sunglasses are a reflection of one’s attitude and so the shape, size and colour are completely out-of-the-box, yet very wearable.” —PTI

Just Dance on his mind

He is one of the best dancers in Bollywood but relentless hours of rehearsals go into Hrithik Roshan’s effortless moves onscreen.

The actor, who is reprising Amitabh Bachchan’s role in Karan Johar’s Agneepath remake, has been quietly rehearsing for a song in the movie after finishing the shoot. Hrithik, who is also making his debut on small screen with reality show Just Dance, says he cannot perform a move without imagining it first.

“Along with rehearsals, I actually learn dancing in my sleep. If I can clearly see every moment of the move in my head, then my body is able to express it... The downside is that if I can’t see it - I can’t do it,” Hrithik said. — PTI

FIRST DAY FIRST SHOW
A ‘good’ Friday
Mona

It was indeed a ‘good’ Friday for cinema as Chandigarh crowd made a beeline to watch Dum Maro Dum and Dharti.

Surviving umpteenth court cases, Dum Maro Dum was finally released. With an impressive star cast —Abhishek Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut, Aditya Pancholi, Bipasha Basu, Rana Duggubati and Prateik Babbar, it deals with issues like drug abuse and prostitution. Directed by Rohan Sippy, music by Pritam Chakraborty, the movie boasts of the controversial number Dum Maro Dum picturised on Deepika.

Audiences react:

Pretty good

A good entertainer with an intriguing plot. This movie brings to the surface the murky face of Goa. While all the actors have done a decent job, it’s Rana Duggubati who steals the show with not only his looks but also his acting skill.

Harkirtan Singh, class twelfth student

Best of AB Baby

So far the best performance by Abhishek Bachchan. This one should silence his critics for once and all. Long live Abhishek!

Sonia Ahuja, commerce student

Great finish

Movie is good in fits and starts. One is taken in by the interesting plot but loses it in between a few places. The climax, however, makes up for the loss. Thumbs up from me.

Sonia, dentist

Punjabis on a roll

It was surprising to see the crowd that turned out for the first show of Dharti. A family drama set in Punjab has politics for the backdrop. With Jimmy Shergill for the producer and main lead, this flick stars Ranvijay and Surveen Chawla. This is how audience rate it…

Terrific plot

The movie has a very interesting plot. And, it is the story of our land. I and my gang loved it.

Gurinder Jeet Singh, school student

An average fare

Dharti’s promos looked cool, so I came with my friends. A good one-time watch.

Gaurav Pahuja, student

Like it

I quite liked the movie and loved the song Gaddi modange. Jimmy Shergill and Surveen Chawla have acted well.

Ravneet Kaur, Arts student

Jimmy rocks

I have always liked Jimmy Shergill but one hardly sees him on screen. I loved the movie and the character Jasdeep Singh Wadala that Jimmy played.

Musée du Louvre is hallmark of Paris’ identity, as is Smithsonian of Washington DC. For any city, museum is the hub of activity. Our City Beautiful has its share of a state-of-the-art museum that houses dinosaur models, Gandhara sculptures, contemporary art as well as original drawings and sketches from making of the modern marvel that Chandigarh is. In fact, the footfall at this place is huge. We get you what we picked up at our recent visit.

Of dinosaurs & humans

The Gandhara sculptures at Government Museum and Art Gallery-10
The Gandhara sculptures at Government Museum and Art Gallery-10

A dinosaur model welcomes one at the Natural History Museum in Sector 10. Cyclorama for Evolution of Life has pictures of the earth from the beginning to date. A circular room with movable stools in the centre lets one enjoy the various transformations that the earth went through.

Evolution of Man has interesting fibreglass reconstructions of different stages. One can see their life and the tools they used, but the most popular is the dinosaur section. Dinosaur eggs, a nest, what they ate, their distribution in India, is all showcased through panels, models and reproductions.

The most intriguing are the Touch and Feel Exhibits. It’s exciting to touch a fossilised elephant skull or hand axes that the early man used.

Rare sculptures

Gandhara sculptures of the museum are the greatest attractions for scholars. Large-sized Buddha and Bodhisattva images, Buddhist deities with subtle expressions, panels visualising Buddhist narratives are the attraction of this collection. Inscribed and dated, the museum has a rich and rare collection.

Art mart

The museum has a diverse collection of miniature paintings from the Mughal period, Pahari School of Art, Rajasthani as well as Sikh artworks. The contemporary art section has some representative paintings of the Himalayas by Russian painter Nicholas Roerich. Others artworks are from the likes of MF Husain, Jatin Das, Amrita Sher-Gil, Gaganendranath Tagore and Jamini Roy in the forms of oil paintings, water colour paintings and drawings. Child Art Gallery is a colourful section, which is bound to appeal to kids, done in vibrant colours and themes like Lion’s Court. Rare coins from erstwhile regimes, traditional Phulkari art, murals from Ajanta, manuscript section, reference section, metal sculptures, there is loads on offer.

