Cop-ing up with V-Day pressure
Jasmine SIngh

Two sides of a coin, who hasn't heard about it and who hasn't seen it? Well, if you haven't, we suggest you borrow a coin and check it out yourself! Sounds like a PJ. Okay, it is one, but that still does not dismiss the fact that a coin has two sides. On Valentine Day, we thought of highlighting the other side--the cop side.

We have shared nineteen to dozen about the gifts to gift, what not to give, whom to give and how to give. This time it is about the men who make this day a peaceful one. The Bajrang Dal and Shiv Sena, they too add to the success factor in their own way. But the real heroes are the cops. Yes, the wardi waley.

Today is the day to spare a thought for them. Spare a moment to salute these heroes who ensure that the lovers can express their love without going overboard. They sacrifice their day so that we can have fun within permissible limit. Jokes apart, these men are the real heroes. This Valentine too they are all set give us a perfect day. And how?

We are watching you

SSP Naunihal Singh has issued instructions to maintain law and order on the V-Day. Security will be provided in Sector-11,12, 9 and 10, known as the geri-route. Cops will also be stationed at various girl's colleges, hostels and Panjab University. Other than this, cops will ensure that no undue harassment will be caused to the youngsters. The cops will be stationed at these spots from eight in the morning. This is only the beginning of the Rule Book. There are more to go. No over-loaded vehicles, no pressure horns and no triple-riding. And, if you dare to step on the wrong side, they are going to be tough.

No messing around

Times have changed (do you contest this?) and so have the ways to celebrate Valentine's Day. However, roses and soft toys rule the roost. For Jaswinder Singh, SHO, Sector-17, the time has changed and so have the moral values of the youngsters. "Every second day, we have a chocolate day, or teddy day, something or the other. I doubt if these youngsters get down to the real meaning of a day."

On Valentine's Day, Jaswinder Singh is okay with everything as long as they do not break the rules. "We cannot allow youngsters to mess with the law just because it's Valentine Day," he adds. Sure sir, we agree. Law is above everything.

Law of survival

The other side of the coin as we stated in the beginning, the lovely, sincere, organised lover brigade. Come what may, they only know how to love (or how to ogle or tease). They mean no harm, they only honk their way through the city, painting it red. These are the lovely lovers who give a damn about the zulmi duniya and cops. Says Vikram Dheer, a student from PU, "Cops--they do their duty and we do ours. I feel sorry for them. They should also be allowed to enjoy on this day. All said and done, they are nice people. If you find yourself in the wrong side of law, all you have to do is smile and run for your life.

Girls go bold this Valentine

Saat Khoon Maaf on V-Day? Why not

I would love to watch Saat Khoon Maaf. It is women-centric. I would take my date along and groove to the tunes of Daarlinggg aankhon se aankhein chaar karne do."

— Neeta Nair on her date

Hair is a big No

I hate when men have too much hair on them. I like it when it is clean. Too much of it would be gross and dirty for me.

— Cheryla Bhutia on retro look for men

A romantic gateway

My room definitely. Nothing is cozier than this one. The city does have lot of parks where one could catch the lovebirds. However, Chandigarh is liberal with public display of emotions. For me, a romantic corner of my room and little music with good food would do it all for this Valentine.

— Chaaru Solanki on the most romantic corner in Chandigarh.

Mills and Boons are passé

Today girls don't live in the pages of Mills And Boons. We are romantic but also understand the practical world. We really don't have time for fantasies and fairy tales.

How big is your budget?
Ashima sehajpal

Put a full stop to all the emotional one-liners like 'I can do anything for you', 'You are my world, my life', 'Nothing matters to me more than your happiness'… and think practical. Your Valentine's Day celebrations will depend more on your budget than love. If in the excitement of being together with your beloved on this day, you had forgotten about the most important factor, these tips can help.

`100-200

We begin with the worst-case scenario for those just out-of- school-youngsters. They have no other option but to express love in some nice garden with people staring at them. Please avoid Rose Garden and Leisure Valley, for they are almost turned into forts. Since the budget is 'dangerously low', you will have no choice but to carry your own stuff for the date. If you can't carry sandwiches in your tiffin box, buy two packets of butter popcorns and go easy with them.

`300-500

What can be done in this meager amount, when a single rose costs Rs 30 on Valentine's Day? Anyway, two roses in the bunch would do the trick and save the rest for a decent treat in one of the burger joints. Sharing a soft drink would save some bucks and give you a better feel of the day. Keep aside a decent amount for the parting gift, which can be a chocolate. We would suggest gift her a recharge coupon so that you can do more mushy talk.

