3 Thay Bhai draws mixed response
Cinemas opened to 3 Thay Bhai, a Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's comedy with hugely talented cast, Om Puri, Shreyas Talpade and Deepak Dobriyal, this Friday. A fabulous plot — three brothers who can't stand each other, brought together by their grandfather's will in a picturesque location. Shot mostly in Gulmarg (Kashmir), the flick received flak from critics for its screenplay. The first time director Mrighdeep Singh Lamba is not able to pull the plot through. Do the three brothers with fancy names Chixie (Om Puri), a businessman, Happy (Deepak Dobriyal), a bogus dentist and Fancy (Shreyas Talpade), an actor make a lasting impression? We find out… One time watch Movie trailers looked promising and with actors like Om Puri and Shreyas, I had high hopes, but I found it to be an average one. However, my 10-year-old son loved it. Shruti Sharma, homemaker Amazing fun It is a laugh riot. One cannot help but fall in love with Bhatinda ke mashoor sadial that Om Puri plays. Even when the plot takes a dip, gifted actors make up for that. Harman Singh, engineering student An average fare The flick has all the ingredients — wonderful actors, interesting storyline and a good banner to support. Somehow, the movie doesn't click. There are some high points that tickle one but then at places you can't help yawning out of boredom. Jyoti Sharma, teacher 'Mast', must watch A full on 'mast' movie. Om Puri plays another remarkable character. The flick has some serious moments too. It is an enjoyable comedy. It stands apart from the regular fare that cinema usually doles out. Bollywood actress-model Kashmera Shah has come out in support of Payal Rohatgi after she accused filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee of casting couch, saying that not many women are backing the issue. “Casting couch exists as far as smaller films are concerned, B and C grade types. I feel sad for Payal because she is a talented girl who could do much better. Unfortunately with her exposing this thing, she hasn't got the backing that she should have got from women,” Kashmera said. Rohatgi has levelled allegations on the director of Love Sex Aur Dhokha of taking advantage of her under the pretext of casting her in his next film. “I didn't meet or have a word with Payal. But Payal doesn't seem the kind of a person who would lie about something like this. But unfortunately our industry has seen this trend, where Mamta Kulkarni came up with something like this and she got ousted. Nobody wanted to work with her again,” Kashmera said. “Unfortunately I don't know the people she has dragged in. So I don't know if they are those kind of people. I don't know why Payal would do this... she should have just said a no and moved on and not met the person again,” she said. The allegations have led to a war of words with other filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap and Sudhir Mishra coming in defence of Dibakar. “They say people do it for publicity... I doubt if any woman would . I feel sad,” Kashmera said. — PTI |

Harnesses, saddles for cattle and agricultural tools as which had been part of a typical Punjabi household till a few decades ago are all here. The entertainment section has traditional musical instruments like the dholak, tumba, sarangi and sitar. Archaeological findings of the Harappan civilisation like pottery and coins are also on display. Ornaments like jhumkas, star-studded juttis and phulkari-embroidered fans also find a place here. The open kitchen is somewhat similar to the modern-day kitchen but the old chullah (stove) and the bronze utensils take one back to the granny's kitchen. A spinning wheel completes the scene. The Replica House or Rural Museum as it is commonly known is a popular tourist attraction. It treasures those good old days. Open From 9 am to 5pm on all weekdays Entry fee is Rs 10 per person. |

Summer releases
Ready
This looks like a typical Salman Khan entertainer. It is directed by Anees Mazmee so expect it to be mindless. With Asin in the female lead, it is a remake of a South Indian film. The film will be Salman's first release post Dabangg so expectations are very high as it is banking solely on his star appeal. Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara Directed by Zoya Akhtar this is the first Indian film to be shot entirely in Spain. With an impressive ensemble cast comprising Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol. Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif, Kalki and a Spanish actress, the film traces the road trip these people take. There are rumours that it is a remake of The Hangover but Zoya is too classy and intelligent to be a copycat. We are eagerly awaiting this one. Double Dhamaal This is the sequel to Inder Kumar's Dhamaal. The male cast is the same with Sanjay Dutt, Riteish Deshmukh, Jaaved Jaaferi, Ashish Chowdhury and Arshad Warsi but Mallika Sherawat and Kangna Ranaut will up the glam quotient in the film. The comedy will release in June. Zokkomon This is a children's film produced by Disney with Darsheel Safary in the lead. It is Darsheel's first major role since Taare Zameen Par. Manjari Phadnis plays his mentor and there are special effects aplenty. Kids will drag their parents along to see this one. Ragini MMS Ekta Kapoor is back with yet another small budget bold film about the shady world of pornographic clips. The film stars Rajkumar Yadav and Kainaz Motiwala. The draw lies in the content and documentary style of presentation. The film has a Love, Sex Aur Dhokha hangover and is reminiscent of Paranormal Activity. Luv Ka the End This is an out-and-out breezy chick flick. Starring the spunky Shraddha Kapoor and a bunch of newcomers, the film is about a girl who takes revenge on her cheating boyfriend and is replete with peppy music. Chalo Dilli This film stars Lara Dutta and Vinay Pathak and is directed by Shashank Shah. It is an out-and-out class-clash romantic comedy with Lara playing a sophisticated businesswoman from Mumbai and Vinay playing the typical manner-less North Indian. Their journeys get intertwined. The film is reminiscent of Jab We Met and LeapYear and it has a fun vibe to it. |

