Five booked in fraud case
Ambala, April 12 The police said local jewellers Sanjay and Pardeep had inspected gold ornaments on the direction of bank officials for the sanctioned the loan and issued a certificate of purity to the bank, which was fake. Bank sources said not a single loan instalment was paid by the accused in the past one-and-a-half years, which made them suspicious and gold ornaments were got checked again and were found impure. The police started investigations after registering a case against five persons, including the two jewellers. |

Wheat procurement begins at Dera Bassi
Dera Bassi, April 12 Some farmers were forced to go to the grain markets of Haryana due to the delay on the part of government purchasing agencies. Market committee officials said nearly 1,500 quintal wheat was purchased in the grain markets of Lalru yesterday out of the total arrival of 4,000 quintal wheat. Markfed, Warehouse, Punjab Agro and the FCI had started procuring wheat at Lalru, Jarout and Tasimbli. Nearly 400 quintal wheat was purchased in the grain markets of Dera Bassi, out of 1,200 quintal arrival, till yesterday by Punjab Agro and the FCI. Secretary of the Dera Bassi market committee said this time wheat procurement was being done at the new grain market at Dhanouni, which was spread on 10 acre. Earlier, farmers were forced to take their crop to congested one-and-a-half-acre grain market in a residential area. He expressed hope of more wheat arrival in this market than last year. |

Literacy camp for jail inmates
Ambala, April 12 He promised them that their problems would be brought to the notice of the District and Sessions Judge, who is also the chairman of the District Legal Social Authority. A retired ASI of the Railway police said his pension was not being paid to him since he was confined to the jail. Another undertrial said he hailed from UP and was not being given an advocate free of cost for the past four months. Malik said that anyone whose annual income was less than Rs 75,000 and belonged to the general class could get the benefit of free legal aid. Under the law, women, freedom fighters and their families, persons belonging to the Scheduled Castes and destitute were entitled for free legal aid, irrespective of their annual income. He said majority of the criminal acts were committed under the influence of intoxicants like liquor, opium, poppy husk, smack etc. He appealed to the jail inmates to pledge not to take intoxicants. On the appeal of Malik they raised their hands to desist from taking intoxicants. |

2 thieves nabbed in Pinjore
Panchkula, April 12 A police team, led by SHO Dalip Singh of the Pinjore police station, apprehended two thieves near Mallah turn point, when they were trying to escape in an Indica car. However, their third accomplice, identified as Sammi, managed to escape from the site. Hari Dass received a fracture in his leg as he made a futile attempt to flee from the site. A case has been registered in the Pinjore police station and a laptop, silver jewellery worth Rs 95,000 and Indica car were recovered from the accused. The two accused were produced in a court today which remanded them to judicial custody at Central Jail, Ambala. Further investigation in the case was on and the police was claiming to arrest the remaining accused soon. |
YPS come down heavy on Scindia school
Patiala, April 12 Meanwhile, the matches were delayed due to rain showers in the morning. Batting first, YPS, Patiala, scored 200 runs for the loss of four wickets in the allotted 20 overs. The main scorers for the hosts were Viren (87) runs and Harkirat (49), while the main wicket-takers for Scindia School, Gwalior, were Harshwardhan (1 for 21) and Piyush Mittal (1 for 36). In reply, Scindia School, Gwalior, scored 77 for nine wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Hockey carnival begins today
Ropar, April 12 Jatinder Singh Aulakh, SSP, Ropar, and the president of the organising committee of the festival, said Chaudhary Swarna Ram, the Minister for Technical Education, Social Security and Women and Child Development, Punjab, shall inaugurate the festival at 3 pm. SS Saini, general secretary of the Hawks Club, said 12 teams would participate in festival. The final match would be played on April 17 at 2 pm. The festival woul be covered by Punjabi channel PTC News, Fastways and Doordarshan Jalandhar. Winning team would be given a cash prize of Rs 51,000, besides the winning trophy. Runner up would get the cash prize of Rs 31,000. All players would receive individual prizes. |

Tarundeep wins Baisakhi junior golf
Chandigarh, April 12 Karandeep Kochhar and Kartik Digvijay Singh were also tied after regulation time in the C Category. In the play-off, Kartik played a better game to clinch Fresh from his triumph in the CGA junior championship, Harsh Gangwar emerged winner in the B Category, with Aadil Bedi romping home winner in the D Category. The girls' event was won by Natasha Gill with Jaipreet Ghuman finishing second. The Chandigarh Golf Club also gave green jackets to five “Players of the year” in different age categories after the completion of five tournaments in the Junior Golf Mission 2016 started by Chandigarh Golf Club president BS Gill. Those given the green jackets for topping their respective categories were Aadil Bedi (D Category), Karandeep Kochhar (C Category), Feroz Grewal (B Category), Tarundeep Chadha (A Category) and Jaipreet Ghuman (overall girls' category).
