Land acquisition
Bathinda, March 24 The union leaders alleged that the Master Plan had been prepared to acquire about 55,000 hectares of these 41 villages. On the other hand, the administration has been denying it, saying the land would not be acquired. Farmer leaders present on the occasion included district president of the BKU (Ugrahan) Shingara Singh Mann, state vice-president of the BKU (Sidhupur) Hardev Singh Jai Singh Wala, district general secretary of the BKU (Dakonda) Raj Mohinder Singh Kotbhara, district president of the Zamhoori Kisan Sabha Sukhdev Singh Nathana and state committee member of the Dehati Mazdoor Sabha Mahipal. Speaking on the behalf of all the leaders, Shingara Singh Mann said due to the Master Plan, there was unrest among the residents of 41 villages as they feared that their land would be acquired by the government. The villagers had formed village-level ‘Zamin Bachao Committees’ in the villages and they were now going to hold a ‘Zamin Bachao Conference’ on March 26 in Pucca Kalan village (Sangat block), he added. Mann said people in these 41 villages had already passed resolutions that they would not allow the government to acquire their land at any cost. He said at the March 26 conference, an announcement would be made that their agitation would continue till the Master Plan was scrapped by the government. He said though the administration and the government claimed that their land would not be acquired but people were not ready to believe this. According to Mann, on the pretext of setting up industries in the area, the government was actually going to snatch their land. He also said these unions had extended full support to the people of 41 villages to protect their land. The leaders also said with regard to acquiring the land of the farmers, the policies of the SAD-BJP government and the Congress were same and ‘anti-farmer’.
They said even former Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal was silent on the issue. |

Jat stir hits power plants, Rlys
Bathinda, March 24 As many as 45 trains touching various places in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan have been cancelled and 32 short terminated. Several other trains have been diverted through other routes. The train to Bikaner that every day carries a large number of cancer patients from here was running uninterrupted. Coal supply to the two major thermal power projects here has been disrupted due to the ongoing agitation of Jats who were squatting on the rail lines in the neighbouring states and also the tussle between the coal mafia in Bihar and Chhattisgarh on the issue of control over the coal mines. The coal supply to these plants comes from Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa and Chhattisgarh. Two of the three thermal power plants of the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) are located in the Bathinda district. The disruption in coal supply has put the thermal power plants in an emergency mode even as consumption of electricity was increasing every passing day with the soaring mercury. A PSPCL spokesman said two rakes each containing about 58 carriage bogies of coal reached the Lehra Mohabbat plant this morning as the train was diverted through some other route. The plant consumes about four trainloads of coal (12,586 tons) every day and was left with coal stock for only 17 days. Not a single coal rake has reached the 440 MW Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant (GNTP) here during the past seven days. The plant consumes about 7000 tons of coal every day and stock for 26 days was available here. The Punjab Mail that runs between Ferozepur and Mumbai via Bathinda has been diverted through Ludhiana. Raj Sadosh adds from Abohar: The pilgrimage to Nanded Sahib has also been affected due to the ongoing Jat reservation stir. The weekly train, 12485/12486 Nanded Sahib- Sriganganagar has been cancelled. The train had hundred per cent reservation till the end of next month, sources said. The railways officials have explained that the train had been terminated at Jind. The 14526/14525 Ambala-Sriganganagar Intercity Express train has also been cancelled. Thousands of commuters have been using this train for onward journey to several states including UP besides the holy town of Haridwar since the beginning of the Jat agitation. The trains that connected Sriganganagar to New Delhi and Howrah had already been cancelled. Thousands of migrants from UP, Bihar and Orissa missed Holi celebrations this time. Pal Sabha, the leading NGO of the UP migrants, resolved to keep Holi celebrations at low profile and hundreds of its members used dry colour powder only for symbolic celebrations. Sources in the railways indicated that refund running into lakhs had to be made. The private bus operators have increased the fare for Delhi by Rs 50 lamenting that risk was involved besides covering additional mileage while taking up alternate routes. |

Sriganganagar, March 24 Their accomplice Sukhbir Singh Sukha of Kartarpur (Jalandhar) has been admitted with injuries in his right shoulder. As per the information available, a case had been recently registered against Sukhbir, a proclaimed offender, for looting a car near Chandi Mandir cantonment area while the other two were eluding arrest in half a dozen robberies committed allegedly in different parts of Punjab and Haryana. Jagmeet favours SC CM if Cong returns to power
Mansa, March 24 Brar, who was addressing a largely attended rally here, said the choice of Chief Minister should not be confined from among the PPCC Chief Captain Amrinder Singh or the CLP leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal. The Congress president Sonia Gandhi does not stick to the line that a Scheduled Caste Congress loyalist cannot become the chief minister of Punjab, Brar said. Interestingly, none of the Amarinder loyalist Congress legislators of the Mansa district participated in the rally held by Jagmeet Brar, who said he was satisfied with the participation of the grass-root party activists. “We cannot continue to be slaves of the British legacy by following the corporate culture and feudalism,” Brar said and accused Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal of perpetuating dynastic rule in the state. |

He said under the Act, a board, comprising retired judges and members of the Bar Council, would be constituted, which was not acceptable to them.
