High on DESIGN
The five-day Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2011 is being perceived as a business platform with a lot of glamour
Manpriya Khurana

Collections by 141 designers are some stats even by the assembly line production standards! Curtains are yet to go up on the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2011, but we know what to expect from the five-day fashion affair to be held in New Delhi. Little bit of similarity, loads of creativity and lots of business.

"I would describe it as B2B glamour event, in short a business platform with lots of glamour," Sunil Sethi, president, Fashion Design Council Of India describes the USP of the event.

To begin with, at the bi-annual prêt fashion week, there will be 41 shows displaying the creativity of 77 designers. Names like Anamika Khanna, Charu Parashar, Gaurav Gupta, Masaba, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Tarun Tahiliani, Varun Bahl figure on the show schedules.

Designer Ritu Kumar will present her collection under the brand Label, comprising designs inspired by Silk Route explorers in the 19th century while Sabyasachi Mukherjee will be the grand finale designer. Shantanu-Nikhil, known for their edgy cuts, will present their new bridge brand S&N Drape. The brand draws in influences from Indian vintage colours and cultures. Known as much for his showstoppers as his collections, Manish Malhotra will be there as well .

History seems to win hands-down with designers this time. Designer duo Ankur-Priyanka Modi too will present a vintage inspired line with a contemporary touch. "London's Portobello Road" is what the designers give their credit to. "Many throng this place for all things vintage."

Interestingly, some of the big names such as Nachiket Barve, Rina Dhaka, Ranna Gill and Wendell Rodricks will not hit the runway and will showcase through stalls. This brings the total count to as many as 141, the highest ever and a steep addition from the last year's count.

Some may debate over whether the surge in names making it to the event would undermine its exclusivity, but for the fashion fraternity it's the more the merrier. Opines Sunil Sethi, "I don't think more names would in any way effect the event's exclusivity. In India, first love is cricket, then comes Bollywood, and if we are able to bring fashion after that, we'd be very happy…There are 200 buyers on the list and 350 media people, which signifies an unprecedented interest in fashion. Our idea is to promote fashion." He adds, "Not every designer could get a show and you can't have same 10 names monopolising. In fact, the seniors themselves encourage the young brigade." To give due platform to upcoming names, 15 designers showcase under the high 5 category. On the other end, 11 new female models take to the ramp.

Last but not the least, we guess, the prestigious front row will remain not just similar, but rather the same!

Are you ready for filmy plays?
The five-day Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2011 is being perceived as a business platform with a lot of glamour
Esha Sahor Lepcha

If we say that Vijay Anand, a Chennai-based theatre actor, beautifully portrays the character of Chris Gardner in his play The Pursuit of Happyness, the first thought that comes to mind is — 'that's a popular English film and Will Smith is the protagonist. Who is Vijay Anand?'

Now there lies the catch. The film has been turned into a play with the same characters, scenes, emotions and moods. The only difference is the faces. Vijay is the Chris Gardener here and the play is a different take altogether. Down South, this is an ongoing culture and audiences accept this novelty.

"Many people here are not aware of this kind of theatre. The first time when I came up with this plan to perform The Pursuit of Happyness here, I faced a lot of criticism initially," says Vijay Anand.

So will the crowd here appreciate such efforts with interest? "I have been writing and enacting plays for the last 23 years. I remember a point when we ran out of scripts and I thought why not transform films into plays. Thus, Reservoir Dogs, It's A Wonderful Life, 12 Angry Men, Christmas Carol et al came into being, also as onstage dramas. People have loved these plays in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. I don't know the scenario in Chandigarh, but if I come here I just cannot take an American script and slap it on stage. I might have to Indianise it a bit," says Michael Mutthu, actor-director.

It is not an easy task to establish scenes the way they are put together in the film. "Films are a gorgeous medium but theatre has its own vocabulary. Stage performances are highly effective if done aesthetically. I have never watched such plays, which are an adaptation of English films in our city but if my students want to come up with something new like this, I will encourage them, but the script should not lose its essence on stage," adds Neelam Mansingh Chowdhry, ex-chairperson and guest faculty, Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University. She adds, "Theatre as a profession is not that paying and experiment can prove risky if it is a matter of bread and butter.”

