Four unidentified youths in a white Zen car allegedly kidnapped a 25-year-old taxi driver Mandeep Singh, a resident of Barnala district, from near Government High School from Kajheri near Sector 61 today.

IT dept raids builders’ premises, seizes Rs 23 cr
Chandigarh, February 24
The search and seizure operations conducted by the income tax department’s investigation wing on 18 premises of three major builders in the city and its periphery on February 18 has yielded rich dividends for the department with the groups making a voluntary surrender of concealed income to the tune of Rs 23 crore.

Health officials face heat for urging docs to ‘bring in more patients’
Ropar, February 24
Health officials at the local Civil Hospital have put up a notice in the emergency wing notifying its doctors to bring in the maximum number of patients possible. Interestingly, the notice pasted on a wall of the building, stated the hospital had “failed to meet its target of the number of patients”.

Had directed institute, then neuro-surgery dept head to pay for negligence

The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has upheld its earlier decision directing the PGI and its then neuro-surgery department’s head, Dr VK Khosla, to pay a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for carelessness, negligence and deficiency in service to the family of a patient, Indrawati Sharma, who had died after being operated upon in 1999.

The backdoor entry to Mehfil hotel being sealed by estate officemen at Sector 17 in Chandigarh on Thursday. The UT Estate Office sealed the basement of one of the oldest hotels in the city, Mehfil, Sector 17, this morning for violations of building bylaws.The enforcement wing of the Estate Office reached the hotel premises in the morning and sealed the basement area, The English Garden, which was being used as dining hall and banquet.

The Zirakpur Municipal Council has proposed a Budget of Rs 26.60 crore for the financial year 2011-12 in which Rs 25.50 crore will be spent on various development works. However, the civic body is also planning to launch its website and Rs 1.50 lakh would be spent on it. The website address will be decided after getting an approval from the higher authorities.

Two killed on level crossing in Ambala
Ambala, February 24
Two persons died when Samar Kranti Express train hit a motorcycle at an unmanned level crossing near Dukheri railway station, 10 km from Ambala Cantonment.The deceased were identified as Nirmal Singh, a resident of Saha, and Vijay Singh, a resident of Laha village in Ambala district. Both were riding the motorcycle. Following the incident the movement of trains on the Ambala-Saharanpur route came to a halt for some time.

HC notice to schools on appeals against age cut-off date

Less than a fortnight after the Punjab & Haryana High Court set September 30, 2006, as the cutoff date for school admissions to upper KG and KG classes, four of the schools affected by the move filed at least two appeals against the fixing of “age criteria” on Thursday.

7-year RI for rape
Chandigarh : Additional District and Sessions Judge VP Sirohi today sentenced a man to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor. The police had booked Sanjay in January 2010 on the allegations of the father of the victim, who had alleged that Sanjay had abducted his daughter and repeatedly raped her.

Six held in a bid to cheat goldsmith
Chandigarh, February 24 The police arrested six persons, including five women for allegedly trying to cheat a goldsmith after selling him artificial silver ornaments at Mani Majra last night.All the six belong to the same family and hail from Gujarat. The accused include Kamla, Neeru, Meena, Rita, Manju and Ashok Kumar.
