Wife’s Death
Kalka, March 1 Fakir Chand has sent a reminder to Health Minister, Haryana, regarding the negligence of the doctor during his emergency duty, which resulted in the death of his wife. He wrote in his complaint that on September 6, 2009, his wife Sudesh Sharma was admitted to the Sector-6, Hospital, Panchkula. On September 8, 2009, the condition of his wife started deteriorating. He called the doctor on emergency duty to check his wife, but the doctor came after the death of his wife. She could have been saved, if the doctor had attended her in time. |

7-yr-old crushed to death
Dera Bassi, March 1 According to sources, the accident occurred when this minor girl, who was going to a gurdwara after her school, was crossing the national highway near Bhankarpur village and suddenly a speeding truck hit her and she died on-the-spot. Meanwhile, area residents held a protest against the officers concerned for the failure of traffic lights at the crossing of the village. Village residents alleged that due to the non-functioning of traffic lights accidents have been on the rise here. |

Stocked stubble gutted
Morinda, March 1 The incident took place in the yard of a company that is setting up a co-generation plant at Morinda Sugar Mills. The company had stocked bio-fuel on 16 acres, four of which caught fire in the afternoon. Three fire tenders from Mohali, Ropar and the Ropar thermal plant were pressed into service. The fire raged for over four hours. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained. |

Rs 1 lakh forgery at SBI
Dera Bassi, March 1 The unidentified youth took money from Mittal to change the currency notes and fled. According to CCTV cameras installed in the bank, a youth was going towards PD Mittal and took money allegedly by making false promise of changing currency notes. Nearly 30-year-old youth, wearing a green shirt, black jacket and jeans took currency notes from Mittal and fled. Mittal, however, said an unidentified youth, who introduced himself as a bank employee, was given money for the purpose of changing currency notes, but later he was not found in the bank. Bank manager said CCTV footage and photographs were given to the police for identification. The police said the matter was being investigated. |
170 district court cases to be expedited
Chandigarh, March 1 Heated arguments amongst advocates during meeting Besides, high drama was witnessed in the courts during the visit by the administrative judge as the advocates rued over the issue of chambers to be constructed in the upcoming new district court complex in Sector 43. The advocates demanded framing of a policy and rules for allocation of chambers and opposed the sudden advancement of date for booking of these chambers. The advocates raised the issue of chambers during the meeting and heated arguments were witnessed. “We were told that April 7 was the last date for depositing the amount for booking of the chambers, however without any prior notice, we are told today that the last date of depositing the amount of Rs 4 lakhs is February 28. This is gross injustice as a lot many advocates have been left out in the process,” said advocate NK Nanda, former president District Bar Association. |

Chandigarh, March 1 HDFC Bank has also been made a party. As per the petition filed before the court, Rakesh Kumar said that a cheque-bounce case was pending before him in the court of Judicial Magistrate Hem Raj Mittal and the court had issued bailable warrants against him. He had appeared before the court and was granted bail after furnishing bail bonds of Rs 10,000 on February 25, 2011. The complaint said that a constable posted in Sector 31 police station, Rajbir Singh, came to his house in the evening and threatened him. “My client Ramesh Kumar was already on bail but despite the orders the police detained him at the police station till an undertaking was given that he would appear before the court on February 28, when a case of cheque bounce was pending against him,” said Satinder Basia, counsel for complainant. He alleged that the UT Police violated the court orders and could not have detained him once the court granted him the bail. |

Bus runs over mother, daughter
Panchkula, March 1 The deceased is identified as Bijnori (25) and her daughter Dala. Binori’s husband Dharma escaped with minor injuries in the incident. Two other children Bharat (4) and his younger brother Naresh (3) are safe. The family belonging to a slum area of Chandigarh was here to sell balloons during Shivratri fair at Saketri. It was around 7 am when the victim’s family was sleeping on the roadside, the driver of a bus belonging to a private educational institute in Mohali crushed them. Residents shifted the injured to the General Hospital where Bijnori and Dala were declared brought dead. The driver of the bus, however, managed to flee. A case of negligent driving has been registered against him, the police said. — TNS |

Jeev, Chowrasia, Bhullar tee off today
Chandigarh, March 1 This will be the Chandigarh golf icon's first appearance in a tournament on home turf after a gap of 10 years. Although Jeev is yet to fully recover from his back injury, he decided to play in the tournament as "I want to give my maximum support to the PGTI, as it is doing a fantastic job for the development of professional golf in India.” Talking about his fitness, he said: “I am feeling much better at this stage, thanks to yoga and physical therapy. I think I should be fully fit by the second week of March when I head to Sicily for the next event on the European Tour.” Jeev will be pitted against the in-from SSP Chowrasia and Gaganjeet Bhullar and a host of other players who are waiting in the wings to strike it big. Chowrasia created history of sorts when he won the Avantha Masters, his second win on the European Tour. The Avantha Masters is the biggest prize money golf tournament played on Indian soil. Another Chandigarh golfer who made headlines in this tournament was 30-year-old Sujjan Singh who finished fifth and got full playing rights on the Asian Tour. Sujjan Singh, who is currently second on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, will also be seen in action tomorrow. Twentytwo-year-old Gaganjeet Bhullar, who heads the PGTI order of merit having won two of the three tournaments he has played so far, is a sure front-runner. He has had a grand start this season becoming the first Indian to win on the Challenge Tour when he clinched the inaugural Gujarat Kensville Challenge organised by the PGA European Tour in January this year. This big-hitter from Kapurthala is all set to make it his third win. The other big names in the fray for the four-day event followed by the pro-am event on March 6 are Mukesh Kumar, Chiragh Kumar, Sujjan Singh, Himmat Singh Rai, Manav Jaini, Vijay Kumar, Shamim Khan, Mandeo Singh Pathania, Raju Ali Mollah, Shankar Das, Sanjay Kumar, Amandeep Johl, Gaurav Ghei and Harmeet Kahlon. But the challenge could come from many more who will be among the more than 120 professional golfers who will tee off for the Rs 40 lakh prize money event.