However, one has to understand the target audience. “I cannot take an English play to a place like Hissar and for that matter even Chandigarh. People have differences of taste and preference," says Atul Satya Koushik, president of The Films and Theatre Society (Delhi) and director of the play Koobar aur Kaaki.

So, can this be the next popular culture in town?

Happy-go-lucky!
Actor Surveen Chawla was in Chandigarh to promote her upcoming film Dharti
Ashima Sehajpal

Clear symptoms of the hangover of winning the World Cup aren't very difficult to make out. Everything else takes a backseat and the only thing one wants to talk about is cricket; how the win was celebrated, the excitement levels et al.

The symptoms were present in Surveen Chawla as well, who was in the city to promote her upcoming film Dharti. Rather than addressing the immediate cause, she spoke more about cricket, no wonder she was a part of a dance reality show in which Sreesanth was her partner! "I was busy touring different cities for the promotion of the film but all this while I was thinking about the match. I used to check out the score with just about anybody I passed by." After India won the World Cup, she did text Sreesanth to congratulate him, "I always wished for the fabulous job the team did."

Finally, she switched gears to her film. "I play the main lead in the film. My character is of a happy-go-lucky girl from Chandigarh, who loves to drive bikes." She stars opposite the mainstream actor Jimmy Shergill.

Excited about making a debut in films, she doesn't regret not getting a break in Bollywood first. "So many Bollywood actors have been a part of Punjabi cinema. The production quality of the films here is at par with Bollywood, there is no reason why I should have given second preference to Punjabi cinema." She immediately cites the example of Mel Karade Rabba, which broke all overseas records. "That also gives us a cue about the huge fan base of the Punjabi Cinema. If the film is worth it, it would do well." Punjabi film industry is not the only regional cinema she has been a part of. Surveen already has four South Indian films to her credit. "What matters is getting to do substantial roles," and for the same reason, she looks up to Priyanka Chopra and Rani Mukherji. "Despite being a male-dominated industry, they have played quality characters in Bollywood films."

Surveen is now focusing her attention only on the film promotion. "Next on cards is promoting the film in North India, Canada and the UK. We plan to premiere the film in Australia as well." Isn't that enough to prove that Punjabi cinema is flourishing?

Spot those fading leaves

While roaming in your garden it gives you immense satisfaction to find everything in order. However, one day you find fading of leaves, especially near the base of the plant, and you think it is the normal senescence process. Later, the fresh leaves turn half-yellow and you catch it. There is something wrong. Yes, definitely that's the case.

The pre-mature leaf fall in roses is as a result of tikka, a fungal disease. On a closer look, you will find a black tikka in yellow spot with fringed margin on both sides of the leaf. But why this premature leaf fall? The fungus in this case emits ethylene that is responsible for ageing in leaf, flowers and fruits. Even raindrop splashes could spread it from leaf to leaf.

Sanitation in this case is very important. Remove all the dead and yellow leaves from plant as well as the bed. You just have to touch it and it will fall off. Destroy them; spray bavistin, dissolved at one gram to a litre of water. Keep looking in the garden and you will be able to identify many things, the insects, diseases, as well as physical and physiological injuries.

Also check out for zigzag lines on leaves of dahlia, nasturtium, cineraria and many other winter annuals, besides a few vegetables like matar, saag and fruits like that of citrus family and peach. This, in fact, is the trail of leaf miner insect. The nymph moves and feeds on the leaf sap moving in a zigzag fashion creating a covering of parchment like surface so that it escapes birds or even sprays. For the control of this insect, therefore, some systemic insecticide is sprayed. Use sprar rogor, dissolved in one millilitre to a litre of water. Repeat the spray after a fortnight.

Teens who read less likely to be depressed

Teenagers who devote more time to reading books are far less likely to suffer from depression than their peers who listen to music.

The study was one of the first to use an intensive "real-life" methodology, called ecological momentary assessment, to study behaviours in real time. The method helped researchers recognise this large association between exposure to music and depression, said Brian Primack, assistant professor of medicine and paediatrics at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, who led the study. The study involved 106 adolescents, 46 of whom were diagnosed with major depressive disorder, the journal Archives of Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine reports.

