‘Punish ’84 riot perpetrators’
Our Correspondent

Ambala, March 16
Tarsem Singh Morawali, president, Sikh International Dhadi Jatha, on Monday reiterated that Operation Bluestar had left a permanent scar on the psyche of the Sikhs and had deeply hurt their religious sentiments. Talking to mediapersons at Gurdwara Manji Sahib in Ambala City on Monday, he said the Sikhs had not forgiven the Congress for initiating the operation at the Golden Temple. “The Sikhs will never forgive those responsible for it. However, we do not want to pass it down to the next generation.”

Morawali said the accused of the 1984 riots had not been brought to book so far, which had caused great discontent among the Sikhs.

He said the Union Government should not adopt double standard in such matters. Referring to the killing of innocent Sikhs in Hond Chillar during the riots, he said it was a serious matter and the accused should be punished at any cost. The Sikhs had always paid huge regard to other religions and never hurt the sentiments of any community, he added. Morawali was here to perform kirtan to mark the death anniversary of Baba Phoola Singh. The Anti-Terrorist Front India had threatened to show black flags to him in protest against his pro-Bhindranwala stance. A posse of police was deployed outside the gurdwara as a precautionary measure. The front activists, however, submitted a memorandum to the SHO, Ambala City, in which they demanded action against Morawali for his latest CD.

No prizes for third position!
PU decision leaves winners dejected
Deepankar Sharda

Chandigarh March 16
When it comes to “rules” at Panjab University, Chandigarh, the institution has its own criteria to amend or introduced any regulation on the campus. The sports department had organised an annual prize distribution function on PU campus here today. Those players who brought laurels to the university were awarded with tracksuits and university colours.

Those players who secured top positions in inter-university, national or international-level tournaments were awarded. And those players who secured only first and second positions in the inter-college tournaments were given prizes.

The third position holder in these tournaments were left out by the officials, as according to them, there is no such rule to award the third position holders.

Six teams of the campus, including football, rowing, table tennis and yoga (all men’s), power lifting and swimming (both women’s) got third position in the inter-college tournament.

It seems that PU sports committee, which according to the Vice-Chancellor RC Sobti, had nothing to do with him, has never felt that the team or players work hard to get any position in the tournament and players deserve the same or small appreciation than what the top two position holders get.

According to the officials, there are several players or teams securing third place in the inter-college tournaments that the budget didn’t allow them to felicitate all of them and above all it is the rule that only top two teams will be awarded with the awards.

“The department, even the university have their own policies and rules. If they don’t refer the third place in the top positions then why the matches for third place are being held in every discipline. It is not about a tracksuit or a medal, but it feels good to get honoured,” said a player.

The officials, when asked if there is any policy of not including the third position holders in the prize list category, they moved the matter into consideration. However, the event was finished at its respective time, putting an end to all the hopes.
