Ramp Age
Fashion designer Neeru Kumar, known as the textile expert, opened the first day of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) by showcasing a fusion of Indian and western influences in her ramp debut.
Kumar, whose client list includes names like Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Mira Nair and Shabana Azmi, is participating in a fashion show for the first time in past three decades. True to her style, Kumar's collection was a tribute to Indian textiles and showed overlay jackets in variable sizes, sarees astutely teamed with short jackets, tucked in blouses, and thin linear leather belts along with flowing umbrella skirts with asymmetric hemlines. "We are very textile driven, we weave our own fabrics. This collection was a balance between Indian and western with breezy silhouettes," Kumar said. She was followed by Gaurav Jai Gupta, who took the weavers tale forwards with his use of fabrics like cotton and silk with emphasise on box-pleating going all the way down to the hemlines. Next came Kallol Dutta to break all conventions with his collection, which dealt with deconstruction and non-comprehensible shapes. Designer Urvashi Kaur also focused on Indian textiles and fabrics, using them in a contemporary style. Hand-loomed fabric and weaves like chanderi, tussar, woven silk, self patterned linen and wool jersey gave life to the silhouettes. Talking about her show, which began with a spiritual dance, Urvashi said, "My collection indicates the journey of life towards death and so the colour palate goes from brighter colours towards black, signifying nothingness." Paras and Shalini brought in the Western touch with their collection of chiffon evening gowns and dresses in muted colours, while veteran duo Mona Pali held their own with Kurtas, churidars and sarees using nets, tussar and satin. With a mixture of old and new talents, the autumn-winter edition of WIFW has about 141 designers participating, with 77 displaying their creations on the ramp. —

Nothing FALTU in it To begin with, nothing was in favour of the film. Before the release, it was rumoured to be a remake of the Hollywood flick Accepted. Directed by the choreographer-turned-director Remo Fernandes, the movie also had no big names to boast of. Then, to top it all, the movie was named F.A.L.T.U, suggesting a frivolous storyline. And to top it all, the release date was fixed as April 1. "We thought that nobody would take us seriously but the perception changed post the release of the movie. There is nothing faltu about the film, except for its title," comes from the jubilant Remo, in the city on Wednesday along with the lead pair of the film, Jackky Bhagnani and Pooja Gupta, to promote the film. And more about the film flowed in. Candid call
Remo was as candid talking about the film, as he was as the judge of the reality show Dance India Dance. He doesn't mind telling what made the movie possible, "Had it not been for Jacky Bhagnani in the lead role, I don't think dad Vashu Bhagnani would have produced it all. It's still not easy for an outsider to make a mark in Bollywood." The movie, to his respite, has done quite well at the box office, "That's because the subject of the movie concerns a large population of mediocre students. The movie is about the treatment meted out to low scoring students in India." For him, directing the movie was the biggest risk he has ever taken in his life. "People know me as a choreographer in the industry. If the movie hadn't done well at the box office, it would have affected my reputation as a choreographer." At the same time, after movies like Band Baja Baraat and Udaan having minted money at the box office, he feels the industry is gradually accepting new comers. "Although it's difficult, I think I'll be able to survive without joining any camp." Tough deal
Jacky has all the luck by his side. One his film is doing well and two, which he says matters more to him is, "I almost caught the winning six that Dhoni hit into the stands at the World cup finals. My film released on the same day, Team India lifted the World Cup." Despite his father being a big producer in the industry, he says, it wasn't easy for him to get the film. "I took me six films as an assistant director, losing 65 kgs, getting cured for asthma and a lot of training in acting, to bag the film. Ironically, it wasn't as easy as everybody thinks it to be." He adds that the pressure to perform well multiplies if your family is a part of Bollywood. Luck factor
Hardwork does help one earn success, but you can't rule out the luck factor. Pooja was spotted by Jacky in one of the parties and then recommended to the director (or maybe producer-dad for that matter!). About the film, she says, "It's a very relevant movie as it concerns students who don't do very well in studies. Instead of putting the blame on students, it's important to realise that youngsters are forced to take up subjects against their wishes. Hence, the poor results." Well, this is worth a thought. |
THE UNPRINTABLE
The fact that we can't write name of the album, Saali Bi*** as it is, without the use of asterisks, is enough to indicate the controversial part of it. Using 'bold' lyrics is not something new to hip-hop artiste Ishq Bector. He has done it with his extremely popular tracks, Aye Hip Hopper and Jhagde for which he teamed up with Rakhi Sawant. Yet Ishq tells the difference, "I deleted certain words and lines from the earlier tracks which the Censor Board didn't approve. This time, I wanted the song to reach my fans as it is, so I released the album online instead." For TV viewers, Ishq has a decent version of the song, Saali Mirch, replacing the 'more' controversial word, though, given a chance; he would stick to the original lyrics. "The words used in the song are what people use in their daily conversation. I have always preferred to write songs in the language of the youngsters," says Ishq, who was in Chandigarh on Thursday to launch his music album, produced by Universal Music. He thought of