`600-1,000

The plan remains almost the same as of those with 300 bucks in their pocket. You can add a few more roses to the bunch. The gift can get a little better. How about going to the Sector 22 market and buying a small handbag in faux leather. You can also go on a short drive.

Up to `5,000

What not you can do with so much of money! Go to a fine-dining restaurant. Enjoy a buffet and then go for a long drive. Or, instead of a buffet, you can cut a truffle cake, while you click lots of photographs.

`5000-7000

You can't begin your day without a long drive. Don't forget to buy passes for Valentine's Day party. Celebrate the evening with a candle-light dinner in a fine-dining restaurant. You can even go to watch a nice romantic flick. Buy anything — from a perfume, one-piece dress, a nice bag, a spa coupon or a make over voucher for your beloved.

`7,000 and above

When you have so much of financial back up, you don't need any advice. However, the easiest way to please your date is take her out for shopping. Or, better still, give her your credit card for the day. Shopping takes care of everything, even if you cannot be physically there because of your work pressure.

Mom, you are a star! Madhuri's kids realise

She has mesmerised millions of Indians with her screen performances, but Madhuri Dixit's US-brought up kids realised their mother was a big Bollywood star only when they visited the sets of a dance reality show recently.

Penelope's day out with Bardem

Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem
Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem

They are one of Hollywood's most publicity shy couples but Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem stepped out together for the first time since the birth of their son three weeks ago.

The actor enjoyed her first night out since giving birth as she and husband headed for dinner at Koi Restaurant in Los Angeles.

The pair was all smiles as they snuggled up in the back seat of the car taking them home. Earlier, this week Spanish actor Bardem, 41, spoke about his baby son for the first time.

Bardem appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the US TV host congratulated him on the birth of his first child.

The actor grinned and said, "Thank you, thank you very much." When asked how Cruz and the baby are, he said, "Everything is going perfectly." The couple have not publicly announced the name of their son but Spanish director and family friend Santiago Segura let the cat out of the bag.

Santiago inadvertently blurted out the name of the little boy after he was questioned by journalists.

He said, "I know what you want and you don't understand why they don't come running to show off the baby and say, 'Look, here's Leo'. You're a bunch of busybodies." — PTI

Sanjay, Ajay Ready to meet Salman

A get-together bringing together Bollywood A-listers Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan is being planned in Bangkok -- thanks to simultaneous shoots of director Anees Bazmi's Ready and David Dhawan's Rascal.

Anees Bazmi and David Dhawan have more in common right now than meets the eye. Considered comic maestros, they both are in Bangkok shooting almost next to each other.

Under the normal circumstances, the stars from the two units would be seen hobnobbing with one another, especially since Devgn-Dutt-Dhawan bond magnificently with Salman. But blame it on the mutually incompatible schedules, the Rascal team is not able to spend time with the Ready team.

With David Dhawan helming Sanjay Dutt's first production Rascal and Anees Bazmi determined to wrap up Ready, the pace is naturally frantic. Repeated attempts to party together have been thwarted.

But Anees is about to change that. He's planning a big get-together for the two units this week. "It's really strange. We all love one another in the two units... but we aren't able to spend time together here in Bangkok. We're doing night shoots. We haven't had a moment to breath. I'm now planning a dinner for both the units. We have to meet... We hardly get to meet in Mumbai. Chalo... Bangkok hi sahi," says Anees. — IANS

The 41-year-old actress has realised of the pressure on the women in Hollywood to look good and has spoken about the possible chances of a surgery in the future.

"I think there is an extreme pressure on women and men to stay young and unfortunately men and women don't see it to grow old gracefully.

"A lot of women go too far and end up looking a hell of a lot older than they actually are and it sort of has a reverse effect. So talk to me in 10 years," said the former Friends star.

Aniston's latest film is romantic comedy Just Go With It where she stars alongside actor Adam Sandler playing the role of an assistant to a plastic surgeon. —PTI

Stories of ambition, aspirations
Col IJS Cheema (retired) takes a serious look at where our society is heading
SD Sharma

The Urdu couplet, Duniyan ne tazarbato hawadish ki shaql mein jo kuchh mujhe diya hai lauta rha hoon mein, by Sahir is apt to describe Col IJS Cheema (retired), a soldier-turned-author who shares his life experiences through an anthology of short stories in English.

His maiden literary creation titled Assassination of God and Other Stories which was recently released at Chandigarh Press Club has 18 stories based on the problems ailing the society and the aspirations, ambitions and struggles of the people wishing for an ideal society.