Making of the city

‘I have welcomed very greatly one experiment in India - Chandigarh. Many people argue about it, some like it, some dislike it….’ reads the inscription from Jawahar Lal Nehru’s speech in 1959. Starting from the beginning, this museum charts the journey that our city undertook in a very interesting way. The three floors are full of Le Corbusier’s quotes, original drawings, sketches and furniture from those days. Corbusier’s quotes spread throughout make one feel as if he still resides here and one would find him on the next turn!

Whenever you plan a visit, make sure you have loads of time, as the museum has plenty to offer. There is comfortable seating in between, a cafeteria to grab a bite and courteous staff to look after you. Some of the statues have inscriptions in Braille as well. A small souvenir shop sells replicas for as little as Rs 200 and books and prints.

“The interesting thing is that most of the objects displayed are original, unlike foreign museums that have replicas on show and originals shoved away in archives,” says museum director Jasvinder Kaur.

The entry fee is Rs 10; additional Rs 5 if you want to take your camera along. Entry for children below 12 years is free. The museum is open from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm each day except on Mondays, national and public holidays.

Voyage to nostalgia
Parbina Rashid

The art circuit had almost written her off as someone who chose academic art over pure art. And there was a reason for it. Kavita Singh, ever since her last exhibition four years back, barely made her presence felt in the city. So, when her familiar form, a little girl in blunt cut, who we now know as her childhood image, made an appearance on canvas again, we were pleasantly surprised.

And guess what is instrumental in bringing her back to the gallery after so long - the paper boat.

"It's not just about a paper boat. It's more about the nostalgia of my childhood days and the paper boat is one constant element in this series, which connects me to my carefree days," she corrects us. So there is one of her self image in form of a chair, holding the boat that denotes one's search for happiness and self-respect, another one sailing away to an unknown territory along with herself caged on a bottle reflecting the urge to spread her wings and yet another image of sailing on a paper boat and climbing the ladder to touch the moon.

She is present in all 27 frames, drawings and paintings, as a paper boat seller, as a celestial dancer holding a boat, as a fish doing an inward journey and as a circus girl, riding an unicycle and holding the boat.

The other symbols like the fish, lotus and tree, which one now can immediately connect to Kavita's painting too make an integral part of her compositions.

So, four years has not brought much change in her work? "It has, in terms of techniques. For instance I have started using spray along with my regular charcoal and acrylic media, but figuratively no. I want to capture the universality of a women's desire through self-portrait and to change that now would be like letting go of my essence as an artist," she justifies.

Kavita paints her series in black and white and understandably so. After all, nostalgia, for our generation, still dates back to the black and white era.

It's a bitter-tweet Experience

Twitter users' romantic relationships don't last as long as those of non-Twitterers and the problem gets worse as users get older, a new study has revealed. The result concluded by OkTrends - the research arm of free online dating website of OkCupid - comes from a survey of 833,987 of its 7million users.

The study found that an 18-year-old Twitter user has an average relationship-length of around nine months while non-Twitterers - defined as 'everybody else' - enjoy an average relationship of nine and a half months. But the problem intensifies as the users get older and by the time Twitterers hit 50, the disparity stretches to a two month gap. The average relationship length for Twitter users at that age is 15 months as opposed to 17 months for 'everybody else'. "Unfortunately, we have no way to tell who's dumping who here; whether the Twitterati are more annoying or just more flighty than everyone else," said the website. —ANI

Aksshat in Comedy Circus Ke Tansen

Paresh Ganatra is moving out of Comedy Circus Ke Tansen and Manish Paul will be stepping into his shoes. Recent developments confirm about a third person entering the show as Bharti's partner. The latest we hear is about Aksshat Saluja, last seen in Star Plus's Zara Nachke Dikha and a few episodes of Comedy Ka Dailysoap, will be paired with Bharti.

Business with pleasure

The 20-odd kids who play orphans in Zee TV's Chhoti Si Zindagi seem to be having a whale of a time on the sets of the show. Prasad Barve, the actor who plays the role of the friendly cook in the orphanage by the name of Calendar, often regales the kids with funny anecdotes and they all play with hula hoops, blow soap bubbles, sit on swings, see-saws, slides and generally have a great time!

Gurdeep's wish list

Gurdeep Kohli, who shot to fame after playing doctor Juhi in the show Sanjeevani, says new faces have thronged small screen because producers are not willing to pay to senior actors. She hopes the new brigade of artistes on small screen is compensated well and that the TV industry gets a makeover.