the song, when one of his friends was betrayed by his girlfriend. The video of the song hasn't been released online, for which he is seeking a clearance from the government. "That's because a number of dogs have been used in the album. We need to authenticate that no dog was hurt during the shoot to avoid any issues with animal activists." Another track in the album is Hey Happy Singh, again a peppy one. "I balanced my album with a romantic number, a spiritual Mere Siva and a Sufi track, written by my mother, Sipher." He has also taken up Bheja Fry 2, his first Bollywood project. "Composing music for Bollywood has been my ultimate aim." Just as the title of his latest album comes as a surprise, so does his praise for Rakhi Sawant. "We did an album together because her sensibilities matched mine. If I am crazy for music, she is for dance." As for the tantrums she throws, he says, "Make no mistake. Everything is well thought, she is no fool to say or do just anything. Rakhi is very smart and that's why she is so popular in the entertainment industry." Well not everyday, we hear good things about controversial Sawant. ashima@tribunemail.com |

Chatter box Television actors confess about in which actor's shoes they would love to be to play the role that he/she is playing on TV. Find out which is the dream role of your favourite face on the telly..the roles they absolutely fancy... Sulagna Panigrahi:I would definitely choose to play Phoebe from Friends. She is goofy and fun and I would love to play a dumb blond. There are just two kinds of roles on the Indian television you either play the protagonist who keeps crying all the time or the wicked vamp. So there is no role on TV that I aspire to play. Parneet Bhaat:The role that I love on Indian television is Maan (played by Gurmeet Choudhry) in Geet Hui Sab Se Parayi. I feel the role is interesting, challenging and has a lot of depth. A lot of serials on particular channels are showing what used to happen in the past but Geet Hui Sab Se Parayi is the story of contemporary India and Maan behaves like any youngster today would react to situations. I also love all the characters of the English show 24 and given a chance I would love to play any of them. Ratan Rajput:One role that I think I would enjoy playing the most would be Gangubai (played by Saloni Daini) in Comedy Circus. I love the cuteness and wittiness of Gangubai. So that would be my dream role, which I aspire to play in the future. Iqbal Khan:My dream role will definitely be Jack Kiefer (played by Kiefer Suitherland) from 24. Anyone who has watched the show would know why. There is so much scope to perform and it can bring out the best in an actor. Abigail Jain:The role that I think is perfect for me is Phoebe, played by Lisa Kudrow from the sitcom Friends. The reason is because I feel she resembles the way I am in real life (laughs). Shakti Anand:One role I would love to play is Jack Kiefer (played by Kiefer Suitherland) in The English show 24. The role is so powerful and has so much scope. Given a chance I would to play that role. Aman Verma:The role that I would love to play from Indian TV would be Pankaj Kapur’s role in Karamchand. Among the English shows it would be Kelsey Grammer’s role in Fraiser, Ray Ramano's role in Everybody Loves Raymond and Joey played by MattLeBlanc in Friends. — HRM Naitik aka Karan Mehra of Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai on STAR Plus started his career with designing before he turned to acting. Multi-talented Karan has recently designed an entire line of saris and also modelled for the brand called Eternal Love along with his girlfriend Nisha Rawal. Here is a tete-a-tete with Karan about his passion for designing. When and how did you come up with the idea designing your own line of saris? I did design for movie stars before I started acting. But it was only recently that decided to get back into designing when a design studio approached me to create an entire line of saris for them. However, my role is not limited to just designing. My girlfriend Nisha and I are the brand ambassadors of my label Eternal Love and have shot an ad in Chomu Palace, Jaipur. It is the same place where the movie Bhool Bhulaiya was shot. Actually we chose the location of the shoot so there was a lot of creative involvement from our side. Tell us about your background in design? To tell you the truth, my interest in designing began very suddenly and unexpectedly. I remember during my summer job at a Domino’s pizza outlet in college, I used to randomly sketch and paint whenever I had the time. My paintings were appreciated and that’s when I realised my penchant towards it. I always wanted to be a model, so I decided to pursue modelling and designing together. What encouraged me further was when I passed my National Institute of Fashion Technology exams with flying colours and became the topper of my college. Who did you enjoy designing for most? That would be difficult to choose since I have worked with names like Raju Hirani and Ram Gopal Varma. I enjoyed designing for everyone right from Amitabh Bachchan to Rajpal Yadav and cricketer Yuvraj Singh. How did the shift from designing to acting happen? Acting was always my first love but designing helped me achieve my dream and got me my first break. I was offered the lead role in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai while I was pursuing designing. After that there was no looking back. Who is your style icon in TV and films? Amitabh Bachchan is always superbly turned out. Most TV and film actress carry Indian outfits well. Who are your favourite designers? I like Vikram Phadnis and Sabyasachi since as he has brought a lot of new trends into the market. — HRM |