Charity begins at home, with newspapers
Saurabh Malik

Yesterday's newspaper is good only for wrapping fish. But not when it comes to the People for Animals. It not only goes to the dogs, but also for improving finances, and ecology. That's right! The animal rights organisation is all set to script a fiscal and environmental success story with the newsprint; nay fit for the newsprint.

Just in case you do not know, it has embarked upon an ambitious plan to generate wealth from waste; and in the process not just gain those precious bucks required so much for its operations, but also to generate employment, provide education and to keep the environs clean.

It has, in fact, tied up Piya Sharma Charitable Trust to bag applause, and newspapers, from your home to make alluring shopping bags out of it.

Never in favour of putting a bite on you, PFA -by making and selling the bags -is not only hoping to take a giant leap towards self sufficiency, but also to use the funds it generates to open a new chapter of education in the lives of at least three girls.

And, then there are people all set to gain from the manufacturing and marketing of the classy bags. That's waste to money. Rags to riches, story, indeed!

Don't brood folks! You too tend to gain something out of it. Some of the newspapers you give in charity come back to you in the fashion of shopping bags.

Not a bad bargain, fellows. You give something and get back something - not just in materialistic terms, but also in form of satisfaction. That's exactly what is called "fulfilment guaranteed".

And, if you are scratching your pretty little head with anxious fingers thinking how to go about it. Give all your worries away, along with the newspapers. The boys from PFA are already on the job.

Spice up
Nourish your hair
Good heath is as important as applying oils and masques

Healthy, lustrous hair is most important to the appearance and is not really difficult to achieve. What one needs is awareness of the kind of treatment it requires, according to individual hair type and characteristics. In terms of nourishment, the first thing to remember is that the body must be in a state of good health. A diet that is low in nutritional value, lack of sleep, a sedentary lifestyle, stress and illness, are all reflected on the skin and hair. Hair is actually fed by the nutrients in the blood stream. Both nutrition and good blood circulation are extremely vital to healthy hair.

The hair also needs external nourishment. This is more so in winter, when the weather is dry and robs the hair of moisture and oils. In this respect natural ingredients are ideal and some of these are easily available at home, like yoghurt, lemon juice, honey, vegetable oils and so on. The nature and texture of the hair determines the ingredients that should be used. For instance, greasy hair would benefit by lemon juice and egg white. Both help to cleanse and cut down on oiliness.

The application of oils provides nourishment to the hair and softens hair texture. If you apply oil with a light massage, it also helps to stimulate blood circulation to the hair follicles. Dry, rough, brittle hair improves with regular oil applications. This would include hair that has been dyed treated with chemical lotions, like dyed and coloured hair. The hair should not be rubbed vigorously. Only the fingertips should be used, to actually move the scalp with small rotary movements. Oils have their own particular properties and benefits. Olive oil, for instance, helps to restore the normal acid-alkaline balance of the scalp. It is useful for oily hair with dandruff. Castor oil is said to have hair darkening properties. While it will not turn white hair black, it will restore darkness to hair that has turned brown due to excessive sun-exposure. It is also useful in cases of hair damage. Pure coconut oil is most commonly used in India. It helps to improve hair texture and is said to promote growth. Almond oil is very nourishing for extremely dry hair. Oils can also be mixed with various other ingredients and applied on the hair. Two oils, like coconut oil and castor oil can also be mixed together. Warm the oil before application.

For dry, damaged hair with split ends: First cut off the split ends. Once or twice a week heat pure coconut oil or almond oil and apply on the scalp and hair. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hot towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for 5 minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap 3 or 4 times. Hair is actually porous and this helps the hair and scalp absorb the oil better. Leave the oil on overnight and wash your hair the next morning.

For split ends and dry, brittle hair: Take one tablespoons sesame seed (til) oil, one teaspoon pure glycerin and one egg yolk. Mix together and apply on the hair. Apply on ends too. For longer hair, take more oil. Wearing a plastic shower cap will help. Wash your hair after half an hour.

For oily hair and dandruff: Heat pure coconut oil, or sesame seed (til) oil or pure olive oil and apply on the scalp at night, using cotton wool. Rub gently as you apply the oil, to dislodge dandruff flakes. Leave the oil on overnight. Next morning, apply the juice of a lemon on the scalp and wash your hair after half an hour.

To improve hair texture and colour: Mix one teaspoon castor oil with one tablespoon pure coconut oil. Heat and apply on the hair and scalp. Leave on overnight. Castor oil helps to darken hair which has become brown due to sun-damage and other reasons.

