Marriage of convenience
More and more Punjabi singers are cutting albums in collaboration, as the trend provides impetus to the industry
Ashima Sehajpal

For the first time in 2006, Gurdas Mann, Sukhshinder Shinda and Albrar Ul Haq came together for a concert in the UK. The sponsors later sold albums of the show and aptly named it - Collaboration.

Taking inspiration from the 'fresh' idea, Punjabi singers literally started collaborating for their albums. However, there is a huge difference between the trendsetters and the followers. An industry insider explains, "The first album saw the three singers representing three different countries - India, UK and Pakistan. Their original tracks were picked in bits and pieces to give it the form of a complete song. Now, an album in collaboration means two singers coming together for a particular song."

In whichever way, the Punjabi singers have construed the term collaboration, the fact remains that the trend has provided impetus to the industry. The magic that Honey Singh and Diljit Dosanjh created with their first track, Panga, was recreated with the latest superhit Lak 28. If this isn't enough for Honey Singh's fans, his 22 collaboration numbers are slated for release in the next three months. He's also doing rap with Sardool Sikander, Malkit Singh and even the best UK female singers, (he does not want to divulge the names as of now) "If my generation of singers are following the trend, so are the legends like Sardool Sikander and Malkit Singh. Collaboration has helped us make the best of the music. It's like having 'paneer tikka cheese pizza', in which you get the best of the two worlds," informs Honey.

While the singers in the West took to collaboration much earlier, in India the concept was adopted later. Diljit Dosanjh bets for collaboration as an economically wise concept. "The chances of more people buying an album increase when various singers have contributed to it. Using each singer's fan base would mean that the album would be a hit," says Diljit. In addition, due to the high cost of production, collaboration makes it easier for singers to release their albums.

Says Jasbir Jassi, "It takes a minimum of Rs 10 lakh to cut an album. We also need a video to make a song more appealing and add to the promotion costs. And if this be the situation, producers will never take a chance with new singers." He adds that it's only due to collaborations that budding singers will get to make a debut in the industry.

While a few Punjabi singers prefer to collaborate , some are getting experimental. For instance, Jasbir Jassi in his last album, Jassi Back With Bang, sung a track composed by DJ Hamza. In another one, he collaborated with Jeff Bhaskar, a Grammy award winner. There was another track in which he collaborated with world-renowned percussionist, Adam Deitch.

"There isn't any rule stating that in one particular album, you can collaborate with just one artiste. Variety will boost the sale of the album. Be it working with another singer, DJ or musician, the ultimate result should be a hit number."

Even Diljit won't mind working with any number of artistes. "More the merrier. I am trying my best to rope in Akon.”

With Lak 28, the trend was carried forward to the Punjabi films. "We had it in The Lion Of Punjab and I think every upcoming Punjabi film would now introduce a collaboration," opines Raj Brar, of the album, Rebirth.

Although he vouches for the trend, he feels at the end only quality music, lyrics and singers would matter.

FESTidious!
Why popular Punjabi singers are grabbing the opportunity to perform at students' fests? For the known names, it's a barometer of popularity and for others a platform for publicity. Singers share what they like about performing in front of student crowds at various festivals
Manpriya Khurana

INSTANT LIFT: jASBIR JASSI

The latest fiasco at Jhankaar, the annual festival by campus students' council, reminds us of the year 2009. Back then Mika may have been banned and recently the function may have been interrupted, but neither the ruckus nor the rowdies will put an end to the festivities, for the singers and campus festivals are inseparable!

Don't the young crowds love them? Don't the performers need a ready audience? Singers share what they like about performing in front of student crowds. "Not just as a student, even otherwise I've performed at so many student festivals, be it Jhankaar or Aghaaz."

He adds, "The swaying and swinging, charged up crowds are infectious. That's the best part of performing in front of students and within the campus premises."

A star night is a staple at any festival. Back in 2008, PEC Festival had rapper Hard Kaur entertaining the crowds. Year 2009 had students running around for Honey Singh's show. The evening saw the headcount running into thousands. We've had Amrinder Gill night; Gippy Grewal, Jazzy B is yet another fixture and a favourite. In fact, those that haven't been here perhaps haven't been invited!

