Green day at Kansal
The weather is turning bright and sunny, and what better time to roll up mats, don a Cuban hat, fill a basket full of eatables, catch hold of a frisbee and head to the green zones surrounding our city. Our recommendation is a day's trip to the Kansal forest. Next to the lake, this small sanctuary offers a quiet world full of natural flora and fauna. Secure a pass from office of the Chief Wildlife Warden, Chandigarh, Old Architect Building, Sector -19, Madhya Marg, Chandigarh (these are offered on a first-come-first-served basis). The pass ensures your entry to this unspoiled haven offering a variety of herbs, shrubs, climbers and trees. A stray peacock might cross your path. Bird watchers can identify species of other feathered friends. Butterflies, reptiles, and who knows you might encounter a sambhar! The hill slopes with catchments offer interesting paths for trekkers. Small water bodies nestled among slopes are a treat for eye. What we loved? Lying down on the back and gazing in to Do's and don'ts l
Wear bright colours l Carry cooked eatables and ample water l Don't honk/play music l Keep a watch on children l Not a nature lover? Don't worry. Here are some more events that are on in the city on Saturday. Window to the northeast

Road (ies) less travelled
Here it is. Please give a breather to your grey cells, let the imagination take baby steps, put away all those permutations combinations crawling over you and follow one advice - shut up. 'Roadies' stands for something, so, stop judging or applying your statistics and logistics! Raghu and Rajiv, the men behind the longest running reality show Roadies, want you to relax and watch, and if you don't like it feel free to bang your head! Just kidding. You don't have to take everything literally. In the city to screen an episode of Roadies at Kawa, Sector-26, the twins come with no 'extra additives' tag. Here is why… Hello! We haven't arrived; we've been working in this industry for 16 years: It is a different thing that people know us only for Roadies, but we have been working in this industry for almost 16 years now. 'Roadies' has given us a celebrity status, however, we see ourselves as hardcore professionals who are just doing a job. We created 'Roadies' and now the kid has grown up, with a personality of its own. People see Roadies as a personality test: Roadies is a case of each to his own. Everybody has a different take on it. For some it is a personality test, while others think that the two of us have made this show to trash people. What they do not see is that it is a reality show that has various stages; casting the contestants is one of them. You only hear us shout, not what goes behind it: It's been a long journey for 'Roadies'; auditions for it is a happening thing. You just see us shout, what audiences tend to miss is the thought process behind it. We try to pull out the patterns in their behaviour; sometimes we react strongly to a point, at other moments we are open about whatever the contestant has to say. We are no masters of psychology, but we are not bad at it either: Their can be overriding similarities and differences between people; we don't meet people with preconceived notions. We do not see ourselves as masters of psychology because if we do so, we might end up making a wrong judgment. At the same time, experiences have taught us to recognise basic attributes of an individual in a single glance. We used to sit in our balcony and observe people moving up and down: Before 'Roadies'; before people made us celebrities, we would sit in the balcony and observe people for entertainment purpose. You bet, it requires attention to detail and now we have come somewhat closer to recognising attributes of a character. Roadies doesn't influence youth, youth influences 'Roadies': Youngsters have grown, they have a mind of their own. We know of oldies who love this show and youngsters who don't have any problem with the language. Give us a break! My son loves this show-Rajiv: My son likes the show. Once though our dad told Raghu that he shouldn't use abusive language on the show because he doesn't like when people say nasty things about his sons. I haven't taken an off in 16 years-Rajiv: Those of you who don't know, the 10-minutes-elder brother Rajiv is the brain behind the show Master Chef India. I have been working all these years. My wife often asks me would I ever come back home from work. I can't sleep; I find myself blogging, writing scripts the whole night and heading straight to work thereafter. jasmine@tribunemail.com |
Variety adds spice