"I hope fresh lot are paid well, but it dosen't seem to me. The absence of my contemporaries makes me feel that just because the old faces (senior artists) ask for a bigger denomination, they (producers) go in for new faces as they could put them on roll at a less price," said Gurdeep.

"In our time, we were paid quite well and then the recession came, which troubled everybody. Now there is a new brigade of fresh faces on TV, but the sad part is that we don't get to see the old faces which ruled the television industry at some point of time," she added.Gurdeep also feels the television industry needs a make-over.

"I used to work for 12 hours in a day, when I was doing shows. But now with the responsibility that I have of my kid, I can't devote so much time. TV needs a makeover. It really needs to get easy.

The TRP drama and the never ending shooting schedules make it very hectic," she said. The 33-year-old is facing the camera after a long time and will be seen in Disney Channel's Best of Luck Nikki as Himani Singh."The show is just an extension of my real life. I play a mother in the show and in my real life too I am taking care of my one-year-old daughter. I found an instant connect with the role," she said. The actress, who also featured in soaps like Sindoor Tere Naam Ka and Kasamh Se, feels it's the right time for her to explore other avenues."I don't want to repeat any of my roles. I don't want to bore my viewers with the same old drama.

I was getting offers during my break also, but they were the same old 'saas-bahu' stuff, which I didn't want to get back with. It's been nearly nine years and I felt it is the right time for me to diversify my dimensions."I really wanted to do comedy." When asked about her other projects, she said: "I am looking forward for a second season of Best of Luck Nikki, for which I still have a five-month break." — IANS

Music to the ear

Hollywood beauty Catherine Zeta-Jones is joining the cast of director Adam Shankman’s musical Rock of Ages. The actress, who recently underwent treatment for bipolar disorder, will be seen playing a villainous ‘arch conservative’ opposite Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Mary J Blige.

The movie is based on a Broadway musical and Shankman said he is pleased to sign up Zeta-Jones who has previously won an Oscar for her role in a musical movie Chicago. “It’s like the musical gods just blessed us!” Jones character in the movie just came up at the last minute.”It’s a character that we only really came to in the last month. The character was invented to streamline the stories,” he said. — PTI

Who’s afraid of Shaitan?

There is no dearth of talented directors in Bollywood but they get wasted because producers are busy chasing established names, says filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who had struggled a lot to release his first film Black Friday.

“This industry only follows what you have done before. It goes by your previous box office record and that’s why the industry is in such a sad state. As far as I’m concerned, I just like to nurture people. I’ll back people I feel have potential,” Kashyap, 38, said.

As a producer, he has worked with many newcomers like Vikramaditya Motwane of Udaan fame and Bijoy Nambiar, who debuts with Shaitan.

“I was really fortunate that the industry didn’t pass Bijoy’s film and ultimately it came to me. But it’s unfortunate that the whole industry couldn’t see a brilliant idea in a great filmmaker and that’s why a lot of good filmmakers with good ideas get wasted here. I didn’t need to think twice to do this film (Shaitan),” said Kashyap.

Is he making films with debutant directors to help them?

“I have not helped them; in fact, they have helped me. Looking at things from my perspective, I feel they have given me a chance to earn credibility from their films and I’ve got the power to continue making such films (about 1993 Mumbai blasts).

“It’s sad for the industry as it cannot see a Vikramaditya Motwane before Udaan or a Bijoy before Shaitan,” said the director.

Udaan, which Kashyap produced, not only triumphed at all the awards functions in the country, it was also screened at the 2010 Cannes International Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section and became the first film to represent India in the prestigeous fest’s official section in the last seven years.

He describes his next production venture Shaitan as “A David Fincher kind of movie, set in Mumbai, made by an Indian”.

Shaitan is a film that deals with a group of five rich kids. The film that is slated for a June release stars Rajeev Khandelwal and Kashyap’s actress girlfriend Kalki Koechlin. In the initial stage, Arshad Warsi was supposed to play the lead role. —IANS

I have no issues with Salman: Govinda

Govinda has dismissed reports that all is not well between him and good friend Salman Khan after the superstar chose Sonakshi Sinha over his daughter Narmada for last year’s hit Dabangg.

Speculation is rife in Bollywood that Govinda is upset with Salman for not keeping his promise to launch Narmada with his home production, which became the highest grossing film of 2010.

“There are no issues between us. I am still in touch with Salman and we often discuss each other’s projects,” Govinda said. —PTI

Take a coffee break, Folks
Poonam Bindra

Ludhiana gets its first outlet of a US-based chain of coffee cafés-Folk Street. Located opposite Flamez Mall, the café exudes the feeling of some New York street. As you sip the delicious brew amidst potted plants and pebbles, you can gaze at the bright neon lights through the glass walls.

