Agitating technocrats clash with police
Jammu, March 6 The protesters were going towards the official residence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah this afternoon to submit a memorandum containing their demands to him. The police stopped the agitators at the Mubarak Mandi complex from moving further, resulting in the clash. Farmers await relief for loss of crops
RS Pura (Jammu), March 6 Although more than five months have passed since the hailstorm damaged more than 50 per cent of the wheat crop in 34 villages in Bishnah and 134 villages in RS Pura, officials of the departments concerned took no steps to provide the compensation. “Though the growing wheat crop is also getting damaged by yellow rust, the government has not yet provided us compensation for last year’s losses. If we do not get any compensation soon, we will be unable to survive,” said Harjinder Singh, a farmer of Sai Kalan village. “Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the Minister of Revenue and Relief Raman Bhalla have inspected the affected areas and have given us assurances a number of times, but no step has been taken for our betterment. The state government is just making false promises,” he added. However, sources in the Revenue Department said they had prepared a list of the affected farmers and the compensation would be given soon. “The losses vary, which has delayed the process of the distribution of the compensation,” Bhalla said. “I assure that by the end of the next month, a compensation of Rs 10 crore would be given to all affected farmers of the region,” he added. |
Discrimination in allocation of funds
Jammu, March 6 For the first time, all the Opposition parties, including the PDP and the BJP, have decided to unitedly “fight for the common,” issue. “The smooth functioning of the Assembly will depend upon the response of the government to the Opposition’s demand for the constitution of a House committee to look into the functioning of the Health, Education and Planning Departments,” PDP Deputy Leader in the Legislative Assembly AR Veeri told The Tribune. He said the Opposition was unanimous on the issue. The parties had asked their members to reach the Central Hall of the Assembly at 9.30 am tomorrow to prepare the future course of action. “We will announce our strategy on Monday morning,” Veeri said. Sources in the PDP said the party had decided to effectively take up the issue in and outside the House.”A group in the party mooted the idea of boycotting the entire session on the issue, but no decision was taken,” sources said. Panthers Party leader Harsh Dev Singh said that the misappropriation and discrimination in the allocation of funds had become a big issue because the members of all the Opposition parties were affected due to “biased” policies of the ruling coalition.” The looting of the public exchequer is continuing. So,we don’t want to make any compromise on this issue,” Singh said. |

Natrang stages Dogri play
Jammu, March 6 In his opening remarks, Natrang director Balwant Thakur said it was a pleasure Dogri plays and Natrang would continue to showcase great Dogri writings through its dramas. The play showcases the instinctive characteristics of womenfolk on which one tends to laugh at the first instance, but it also makes us realise their importance. It was a subtle tribute by Natrang to the spirit of ‘womanhood’ on the eve of International Women’s Day on March 8. The play opens in the house of ‘Lakshmi Devi’ where she is busy gossiping with ‘Rambha Devi’. They are soon joined by ‘Champa Devi’ who adds spice to the discussions. From then onwards, whenever anyone among the trio moves out, the remaining two start backbiting about her and caricature her life in their own fancies. However, on face, they pretend to be nice to each other and criticise the moment the person is away. But this farcical presentation takes a different turn towards the end where all three of them start thinking about the similarities between them. Through the play, Goswami has underlined the harsh reality of an individual’s nature. Sajra Qadir as ‘Rambha Devi’, Niharika Sharma as ‘Lakshmi Devi’ and Sunil Bhardwaj as ‘Champa Devi’ were impressive, in portraying their characters. |