Hair oil with amla and methi: Take 10 to 15 gms of dry amla and one teaspoon fenugreek (methi) seeds. Grind both amla and methi seeds coarsely. Add them to 100 ml pure coconut oil or sesame seed (til) oil. Put all the ingredients in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid. Keep it in the sun daily for 15 days, shaking it each day in order to stir the ingredients. After 15 days, strain the oil through a clean muslin cloth and keep the oil in a glass jar. This oil may be used to apply on the hair. It will benefit all hair types, as well as dandruff conditions.

Egg is one of the most versatile ingredients. It contains silicon, sulphur and fatty acids that help to nourish the hair. The white of the egg has a powerful cleansing action too. Applied on the hair, egg coats the hair shaft and adds thickness, shine and body. Beat an egg with a little milk to form a thickish consistency and apply it on the scalp and hair. After half an hour, rinse the hair well with water. If you add a few drops of eau-de-cologne to a mug of water and use it as a last rinse, it will help to get rid of unpleasant odour.

Body wise
Understanding hunger

People who struggle with their weight have problems managing appetite and hunger, and often confuse the two. Hunger and appetite are not synonyms. In fact, they are entirely different processes. Hunger is the need for food. It is more of a process to drive you to eat because the body needs certain nutrients for maintaining life. It refers to physical discomfort caused by prolonged lack of food. One common sign is a rumbling stomach including hunger pangs gnawing feeling in the stomach, general tension, restlessness and light headed feelings.

Appetite on the other hand is the desire or craving for food. It may be prompted by the sight or smell of food. Thus appetite is generally an emotional drive, whereas hunger is considered a biological drive.

Shutting down the appetite is one sure ways to lose weight permanently. You need to work at slowly reducing your appetite and need to listen to your body's hunger signals. However, if you cannot control your appetite, then you cannot control your weight.

Ways to reduce appetite and control hunger

If you want to stay in full control of your appetite, and control your hunger, here are a few tips you should try-

Replace your normal dinner plates with smaller ones: People will often eat all of what they're served, so use smaller plates if you are cutting calories. You will still feel like you have a full plate of food, but will be eating a lot less.

Spice up your food: Spicy foods make you feel fuller. If you can't eat spicy foods, settle for more flavourful foods. Strong flavours satisfy the taste buds, which signal to the appetite being satisfied.

Eat slowly: The brain actually takes ten minutes longer than the stomach to receive the message that it is full. Thus, eating too fast might cause you to eat beyond the point of fullness without even realising.

Eat without distractions and concentrate on your food: Eating foods without the TV turned on, without the computer in front, is a good strategy to be aware of what we are eating. Mindless eating while distracted by another activity will often lead to eating more than you realise.

Avoid taking second helpings: The easiest way is to eat your food is in thali style. Pre decide how much you want to eat. Serve up your plate with the correct portions in the kitchen and only eat that. Do not place platters of food on the table.

Don't starve yourself: Starving is the greatest enemy of healthy eating habits. It creates a feeling of energy deficiency and people try to eat more after periods of starving to "make up for the lost food". Nothing increases hunger/appetite more than starving for an extended period of time. Eating number of small meals a day is one way to avoid starving.

Drink a lot of soup/broth before a meal: Vegetable/chicken broths are awesome to taste and very easy to prepare. The key is to drink enough so that you almost start filling full and then proceed for the main course dishes.

Drink a glass of water before every meal: It fills your stomach and gives you a sense of fullness, which in turn decreases your appetite. As water does not have any calories, it's ideal for people who are already over-weight and are controlling their appetite in order to lose weight.

Drink water first when you feel like you might be hungry: Researchers have said that many times when we feel hungry, it's actually our body telling us we're thirsty.

Eat foods with low glycemic index: Foods with high glycemic index cause a sudden rise and fall of blood sugar level. Typically, falling blood sugar levels trigger the 'need' to eat more food and that creates a sense of immediate hunger. Apples, bananas, green vegetables, and beans are some examples of foods with low glycemic index. These foods cause a slow increase of blood sugar level and provide consistent levels of energy for a prolonged period of time.

Increase your dietary fibre and protein intake: Dietary fibre increases the feeling of "fullness" and suppresses appetite. Including fibre-heavy foods into your diet, like fresh fruits and vegetables, will go a long way in suppressing your appetite. You'll crave a lot less when you're not physically hungry. On the other hand, foods higher in protein will take a lot longer for your body to break down and this means that you're less likely to be hungry shortly after eating them. Also, proteins will not affect your blood sugar, causing it to rise or dip.

Chew on some sugarless chewing gum: Studies indicate that having chewing gum reduces hunger and controls appetite. People who chew gum between meals eat fewer snacks and fell hungry less often. This is because chewing gum may distract the mind from impulsive eating and curb appetite by offering oral satisfaction to the mind and taste buds.