On a High: DJ Tantrick

Says Jasbir Jassi, "At such gatherings, generally the energy of the audience is different. It's instant and amazing. Anyways, making students dance to your beats, gives you a high." He adds, "And then of course you are also reminded of your own student days; what you did back then and how it was to be on the other side."

Though the names correspond to the budget of the respective institute, the festivals nevertheless rope in names as big as any commercial event. And in between the nostalgia and crowds, ready market is a reason big enough. As Jeet Jagjit puts it, "Generally, it's youngsters only who listen to your songs, for the singers that's a huge market and an opportunity to increase your popularity." Needless to say, for the known names in the industry it's a barometer of popularity, for others a platform for publicity.

HI-FLIER: Amrinder Gill

The annual festival by Panjab University Campus Students' Council has periodically seen its share of flips and flops. The tradition of star night continues. Not just singers, performers from a spectrum of entertainment industry concur. DJ Sweet, resident DJ, Black Magic, counts Delhi University campus among his favourites.

"I really like playing at Lady Sri Ram College. The crowd there has so much of energy that they just dance. And obviously if you are playing well, you get compliments in the end," he winks.

Like daughter like mother

It looks like item girl Rakhi Sawant's mother Jaya is following her daughter's footsteps. Two-reality shows old, Jaya Sawant has always dreamt of making it big on the silver screen! She wanted to become an actress and had even signed a Gujarati movie 25 years ago but could not go ahead with it because of the disapproval of her husband and family. Buzz is that her being on Sony's reality show Maa Exchange, she has gained confidence. We hear Sawant not only kept asking the production guys for extra dialogues but also began showing some attitude.

Raghu loves Rajasthani music

The judge, host and actor will now turn singer and will soon be heard singing the famous Kesariya Maand song in an album. Iqbal Khan a perfectionist

Rumors of Zee TV's Sanjog Se Bani Sangini being under the scanner is looming large but the lead actors, Iqbal Khan and Binny Sharma, are fighting tooth and nail to put up a good show and fight for its survival. Actors, traditionally, do not interfere with the storyline or creative duties but Iqbal Khan has actively involved himself with every facet of the plot, ever since the inception of the show.

An Indya source said, “Few days ago, while reading his dialogues and script, he realised that there was no link between the two scenes written for him. According to the screenplay, Rudra had to romance Gauri amidst high-voltage drama, which involved Rudra trying to reclaim his sister's lost jewellery and the inclusion of romance here was completely off track as per Iqbal. First, Iqbal tried to explain his discomfort in doing the scene to the creative team but when his pleas fell on deaf ears, he stormed off the sets. Knowing Iqbal's conviction and passion towards the story, the producer requested him to return on the sets and also altered the script."

We spoke to Iqbal Khan aka Rudra who confirmed, “I have been essaying the character Rudra and know my role in and out. If there is something, I feel will not work, then I refuse to act against my convictions. It is not necessary to add a scene that will not go with the rest of the track and we don't have to follow the script religiously if not convinced. As actors, we all have the right to give our inputs as no one wants to look foolish on screen. We all work hard to put up a good show and not just dish out anything to our viewers. Sangini and the role of Rudra-both are very dear to me.

Sara runs away from hospital

On the run: Sara Khan

Sara Khan is a happy camper at home. Though she was very ill, had acute stomach pain and even operated for kidney stones, she claims her producer Rajita Sharma of Zee TV’s Preet Se Bandhi Ye Dori Ram Milaayi Jodi and her team, has been a huge support in this trying time.

A smiling Sara narrates, “I am feeling very well now and recuperating at home. I have to say my production house has taken excellent care of me. They have been sweet and understanding in this demanding television world. My producer Rajitaji has been in touch with me ever since I was operated upon and calls me every hour to check up on me. For the serial, I have been giving close up shots from my home but day after tomorrow I should be able to shoot for few hours.”

That is not all the crew members are very friendly with Sara and even stayed with her during this tough time. And she loved it as she says, "Every night someone or the other from the production company stays with me to take care of me. I feel really lucky to have such a great support.”

