Land Acquisition Move
Ambala, February 17 Hundreds of farmers here assembled under the leadership of Vinod Rana, a youth leader of Khuda village, and resolved to oppose the acquisition of their land by the state government. They said they had learned that HUDA was planning to acquire around 1,000 acres of agricultural land falling in Khuda, Dukheri, Salarheri, Brahman Majra, Shahpur, Sambalkha,Munglai and Buhawa villages for urban development. The villagers alleged that the move came close on the heels of the Panjokhra land acquisition proposal in the name of Modern Industrial Town (MIT), which had faced a stiff opposition from the farmers of villages in that area. The farmers announced that agriculture was a prime vocation and a source of their bread and butter. They would oppose any move to acquire their land. The farmers present at the meeting at Khuda village reposed their faith in the leadership of Rana who was vested with the power to constitute a 11-member action committee to spearhead their struggle against the acquisition. The committee members include Om Parkash Pandit, Tejpal Singh, Angat Dukheri, Naresh Rana, Surjan Singh, Gurpal Naggal, Balbir Singh, Satpal Singh, Rajesh, Ujagar Singh and Amrik Singh. Farmers of Ambala district have been protesting against rapid urbanisation, which had been taking a toll on the productive agricultural land. This was driving farmers to resort to agitational means. In a related development, Zamin Bachao Samiti of Panjokhra staged a dharna outside the office of Ambala Sub-Divisional Magistrate and later submitted a memorandum seeking information on the Haryana government’s stand on the land acquisition for the MIT and the scrapping of Section 4 notice. Balwant Singh, president of Zamin Bachao Samiti, said farmers from 13 villages of the Panjokhra area also joined the protest against the acquisition of 1,852 acres of agriculture land for setting up the township. |

Disappearance of heritage items
Chandigarh, February 17 He has been accused of selling objects, believed to be the UT’s property, to auction houses. He is the son of a modeller, the late Giani Rattan Singh, who worked closely with Le Cobusier’s team during the city’s early years. The police have also formed a special investigation team, headed by DSP (Crime) Satbir Singh and comprising inspector Amanjot Singh and Sector-3 police station SHO inspector Mahavir Singh, to probe the case. “He clearly sold items, which in most probability were the property of the administration. He was still having a large number of old drawings of important buildings like Raj Bhawan and the Secretariat in his possession. It poses a great security threat if these fall in wrong hands,” states the report by the administration. In his reply to the inquiry officer, Jaswinder Singh has claimed that the models, drawings and carvings sold by him were his personal property and some of the auctioned items were, in fact, replicas made by him. The inquiry was ordered following the auction of heritage items by the auction house Artcurial on February 16, 2010. The police will also seek an explanation from Kiran Joshi, former in charge of the heritage cell and an inventory of items in personal possession of the first Chief Architect, MN Sharma. |

World Cup
Chandigarh, February 17 “The only difference between the two sides being, the team back then were a dark horse, while the current Indian team are outright favourites,” felt Kapil’s coach DP Azad and his close friend Rakesh Jolly. “When our team left the country to participate in the tournament, nobody had ever thought that Kapil’s squad would emerge winners,” said Rakesh Jolly. “Winning the World Cup by the Indian team was like a miracle. And June 25, 1983 (the day when India won the cup) has become a red-letter day in India’s cricket history,” added the two. Going down the memory lane, 74-year-old Azad said he still remembered each and every moment of the match. “I watched the match at Chandigarh Press Club, Sector 27, with my family. We were all upbeat and convinced that our boy (Kapil) would do wonders in the match. But when India were bowled out for 183, all of us became apprehensive about the team’s win,” said Azad. Recalling the highlights of the match, including Kapil’s brilliant catch of Vivian Richards, and the subsequent win over two-time World Cup winners, the septuagenarian coach termed the moment a dream. “It is difficult to define the feeling when I saw my disciple hold the coveted trophy in his hands,” said Azad. “That day, we all friends, including many local journalists, celebrated like anything. People gathered outside my house in Sector 22 and started dancing to the beats of ‘dhol’, which went on into the midnight,” said Azad. Azad recalls that he met Kapil on the third day after his arrival in the country. “He called me up and requested me to reach his Sector-16 residence. Kapil was very humble, as he personally attended all visitors,” said the coach. Kapil’s close friend Rakesh Jolly, also a former Ranji player, said the former skipper threw a lavish party for his friends in Delhi the very next day of his arrival in the country. “Kapil was happy taking the catch of Richards. Like everyone, he was of the view that the catch had changed the fate of the game. I then told him that it was his greatest knock of 175 not out against Zimbabwe that had laid the foundation of the win. We all just talked about the catch and the win while celebrating,” said Jolly. “Whenever someone talks about the World Cup, Kapil Dev’s name automatically surface in our minds. We are proud that we are the closest associates of the legend,” said the two, adding that like every Indian they again wished Indian team to repeat the history. |
