Police fails to recover vehicles from canal
Tribune News Service

Fatehgarh Sahib, April 19
The district police has failed to pull out vehicles found in the Bhakra canal near Sirhind during the 15 days it has remained shut following repair work.

Sarabjit Singh Sohavi, member of police coordination committee, and vice-chairman of the market committee, Chanarthal Kalan, alleged that the police had failed to act swiftly despite being informed about the vehicles found in the canal.

“The matter was also taken up at a recent meeting but even then no action had been initiated in this regard. I saw a Gypsy and a car lying in the dried-up canal a few days ago and informed the police about the vehicles. An area resident also informed them about a third vehicle in the canal,” Sohavi said.

He added that only one car was pulled out of the canal this evening. This, despite the fact that water would be released in the canal tonight. He said some cases could have been solved and lost property restored had the police acted swiftly.

Area residents said though junk dealers, thieves and poor villagers had been removing iron and other parts from vehicles, the police officials were not keen on removing the vehicles from the canal.

Parole Case
Dist Magistrate, IG told to file reply on April 27
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 19
Just more than a fortnight after the Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled that the UT District Magistrate and the Inspector-General of Prison prima facie had shown scant regard for court orders in a parole matter, the two officials appeared before the Bench.

After recording their presence, the Bench of Justice Satish Kumar Mittal and Justice M Jeyapaul fixed April 27 as the deadline for them to file their reply to the “statutory contempt notice”.

The two, on the face of it, were held blameworthy for wilfully disobeying the orders in at least three cases.

Issuing “statutory contempt notice”, the Bench had asked them to show-cause “why contempt proceedings be not initiated against them for wilfully disobeying the orders passed by this court”.

The directions came on three petitions filed by Parveen Kumar of Sector 33 and two others.

As the case came up for hearing, counsel for the petitioners informed the Bench that the prayer for their release on parole was initially rejected on the ground that the owner of the house, where the petitioners wanted to avail the parole facility, declined to vouch for them.

After they challenged the orders, the High Court allowed the petition with a direction to the respondents to reconsider the case for temporary release within two weeks. The counsel asserted the respondents again rejected the prayer on the ground the house of the convicts was found to be locked and as per inquiry the address of the father of the petitioners was not known.

The counsel added: “In the subsequent orders, the authorities have not considered the directions given by the High Court.”

The Bench had asserted: “On perusal of the earlier orders as well as the impugned order, we prima facie come to the conclusion that the ruled UT District Magistrate as well as the Inspector-General of Prison, have exhibited scant regard to the orders passed by the Bench of this court and have not cared to comply with the direction issued earlier by this court.”

“Both the authorities appear to have wilfully disobeyed the order passed by this court not only in this case, but in two other cases also where similar orders were passed by this court. The conduct amounts to contempt.”

Azlan Shah Tournament

Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 19
For the players and coaches of the state-run Chandigarh Hockey Academy in Sector 42, there are enough reasons to cheer. The academy's product Rupinder Pal Singh has been named in the 18-member squad for the prestigious Azlan Shah Tournament, starting from May 5 in Ipoh, Malaysia.

Full back Rupinder Pal Singh, who had honed his skills in the academy for seven years, has impressed everyone with his abilities in deep defence and drag flicking.

"We are happy with the success of Rupinder. He has represented India several times at junior level. But this is surely a big chance for him to draw all attentions with his abilities," said Jasbir Bajwa and Alpinder Singh, both coaches at the academy.

Rupinder was selected for the Commonwealth camp last year with two other players from the academy -- forward Dharamvir Singh and centre half Preet Inder Singh. However, Rupinder could not make it to the Indian squad that time while Dharamvir was selected in the Commonwealth team. Later he (Dharamvir) also represented the country in Asian Games at Guangzhou in China. But this time he was not called for the camp as he was preparing for his college exams.

Rupinder's coaches felt that as the national squad consists of mainly inexperienced and young players, Rupinder would have a good chance to showcase his talent if given chance to play.

Rajpal still not fit

Former Indian captain Rajpal Singh is sad as he will not be there with the Indian team in the Azlan Shah tournament.

Talking over phone from New Delhi where the Indian camp is on, Rajpal said that he was yet to recover from his lower abdominal injury, which he had developed early this year.

Rajpal, who has participated in the Azlan Shah for five times so far and led the Indian team to the silver medal in the Commonwealth Games-2010 and bronze medal in the Asian Games-2010, wished the team good luck. "Though many of the team players are very young and inexperience, I think the team is capable of putting up good show. I am almost recovered from my injury and would make myself available for the country very soon," said Rajpal.