The mini shopping arcade with T-shirts and other apparels, perfumes, sunglasses, soft toys and guitars complements the mood.

"We like to chill out here by playing music and of course, digging into kathi rolls and sandwiches with coffee," quips Randeep and his pals. Dr Simar Brar from CMC, who was there with her NRI friend for a quick meal, says, "Here, we have a lot of privacy and I simply love their Folk-street frappe desire with its chocolate sauce and ice cream."

She also feels that the concept of a shopping area is a good one, especially as it offers items for a reasonable price. "It has become a popular joint for kitty parties and other occasions for those who want to deviate from 'butter chicken and paneer' route," she says.

Rahul Sharma of Folk Street says, "Keeping in view the long-hot-Indian summer, we offer an array of cool delights like Blue lagoon crush, Mint and strawberry crush and a whole lot of ice-cream sodas. Folk Street has medium strong coffees too, which suits all tastes.

Aman Sharma and Jasbir Singh, two young lawyers, say, "We come here for their black coffee. I can tell you that they know how to roast the coffee beans," The desserts are the usual brownies and Black Forest Cake slices. "The basic recipes of the food stuffs are according to the original ones from the head office," shares Rahul.

As we dig into a Chicken Clintro, a mint based creamy sandwich and a Slimmer's Choice sandwich, we are enticed by the delightful aroma of various brews.

A meal for two---Non-veg with special combos would cost Rs 300 while the veg combo for two would be Rs 250.

Cool dudes
Summer is here and everyone is planning to go for holidays. And summer means water sports. Here are a few of our celebs talking about their favourite water sport...

Karan Wahi
Ski kid: Karan Wahi
Stunt diva: Sambhavna Seth
Perfect shot: Chetan Hansraj
Splash of
spirituality: Manasi Parekh

Karan Wahi

I like water skiing. It's my favourite as I have done it many times. My favourite holiday destinations are Bangkok and Goa. I especially love doing water skiing there, though I have tried it elsewhere too. I love water skiing because I love the speed and watching the sky while doing it.

Sambhavna Seth

I love anything related to swimming. During the summer, I go to one of the clubs in Bandra or swim in the pool at my friend's place. Swimming is fun and relaxes me the most. I have tried other water sports like water rafting in Rishikesh. I will attempt water stunts in Khatron Ke Khiladi. That should be fun.

Avinash Sachdev

I am quite an adventurous guy. Swimming and water sports are very close to my heart. I have tried everything related to water sports. I have gone to Pattaya in Thailand where one can try all kinds of water sports. I tried sea walking, para-sailing, deep sea diving, all of which were superb experiences. During deep sea diving, I was asked not to move if I saw a shark, which was little scary. But now that I look back, that was super fun.

Kinshuk Mahajan

I love swimming and consider it the biggest and most important summer sport. It rejuvenates the mind and body and it's a good exercise too.

Chetan Hansraj

I find water sports very exciting. I have tried water sports when I was shooting for a show called Kajal a long time ago. My entry was on a jet ski and we shot for eight hours to get that one perfect shot. But oddly after all those retakes, I was not at all tired as I was enjoying being on the ski. That was my brush with water sports. But I was always a water baby since childhood. I know water polo and swimming well.

Manasi Parekh

I am on my way back from Rishikesh and I tried water rafting over there. It was super fun. I find it commendable that today we have so many water sports in India. I really enjoyed my trip to Rishikesh. I also love swimming, which is my favourite water sport.

Karan Kundra

I have some great memories about water sports. Two years ago, I went to a small island in Florida, USA. I took a cruise, which travels 50 miles into the sea and then the cruise ship opens from the sides. They have numerous boats, water scooters, water pebble, water cycles for the guests. I had great fun trying them all and being at high seas. Most memorable was to stand straight on a boat and paddle, climbing a big balloon. I even dived from the top of the balloon.

If your birthday is April 23...

State of mind will be very much focused on the personal change. Your compatible signs are Scorpio and Virgo. You must use lucky colours turquoise and aqua in routine. Your lucky days are Tuesdays and Thursdays.

These are few tips to make 2011 more fruitful. Loan to loved ones may spoil the relationship, so just decline the request with folded hands, otherwise you will be chasing them for the return of the money. Artists, writers, journalists, musicians, poets, architects and educationists will do well in their respective areas. Learning new skills, admission to art college, going abroad for some innovative courses and exhibition of art work will ensure high income towards the end of the year. Long journeys overseas or within India will be
beneficial.

A sea change is on the cards if you plan to go overseas. Employer's demand will increase at the work place and you may not be able to cope up with it. Try to change the job if possible in October-November when the Saturn occupies its best position. During this transition of Saturn, take care of health especially muscular pains or stomach disorders.
