No afternoon water supply in city for fortnight

The city will have no afternoon water supply in the coming fortnight. The water supply will be affected due to a major repair in the Bhakra canal by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). The city will not be getting 37 million gallons per day (MGD) out of its total share of 67 MGD.

Tremors felt in city

City residents experienced tremors at nearly 5 pm today. The quake that measured 5.7 on the Richter Scale had its epicentre 363 km from Delhi.

Liquor to cost more in city from May 1
Chandigarh, April 4
Getting drunk will cost you more from May 1. The next time you gulp beer to beat the heat, be ready to shell out Rs 5-10 more.Ditto for all major brands of whisky whose prices will shoot up by Rs 15-30 per bottle following a steep hike in various taxes in the Excise Policy 2011-12 announced by the Chandigarh Administration today. The policy makes a departure from the existing system of allotment of liquor shops by inviting applications by introducing a system of inviting tenders for the allotment of the liquor vends.

PU students to get grades in exams now
Nod to semester system in PG courses
Chandigarh, April 4
Semester system would be implemented in all post-graduate courses offered by Panjab University (PU) in its teaching departments and affiliated colleges from the academic session 2011-2012. Additionally, grades would be allotted to students along with marks in all under-graduate and post-graduate course examinations. A special committee, formed by the university Senate at its meeting on March 29, took these decisions today in a meeting.

Governor invites pvt industry to meet internal security needs
Chandigarh, April 4
Governor Shivraj Patil at an exhibition on internal security in Chandigarh on Monday. Stating that the central paramilitary forces need a wide variety of equipment for modernisation and upgrading their capability to meet emerging security requirements, the Governor of Punjab, Shivraj Patil, called upon the industry to join hands with the government for fulfilling this requirement indigenously.

GMCH to start day care centre for thalassaemia patients
Chandigarh, April 4
In an attempt to bring some relief to the patients suffering from thalassaemia, the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, here is to start a separate “thalassaemia day care centre” dedicated solely to the care of such patients. This will facilitate the patients who are already undergoing treatment at the hospital along with catering to the overflow of patients at PGI.

Mayor recommends disciplinary action against six SDOs

Municipal Corporation (MC) Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh (Pali) has recommended disciplinary action against six SDOs for not attending the ward committee meeting of Sector 46 scheduled for today. He has asked MC Commissioner Roshan Sunkaria to take disciplinary action against them.

Five seek discharge

Five accused in the Jammu and Kashmir sex scandal case have sought discharge from the case, as witnesses have turned hostile in the past hearings. They included Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Raman Mattoo, former J&K ministers; Iqbal Khandey, IAS official; Anil Sethi, former Additional Advocate General (AAG); and Mohammad Ashraf Mir, former DSP. The five moved an application in court today demanding that they shall be discharged keeping in view that the witnesses turned hostile.

How reliable is this 44-yr-old transport system?

The system was introduced 44 years ago, but residents of the city still have to wonder whether the bus they have boarded will take them to their respective destination. With no route map or a timetable, around 517 CTU (Chandigarh Transport Undertaking) buses have caused losses running into crores while plying in the tricity which has a population of almost 16 lakh.

CTU incurs Rs 1.50 cr loss per month

MoU signed for exchange programme

The Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology (SSIET), Dera Bassi, and Wayne State University (WSU), Detroit, the USA, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for exchange of students and research scholars, scientific materials and publications, development of joint programmes for education and research and recruitment of students for undergraduate and postgraduate studies from either country on a reciprocal basis.

6,000 take AIPMT prelim exam

Over 6,000 city students took the All-India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) preliminary exam yesterday. The students who thronged over 120 tricity centres claimed that the paper was relatively easy and completely based on the Central Board of Secondary Education specified pattern and NCERT syllabus.

Youth killed in hit-and-run case
Chandigarh, April 4
In a hit-and-run case, a 27-year-old man was crushed to death by a truck near Bapu Dham Police Post in Sector 26 today. The deceased has been identified as Mohan Rana, resident of Kishangarh. He was employed as a waiter with a city-based caterer. The incident took place in the afternoon when the victim was on his way back home from Mohali on a bicycle.

19-acre sports complex approved in Mohali
