ASI Recruitment Case
Chandigarh, March 8 Admitting a bunch of petitions, the Bench headed by Justice MM Kumar had earlier stayed the order, which meant the Home Secretary was not required to hold an inquiry into the matter. The Chandigarh Police had nullified the recruitments, carried out in 2008, after a series of reports were carried in newspapers. Some selected candidates had then moved the CAT, which had ordered the Chandigarh Police to separate the tainted selected candidates from the non-tainted ones. As a matter of transparency and propriety, the administration had decided not to hold the examination. Aggrieved over the CAT directions, the administration had moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Two constables of the Chandigarh Police - Shamsher Singh and Amardeep Singh - were arrested on the allegations of facilitating paper leak and paying Rs 10 lakh to the prime accused, Joginder Dahiya, to get the solved question paper. |

Cantonment Board to decide on providing basic amenities
Chandigarh, March 8 The directions by the Division Bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Augustine George Masih came during the hearing of a petition filed in public interest for making available basic amenities in the vicinity. Taking up the petition filed by Shailender Khanna of The Mall in Ambala Cantt against the GOC-in-C, Western Command, Chandimandir, the Bench observed: “This PIL has been filed seeking directions to the respondents to provide basic facilities/amenities to residents of Ambala, who are residing close to the cantonment. “We have noticed that the petitioner had addressed two representations dated September 3, 2010, and October 3, 2010, to the chief executive officer, Cantonment Board, Ambala Cantt. No orders on the representations have been passed,” the Bench observed. Making it clear that the issuance of notice to the other side was not required under the facts and circumstance of the case and due to the nature of the relief sought, the Bench added: “On due consideration, we are of the view that instead of entertaining this PIL, it will be appropriate to direct the chief executive officer, Cantonment Board, Ambala Cantt, to dispose of the representations by means of a speaking order. The PIL is disposed of in these terms with liberty to the petitioner to approach this Court once again, if he continues to feel aggrieved. |

The court today, while declining the prayer of schools to vacate the stay, adjourned the case to April 1.