Researchers called the participants as many as 60 times during five extended weekends over two months and asked them whether they were using any of six types of media: TV or movies, music, video games, Internet, magazines or newspapers, books. They found that young people who were exposed to the most music, compared to those who listened to music the least, were 8.3 times more likely to be depressed, according to a statement. — IANS

Trend Setter
Ethnic calling

Heads turn when fashion statements are made and when the fashionistas combine it with studied elegance, they become the cynosure of all eyes. Dr Muskaan Dogra from DMC, wants to mould fashion according to the occasion.

Your sense of style is…

Depends on how happy my inner self is. Being a die-hard romantic and my love for all antique stuff makes me a fan of ethnic wear.

Latest addition to your wardrobe…

A carrot-coloured semi-formal lehnga from Ritu Kumar's; it goes well for casual as well as formal occasions.

Brand crazy or street pick-up types…

They have to be casually smart and of course brands give me a high! Jeans have to be only Levis for me. For ethnic wear, I would even pick it from fairs, street shops etc.

Choose a look — chic, sporty or glamourous…

Chic all the way.

My style icon is…

My mom, I suppose her sense of style and elegance is a thing I would like to inculcate

The worst dressed celebrity is…

I find Britney Spears dressing style very odd; she mixes and matches terribly.

One fashion trend that is beyond your comprehension…

I cannot comprehend when girls have to expose to look fashionable, just look at the Pakistani girls - all covered but they look so
fashionable!

Your take on accessories…

I am not too comfortable with many accessories though I do admire them on others.

What gives you a high …

The glint of admiration in the other's eyes!

(As told to Poonam Bindra.)

Where’s Shahana  gone wrong?
Shahana Goswami is a dusky and voluptuous beauty and a terrific actress to boot. She wears dresses, blouses with jeans, and the like. She has immense scope for improvement. She has been trying to lose weight for a very long time. We think she is fine the way she is. She will look beautiful in sarees and traditional suits in vibrant hues.

Girl in Trouble

Shahana plays a young and poor Muslim mother on the lookout for safety and protection post the riots in Gujarat. With the scarf and simple Indian suit and simple eye make-up, she is completely into the character. You can almost feel her pain.

Casual disaster

The short hair suits her and the eye make-up brings out the beauty of her eyes but we do not like the Chinese-collared top. She looks better with black hair.

Dressy Diva

Shahana shows off her curvaceous figure in this smart blue dress with black accessories. Her hair is poker straight and her make-up has the right amount of dazzle. We like the neck-piece and sexy strappy sandals. She is an icon for fuller women everywhere.

Lady in White

The little-white-dress fits her well and we like that she has changed her hair. We like the simplicity of the look and the sandals are pretty too. We do wish her make-up was brighter.

Paltrow facing weight issues

Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow is facing weight issues after she was banned from working out while filming new movie Country Strong'.

The 38-year-old actress, who plays the role of alcoholic singer Lisa Canter in the movie, admitted she "panicked" when she found out she wouldn't be able to follow her usual exercise regime."At first I was a bit panicked about it, so I'd start working out a little bit. A lot of people lie the other way and say, 'Yeah, I work out five times a week,' when they actually don't, whereas I was saying, 'No, no. I didn't work out,' when actually I was on the treadmill."It was then that I was like, 'Right, I have got to stop.' But it wasn't until we were finishing the movie that my body completely fell apart. My body was doing OK right up until the end. Then it just started falling to pieces, so now I am left with bulging problems," said Paltrow.

The blonde beauty explained she is aware there are "no free rides" when it comes to achieving a svelte physique, and she stays in shape by undergoing "horrible, long exercise".When asked how she stays in shape, the mother-of-two added, "Exercise! Painful, horrible, long exercise. I know from experience that there are no free rides in this world." — PTI

You'll soon experience peace and security. Affairs concerning home, marriage, love will be in prime position. You may feel cheated in speculation. So steer clear of easy money.

Sanjay Suri (April 6, 1971, Srinagar) who entered Bollywood with a supporting role in the movie Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, co-starring Rinky Khanna and Dino Morea, shares his birthday with you. With his next few films, Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence, Filhaal and the musical Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, Suri proved his mettle as a fine actor. In Pinjar, co-starring Urmila Matondkar, he got rave reviews but it wasn't until Jhankaar Beats that he became popular. His role opposite Juhi Chawla was greatly appreciated. In 2005, he delivered a critically acclaimed performance in My Brother… Nikhil, as a homosexual AIDS victim. Alibaug and I Am could shoot his career up in the industry.