Food. This is one topic that can be endlessly discussed and talked about. For a global gourmand who travels as much on his feet as on the stomach, a variety of cuisines have become of utmost importance when dining out. For our city folks who have a penchant for eating out, restaurants mean a place where they can relax, eat and have a wonderful time. Considering the same, we pick Hotel Western Court in Panchkula this week and ask two families to tell us about their experience of eating out at this restaurant. Known for their variety, the Hotel Western Court serves Indian, Continental, Chinese and few items of Thai cuisine. With an expansive menu that includes a variety of starters, soups, items of main course and desserts, it's also the amiable ambience that draws in the crowd. Food quotient
For Vinay and Reema Dheer, along with their children Shivanshi and Shivam, Hotel Western Court is the place for food as well as the ambience. "This is our second visit to the restaurant and it's their quick service as well as great food quality that got us back to the restaurant." Rapid fire
How often do you eat out: Three-to- four times in a week. The best thing you like about the restaurant: Their food is value for money. How about service: It couldn't be better. Ambience: Despite the rush, it's always calm and quiet. What did you order: A complete Indian meal - dal, tandoori roti, paneer, papad and salad. Price: It's ok. What to eat: Their paneer items are really good. Family time For Rohit, Puneet, Munish, baby Vivan, Madhu, Nirmala and Sudesh Sharma, the first visit to Hotel Western Court has been impressive. While it's the ambience that they've liked the most they say, "The Hotel is a pleasant change from the cluttered eating joints in the city. The open space and a composed environment is the USP of the restaurant." Rapid fire How often do you eat out: Once or twice in a week. The best thing you like about the restaurant: The ambience. How about service: It's good. Ambience: That's the best thing in this restaurant. What did you order: Sizzler, dal makhani, kadai panner, roti and chawal. Price: Food is good so price does not matter. What to eat: Their kadai paneer is amazing. |

A new study claims that the average woman will kiss 22 men, have four long-term relationships and get her heart broken five times before meeting "the one". The path to true love will also see her endure six bad dates, have six one-night stands and be cheated on four times before finding her perfect match. The average man will make slightly more of his single days, kissing 23 girls and having 10 one-night stands before getting round to settling down. But he will also have his heart broken six times, according to the survey of 2,000 people. Spokesman Dean Adams said: "We all know how hard it can be to find the right one but seeing it added up like this makes for terrifying reading." The survey found that the average woman would have her first boyfriend at 15, and date nine men before settling down. She will be dumped four times and will break up with someone five times. But when they find their perfect match, women know within the first four weeks. — ANI |
Wild ,wet... Holi
Just like life, there are many hues to the festival of Holi when it comes to exploring just how much fun you can treasure from this day. From getting down and dirty pushing friends into a mud ditch to a safer 'tikka' on the forehead, there are many ways of celebrating colours on Holi. mona@tribunemail.com Dirty Holi
Dirty Holi may give many of us ideas for unabashed fun, as there is something unearthly about smearing friends all over with mud. A tradition of sorts followed in all colleges from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, "mud slinging" is probably enjoyed only on this day of colours. Chemistry of colours
If dirty Holi is what you are aiming at, hail to your armoury. Number one on the list, eggs. Fresh or stale (eek), eggs are better than any pichkari available in stores. Closely followed by rotten tomatoes. The sound and squish when thrown is something that only tomatoes offer. Paint, varnish, grease, muck, permanent markers, there is a whole range to choose from. Topless Holi
Don't get any wrong ideas as we are talking hatke, yes how about a kutra faad Holi? One that a B Tech student Kunal Khanna swears by, "When I was in Delhi, we made most of this Bihari tradition. Dressed in old shirts or kurtas, we would play with strangers on the road. Along with colours, we would tear off each other's shirts. Being one of the bunch of coloured, topless guys is amazing fun," says Kunal. And mind you along with colours, eggs are a must in this Holi that's how they do it in Bihar. Cosmetologist speak