Sara was diagnosed with kidney stones and operated upon for the same on 23 March but didn't stay in the hospital for long. “I hate hospitals as they make me sick. I end up feeling worse, so I ran away from the hospital a day after my operation! I didn't even stay overnight the day I was diagnosed for the first time. Instead, I took painkillers and went to the success party of Ram Milaye Jodi. It was better than staying at the hospital. I always feel better recuperating at home.”

Though her relations with her family may not be at an all time high, her new group of friends bring a smile to her face. — HRM

A Royal Sojourn!

BIKER BOYS: (L-R) Vivekananda and Vaibhav Nijhowne

Tring, king ......tring -tring !! It is early morning, Sunday. A cheery, familiar voice asks "Ready for a bike ride? "When?" Like now!" I groan. Then I get it! BIKE RIDE!! Sure. My Royal Enfield T'Bird 500 has been standing neglected in the driveway for the last 2 weeks. I'm wide-awake. Jump out of bed. Slap water on my face. Forget the stubble. Brush teeth. Slip into tee, jeans, boots. Lace up. Gulp down a cuppa! Stuff a toast and egg down my mouth. Run down the steps. Tear off the tarpaulin. Kick the engine to life.

The gang arrives, all on Royal Enfield 500s. "Where are we going?" Does it matter? It is the journey not the destination. What does a biker dream of? Little or no traffic. Not much else. Yes, a beer at the destination! Almost forgot that! Morni. Tikar Tal. We roar off. In next to no time we're in biking Nirvana. Near empty, tight, twisting mountain roads. The thumping roar of the RE 500s..their engines echoing in the mountains. We're not ordinary mortals. The bikes lean into each curve. Throttles are pulled to increase rpm, while we accelerate up steeply inclined turns. The foot pegs are scraping the tarmac, sparks flying. Horns blaring around blind curves! Heaven! Blessed Heaven!! Clear blue skies….the scent of lush, fresh green foliage in our nostrils. The exotic scenery flashing by in a blur! Cares are forgotten. To-do lists, left behind! Burdens, banished! The mind encompasses the moment. Each second, stretched to maximise the magic. The experience transforms the mind. It is a stage of heightened awareness. Did I mention Nirvana?

We stop for a well-earned 'chai' break at Morni. Back to the bikes. Onward to Tikar Tal. The road winds up a little way further and then the fun begins when it starts to drop precariously. This part really separates the men from the boys! Fortunately, we manage to stay in the latter category! Finally we reach Tikar Tal. The Haryana Tourism facility is a welcome sight, for our tummies are empty. We get off our bikes and order the 'appropriate' beverages and food. The lake stretches into the distance, framed in a backdrop of mountains. A prescription for peace, for contentment! An hour later, fully 'tanked', we're ready for the ride back home. Great! We're only half way through the fun! It's great to be young. Thank God I'm not old. Just 65!!

(Vivekananda Nijhowne is a passionate biker and shares his journey to Tikar Tal)

Make the party SPECIAL!
Purnima Gupta

With the advent of destination parties, a marriage ceremony on the moon is not far away! At least going by the trend, which is steadily gaining ground amid the elite of Ludhiana, one can safely presume this.

Shares Suman Nanda, a local, "It was my parent's golden marriage anniversary and we wanted the occasion to be special. Keeping this in mind a grand reception was planned at Tarika Resorts near Shimla, which comprised a two-night stay for all the 50 guests. My parents renewed their vows in front of their children, grandchildren and friends, which was wonderful."

One of the city residents recalls the wedding of her daughter at Jaypee Resorts, Agra. "The bridegroom's family were from Delhi. It was like a family affair of 400 people. The three-night stay has given me some lifelong memories." Kavita, another local, can't stop her excitement while recalling her brother's wedding at Fort Aguada, Goa, "It was an awesome experience. There were 300 people staying at the resort for two nights and enjoying the celebrations."

Sakshi Arora, Ludhiana resident, recalls the welcome ceremony hosted by her family for their newborn baby at Jungle Retreat near Shimla last year, which included a two-night stay. "It was an awesome experience. The hosts treated us very well."