Govinda and newbie Yuvika Chaudhary were caught in a tough spot recently when they had to shoot a romantic scene for their coming film Naughty@40 at Madh Island. “Yuvika and Govinda had to do a romantic scene, but around afternoon the area where they were shooting started stinking of fish. Initially, things were still bearable, but the stench grew so much that the entire unit had to tie towels on their nose and mouth to escape the torture,” said a source from the unit. “The situation was bad because of the stink and both the actors had to shoot a romantic scene. Every time they had to do the scene they would uncover the nose. This made the situation funny as Yuvika kept on spraying her perfume every now and then. The stench made things very difficult,” added the source. Naughty@40 is a comedy being directed by Jagmohan Mundhra. — IANS |

Poha or chivdaa is a rolled form of rice which is very popular, especially in Maharashtra. It is quick and easy cooking as well as light and nourishing. It is often added to dosa batter for a new variation and texture. Being a straight derivative of a cereal, it is a better food option as compared to other ground ingredients used for binding dosas and cutlets. Most namkeen shop sells you the ever popular crispy fried chiwda, dotted with peanuts. A quick stir fry of poha with with heeng, mustard seeds and curry leaves makes a superb snack. You can smuggle in lots of veggies, the kids won't complain! Cook this in a really hot karhai or frying pan to prevent sticking. Poha is also called it beaten rice though I prefer the term 'flattened' rice. "Beaten" to me, sounds very jihaadi or aatankvaadi! Poha Tikkis 1 cup poha 3 slices brown bread 1 medium sized onion 1 tsp jeera 1 tsp ginger garlic paste 1 green chilli 3 tbsp rice flour 1 ½ tbsp coriander leaves Salt to taste Oil for shallow frying Method Soak poha in a cup of water for no longer than 10 minutes. Dip bread in 1 cup of milk and squeeze out after 15 minutes. Lightly toast the jeera on a tawa. Finely chop the onion and green chilli. Now mix together the poha, bread, ginger-garlic paste, rice flour, jeera, onion, coriander and salt. You may add a little bit of chilli powder or garam masala if you are inclined. Shape the mixture into thin flat tikkis . Use minimal oil to shallow fry on a hot non-stick pan. The resulting tikkis will be soft, not crisp. If you prefer the crisp version, deep fry the shaped tikkis! Tip You can add bean-sprouts to the mixture for a nourishing twist. For a royal version, moisten the tikkis and roll them in nibbed cashews. (Nijhowne is a culinary expert) |
My son is 19-years-old and very intelligent, but he is extremely lazy; prefers to sleep till 12 pm. He is very unhygienic and despite my constant pestering he does not get a haircut, does not shave or cut his nails. He is not even able to help in the family responsibilities because of his laziness. Please help. If he is doing fine in school and does things he likes doing then it is not mere laziness, but a lack of discipline. Usually, parents may ask a child to follow a routine but are unable to implement it. Remember one thing, decide on a few things you would like him to follow at home and discuss it with him. Ensure that it gets done. Implement what you say. Praise often. Teaching and encouraging your children to become responsible usually starts by requiring them to do certain chores around the house like taking out the garbage, washing the dishes, or folding clothes and cleaning their cupboards. Be firm about these. Be clear and specific about what you want. Explain the reason behind assigning these tasks, as it will help him develop values. Spend time as a family at meals, go out for a walk or a movie to build a bond. Set the rules
My daughter is 16-years-old. She was a responsible child earlier but slowly she has stopped helping out at home. She is more interested in dressing up, doing her hair and makeup. This year she threatened to eat some pills when I scolded her over the length of her skirt and actually did so. She was in hospital for five days. How can I discipline her? Stay in touch with her teachers — see if she is falling behind in school as well? Monitor her friends. Get to know them. Introduce her and meet family or friends where the children are focused and following careers. However, do not compare her with them. Be clear about what clothes she can wear and what she cannot. Discuss it with her and reach an agreement. Then stick to what has been decided. Do not change rules under pressure. However, be reasonable - you can discuss with other parents to see what they allow and then reach a balance of what you are comfortable with. Determine what behaviour you wish to change in your child. Set a specific set of goals for every good deed and then reward it; show the child that good behaviour means better rewards. |
Remains of ‘Mona Lisa’ to be dug up The remains of a woman believed to have been the model for Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa will be exhumed in a bid to recreate her face.Professor Silvano Vinceti, a modern-day Indiana Jones investigator, will lead the team that will exhume the remains. The coffin of noblewoman Lisa Gherardini Del Giocondo is believed to be buried at the Saint Orsola convent in Florence. She is thought to have been the woman behind the enigmatic smile of the 'Mona Lisa', the 500-year-old painting that is one of the most recognisable images in the world. Vinceti said the aim of the dig is to find her bones and extract the DNA so they can rebuild her face. "An initial survey of the building has revealed a 500-year-old crypt in the grounds below and we firmly believe it is the resting place of Lisa Gherardini, who was the inspiration for 'Mona Lisa'," he said."We will compare the DNA that we find in the bones from the former convent to those of remains in two other churches in Florence where two of her children are buried," the daily quoted him as saying.Lisa Gherardini, who died in 1542, was the wife of a rich silk merchant named Francesco del Giocondo. In Italy, the 'Mona Lisa' is known as 'La Gioconda'. Historians have already discovered her death certificate, which gives the resting place as the Saint Orsola convent. Digging will begin at the end of the month. Ground searching radar will be used to locate the crypt. — IANS |