She got her hands on her local London number (DP has been in London for a few weeks and will be there for another couple of months) and called her to clear the air with her and said she had no problems with her. How sweet is that! —HRM Social networker Nargis Fakhri has been kept away from the media by the makers of Rock Star but she is a Twitter regular. She often tweets about Ranbir Kapoor, her best friend VJ Bani, and rants against the media quite often. She follows Anushka Sharma. Addicted to love? Kareena Kapoor is addicted to her Blackberry phone. At any given point of time, she is either messaging or calling someone. During a late night shoot of her film with Reema Kagti, she was busy texting away and calling people at 4 am. Was it Saifu she was talking to? Abhay's alternative profession Here is another reason to like the eco-friendly Abhay Deol. He is into yoga and even teaches people who are willing to learn. He has been giving yoga lessons to fitness addicts Bipasha Basu and Josh Hartnett in Bhopal because they do not have a gym at their disposal. His classes are becoming increasingly popular with the cast and crew. —

Sham Sevara to Cronje lamb
For a meal with a homely touch, Sutlej Club in the city is the favourite destination for many.“We have been working with the club for the past 12 years and we keep reinventing ourselves to please the guests,” says Thakur as he directs the waiter to serve us Sham Sevara, an interesting rice and spinach dish and Cronje lamb, a crispy fried shredded lamb in soya sauce.
One can sit in the dining room and watch TV or relax in The Spinn restro bar or sip a lemon soda on the terrace. The club has sprawling lawns, which often are the venue for birthday parties. “We find it homely and the food is just right, though the service sometimes is quite slow,” says Harvinder Chhatwal, a frequent visitor to the club. The catering manager Inderjeet Walia is quick to explain, “It is definitely is a task to please everybody here and you can see the boys running around.” There are five chefs working here. Randy, who makes it a point to visit the club with his friends, finds the Mexican and Chinese food quite up to the mark. Another group of 20 chat merrily in the gazebo as they are being served murg nawab tikka and khas khas seekh kabab. For variety, the club offers food from different states by organising food festivals. “A Kashmiri food festival was quite a hit and now the coming event is “Bade miyan ki Biryani and Chotte Mina Ke Kabab”. The club is a hit among the women. As socialite Indu Bhaskar puts in, “I prefer this place for a homely meal with my friends.” She orders a sizzler and her friend goes for sandwiches and coffee. We recommend this place for taking your guests out when you are in no mood to don the apron. |
green thumb Let me introduce you to two new tree species that grow very well here but have somehow escaped the gaze of garden lovers. We are normally looking for a tree in the garden that forms a good, confined and disciplined canopy. One of the best trees to fit this description is Dellinia indica, locally known as Chalta tree. A medium-sized tree, it can be trained to have a controlled canopy like a perfect umbrella. Being an indigenous tree, it can withstand even frost to some extent. It needs some protection against hot summer sun in the initial stages of growth. The leaves of this tree are very big and unusual, say 20 to 35 cm long and very attractive. They are light green with serrated (saw like) margin. The tree bears bold white flowers too. Even the opening bud is also of the size of an apple. It is fragrant too. Chalta is also known by another name, the Elephant Apple due to its bold apple sized fruit, which however, is deep green in colour. Those who know about it, eat it by using as spice or making pickles or candy. The tree is propagated by way of seeds. As you open the fruit, you find small seeds that can be sown immediately after extraction. Another important tree in this region could be Chinar. Do not hesitate in growing it here. It grows without any hassles. Someone planted it in Sector 21 park too and for the local Kashmiris, the sight is nostalgic. An avenue has been created with this tree in the Sarangpur Botanical Garden where it is growing with all its glory. It can easily be propagated by way of cuttings in January when the tree is dormant. (Narula is a horticulturist.) |
Going by the label
Most wine drinkers are not able to make out the difference between the cheap wines and those that cost up to six times as much, a taste test has shown.A recent study suggests that many wine drinkers were simply paying for the label when they buy expensive bottle. As many as 578 people participated in a ‘blind’ taste challenge that took place at the Edinburgh Science Festival. The test participants were given a range of red and white wines, which were priced less than 5 pounds while vintages were priced between 10 and 30 pounds. They were told to say which were cheap and which were expensive. According to the laws of chance, 50 per cent of their guess should have been correct and this was exactly their level of accuracy. This showed that the volunteers could not distinguish between wines just by tasting it. “People were unable to tell expensive from inexpensive wines, and so in these times of financial hardship the message is clear - the inexpensive wines we tested tasted the same as their expensive counterparts,” said Richard Wiseman, a professor from the University of Hertfordshire, who led the research. — IANS |