Playing Holi with synthetic colours may result in allergies. Sometimes chemicals mixed with diluted hydrochloric acid result in permanent pigmentation. While normal allergies can be treated with medicine, for the later its laser treatment required. Dr Vikram Kamboj, Cosmetologist, Blossom Cosmetic Laser Clinic, Chandigarh |
What happened with me last Holi "I enjoyed the festival of colours until last year. I was at my sister's in-laws to celebrate her first Holi. My sister's elder brother-in-law touched me at odd places. On the face of it he was just applying colour. I was left ashamed, embarrassed and infuriated. I kept mum because I did not want to spoil the day for my sister. But I couldn't forget or forgive either. - Abha, a nurse. Here are steps to ensure a 'no hanky-panky' Holi Play with a known close group If someone from the family does it, don't keep mum Shout, scream, kick - do whatever is in your capacity to draw attention A handful of colours in the miscreant's eye would be a befitting reply Take your family into confidence and bring the guilty to book Call number 100 to enlist police support Green Holi
The all-pervasive trend today is to 'Go Green'. Organic Holi is pure fun. Make your own colours by mixing turmeric (haldi) and gram flour with flour for yellow. Henna gives you green. Tesu flowers when boiled and cooled in water give a natural yellow. If magenta is the colour you are looking for, boil beetroot in water. Sandalwood powder can work as gulal and is extremely beneficial for the skin. Peels of pomegranate boiled in water give red as well so do rose petals. Try saffron (kesar) for orange. Though expensive, it's extremely good for the skin! |

From all Yashraj's serials on Sony TV last year, Mahi Way was the only one that garnered decent TRPs. And now it is heard that Mahi Way 2 is on the way. The heroine of the show Pushtiie Shakti, aka Mahi, was endearing as she played a fat but intelligent girl with ambitions of a cool job and hot guy. Now sources say that Pushtiie will be back on the show, in the same fat avatar. She was told to retain her weight and not lose it. If you ask why, the answer is simple--the character needs to be overweight. Buzz is that Pushtiie is under a three-year contract with the show’s producer paying her a fat sum to stay plump for the show’s second season. A talented actor and it was her weight that got her the role in the first place. Of course keeping with the plot, they wouldn't want her to turn slim and trim. Nude scenes awkward for Amanda Hollywood actress Amanda Seyfried feels more comfortable with her body now, but still finds it awkward watching her own nude scenes. The Mamma Mia! star has gradually grown comfortable with showing off her body on screen but admitted she still struggles to compose herself if she has to re-watch raunchy footage of herself. "It's fun to finally feel sexy. I mean, I've been disconnected with the sexual side of me. And I am working through that, and finding that side of me. "I usually cover my eyes when I'm doing something questionable! So it's really awkward for me. I can never really wrap my head around how I'm supposed to behave or how I'm supposed to feel," said Seyfried. The 25-year-old star also admitted she loves playing feisty, fearless characters, which is what attracted her to playing Valerie in the new updated version of classic fairytale Red Riding Hood. "I think the first direction I had for Valerie, I separated from the usual damsel in distress. She's this young, strong female going through her life, and realising her sexuality and trying to navigate herself through her life.--Agencies |

Emma Watson, who is the new face of Lancome, was recently spotted kissing French co-star Cyril Descours as they filmed romantic scenes for the cosmetics brand in Paris. Wearing a strapless peach chiffon dress, black biker jacket and towering peep-toed shoe boots, the actress shot flirty scenes on Ile Saint-Louis - an island in the middle of the River Seine. Perhaps testing out one of Lancôme's kiss-proof lipsticks, the young star smooched Descours in front of the cameras during the late night shoot. Watson follows in the footsteps of screen stars including Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz and Isabella Rossellini, all of whom have fronted advertising campaigns for the French beauty brand in the past. It is unclear whether the campaign was for the brand's make-up or perfume, but with a huge legion of fans it is bound to fly off the shelves when released. Last Friday she first tweeted: "A new venture is starting - what can it be? Follow my clues and you will see..." This was followed with: "I'll pierce your skin if you hold me wrong but I'll love you forever if you pass me on," which referred to Lancome's logo - a rose. — ANI |