Going places
Bollywood has gone global. Producers spend crores of rupees on exotic locales and production values for their films. Take a look at the fancy locations you will see in movies coming up this year.

Agent Vinod: Saif Ali Khan’s production is the first Indian film to be shot extensively in the ancient cities of Morocco in Africa. The movie has been shot in far-fetched Eastern European countries such as Latvia and Estonia. Watching the movies simply
for the locales and the action sequences should be worth it!

Rock Star

Farhan Akhtar and SRK’s second outing with the iconic character is set in Malaysia, yet again. To add to the excitement, large portions of the film have Germany as their set.

We do not know how the movie will be but the production values are lush and slick! There are exotic islands and the land of Turkey looks beautiful in the promos. We are looking forward to seeing the portions shot in Turkey

Imtiaz Ali’s highly-anticipated musical starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri exploits the beauty of the Czech Republic as it has been shot in Prague. In India, it is one of the few films to have shot on location in Kashmir and from what we hear the crew and cast had a fabulous time there. Portions of the film are also set in Delhi University

Mausam: The film is set in Kashmir but not shot over there. It has been shot in Scotland, instead and that place has been portrayed as Kashmir. Apart from that, certain scenes and songs have been shot in Bangalore and Chandigarh.

Players: Abbas Mustan’s remake of The Italian Job has been shot in New Zealand, Goa, and Russia. It is the first Indian film to be shot at the North Pole. To add to the eye-candy, there is a Russian actor as well!

Short Term Shaadi: The Imran Khan-Kareena Kapoor film directed by newcomer Shakun Batra has been shot in casino haven, Las Vegas and the characters plays NRIs. Seems like fun!

Kat is unhappy

Madhuri Dixit has worked with Amitabh Bachchan, SRK, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. Her only regret is that she did not get a chance to work with Hrithik Roshan. She adores him and has described him as ‘poetry in motion’. They would make a nice pair

Vidya Balan has two back-to-back releases in which she has done cameos. In Dum Maaro Dum, she is Abhishek Bachchan’s wife and in Thank You, she is Akshay Kumar’s wife.

Rumour has it that Katrina Kaif is mighty upset with voluptuous newcomer Sonakshi Sinha. The newbie is going around town ‘replacing’ Katrina in brand endorsements. The truth is that either Katrina did not endorse those brands or her contract was over. Kat is not happy with stories about the same.

Preity’s style mantra

Preity Zinta is in the news again, not for films, but for her television show and the upcoming IPL season. She is in good shape and has started looking even better these days! The pahadi beauty is always well turned-out and her sense of style is chic, feminine, and simple. She talks to us about her shopping habits.

Fashion: Whatever is comfortable means fashion to me. It’s a mix of designer wear and street shopping. One should understand that he/she should be comfortable, as well as the dress should look good on them. Don’t go according to the trends, but make your own trends. I always wear what suits me and clothes that I feel comfortable in.

Shopping: I am a shopaholic, but mostly I buy clothes from abroad when I am on a holiday, because I don’t get time in Mumbai to go and check out stores. When I am in Delhi, there is a store called One More at the DLF Emporiu Mall and I pick up clothes from there. I love Mumbai’s street shopping.

Quick or slow?

I am a quick shopper. If I like something, I try it and I am done. I don’t waste much time on checking out the variety in the shop. And sometimes, I know what I want, so it is completed even quicker!

Indian designers

Surily Goel is my favorite when it comes to western outfits, then Gauri-Nainika, as I love their international designs. When it comes to Indian clothes, no one can beat Manish Malhotra.

Beat it

Song: Do dill mil rahe hain

Singer: Kumar Sanu (Pardes)

Genre: Popular music

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHe62WV9vc4

This is going to be my all time favourite song for various reasons. This is a Kumar Sanu number, and one of his best treat to the music industry. The song is soothing and touching to the core. Unlike the present day Bollywood numbers that are all about a kicchdi of instruments, Dol dil….has a depth in words and light music to it. Every word from the track is meaningful. As a music lover, you can enjoy a track more if you can understand the words and relate to them at the same time. This song does just that and lots more. More so, this is one of the best romantic songs I have ever heard. Must listen, if you have missed it.
