Water crisis looms large in Mohali, too

In the coming week, major repair works at the Bhakra Canal will quite literally leave Mohali waterless. Against the demand for 23 million gallons per day (MGD), Mohali will receive around 8 MGD of water, including 5.2 MGD from tube wells.

Even as cricket is the most sought after game in India, the country lacks in a specialised medical help, guidance, a system for injury surveillance, pre-season screening or the computerised documentation for injuries as is available in the developed countries.

Encroachment by hotel removed
Chandigarh, April 2
A UT estate office team, in an anti-encroachment drive, today removed fencing and a gate, which Hotel Shivalikview, being run by the the Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO), had erected on plot number 16, adjoining it, at Sector 17 here. The team, led by superintendent Ravinder Sharma, reached the hotel along with a heavy police posse around 9 am. The hotel staff alleged that the team did not show them any order in connection with the demolition and started removing the fencing and the gate.

14 illegal dhabas removed

The enforcement department of the municipal corporation (MC) remove 14 illegal dhabas at the market in Sector 26 here yesterday.

Collector rate up by 40 pc
Mohali, April 2
The Mohali administration has increased the collector rate for residential, commercial and institutional property by about 40 per cent with effect from April 1. The rate is a benchmark to assess the value of a property to be registered. This means the registration of property in the district has become a expensive proposition now.

The police arrested the driver of an auto-rickshaw on the charges of outraging the modesty of a girl last night. The accused was identified as Sunny, a resident of Maloya village.

1 held for unnatural offence

The police have arrested a resident of Hallomajra for killing a dog after having unnatural sex with it on Thursday night.

One held for sodomising 10-year-old
Zirakpur, April 2
The police today arrested Sukwinder Singh, alias Reetha, a resident of Dhanas, Chandigarh, on the charges of sodomising a 10-year-old boy of Chhat village on March 26. However, the two others are still absconding.

Lahiri triumphs on Panchkula greens

Anirban Lahiri has done it again. This 23-year-old Bangalore lad fired four birdie pairs after a bad start to clinch the Aircel PGTI Players Championship on the par-72 greens of the Panchkula Golf Club here today. He carded a five under 67 on Saturday for a 14 under 274 total. Seasoned Mukesh Kumar finished two strokes behind at 276 returning a four under 68 on the last day.
