Go RED in style
So the international ‘wear red’ day is around the corner (read Valentine's Day) and we have women everywhere showing their support for the heart by proudly donning this fiery colour. But this is easier said than done. Red is a difficult colour to master; worn incorrectly, it can end up making you looking like a Santa Claus, Christmas cake, cherry tomato or worse! So, to help you stay away from disaster dressing, we lend five tips for a stylish red Valentine. Go slow
Everyone cannot carry red. So, if you are a first time red user or are used to only wearing black or neutrals, start with a red blouse under a blazer. Even carrying a red clutch with your neutral outfit can help you overcome the fear of colour. Colour code
Bright hues generally do not go with red. Yellow or orange are a big no, no! Don't team green with red, it will make you look like a Christmas tree. Black and red is a cliché so avoid it. Wear colours that will anchor the look. Tips from designer Sabah Khan. n
When you are wearing red the thumb rule is don't wear it from head to toe. Make up
"If you're wearing red make sure you do not put red on your face or nails," says Anju from Styl studio in Panchkula. "However, rouge lips alone or a cherry manicure for V-day could be a fun way to show your support - just don't wear both at the same time," she adds. Just jewels
Jewellery should be minimal, which means only one thing -either necklace, chandelier earrings or a broche. "Gold tends to complement red, but diamond works too, as long as you don't wear too much bling overall," says Roopa Vohra, celebrated jewellery designer. Check out
Hunting for a red dress? We suggest choose something in a classic cut that's not too revealing. For that perfect red dress check Voila in Sector 10, Ten West-10, Waga-10, Micky Chhabra in Sector 17. Foot work
For shoes, opt for something understated but not boring - a matte pewter pump, pointed kitten heels, wedge heels and stilettos are the perfect choice. And finally grab a clutch for a killer look. jigyasachimra@tribunemail.com |
What's your tune this Valentine?
This Monday would have been another mundane affair had it not been Valentine's Day. So, as every heart gears up to fall in love on February 14, here's a peek-a-boo on what celebrities are 'tuning' into this V-day. Dil se
"I am going to cut my album titled Dil Ki Zubaan this Valentine's Day. But, my song for the Valentine week would be Maria from Westside Story (a musical). Hum aur tum aur yeh sama by Mohammed Rafi is another splendid number. I would be busy with my concert in Hyderabad this Valentine's day. Raghav
Sachar, singer Love each day
"The song pee loon from my film Once Upon A Time In Mumbai is my pick for this season. As for spending time with my wife, it looks difficult this year as I am shooting for Murder 2 in Goa. But I think, one does not need a specific day to express love and she knows that." Emraan
Hashmi, actor Truly romantic
"My number this Valentine's Day would be Maula Mere Maula from the film Anwar. The day is special for my wife Sonali and me, just as all 365 days of the year. We go out for romantic dinners and spend a lot of quality time together. The coming week will be full of excitement as Sonali's birthday is on
February 17." Roopkumar Rathod, singer Sing-a-song
"It's difficult to point out one particular song. For a singer, it is very hard to select just one from a sea of songs. Still, if somebody insists it would be Mohammed Rafi's Likkhe jo khat tujhe. I don't celebrate Valentine's Day, I would rather be performing in some concert." Toshi, singer |
Sing along

Patiala House strikes
home
The latest Bollywood movie Patiala House starring Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma in the lead roles has left the Patialvis spellbound. After the movie premier held in Patiala yesterday, we talked to the audience and found that people really enjoyed the sports-based drama film, in which Akshay Kumar played cricket for England against his father Rishi Kapoor's wish. Akshay and Anushka have come together for the first time on the big screen. Anushka plays a girl next door (Simran) and Akshay plays a cricketer (Parghat Singh Kahlon).
This is what they feel about the film: The movie is really nice and depicted Punjabi culture in good light. It is family entertainer and the storyline is good. The movie is about attachments, affiliations and family bonding and revolves around the father-son relationship. — Gurbachan Singh Bachi Patiala House is an inspirational film. It's about chasing your dreams, as and when you get another opportunity, if you don't succeed the first time. I really like the movie. The release of the movie, exactly one week before the keenly anticipated World Cup cricket matches, will surely boost box office collections. — Varinder Chauhan Patiala House is a sombre film with the focal point being drama and histrionics rather than the slapstick wit or in-your-face comedy that one anticipates from an Akshay-starrer. It's more about family bonding with cricket interwoven. Still, the movie is worth watching. The Punjabi tadka in the movie left me mesmerised. — Gaurav The climax, of course, is powerful and the USP of the film. It evokes emotions at dual levels - when the father decides to watch his son play cricket and also when Akshay wins the match for England. I really enjoyed the movie and its songs. — Satbir Bajwa The hallmark of the film is the combination of an engaging drama and cricket, and that's what makes this product stand out from the earlier Akshay starrers. Akshay, Anushka and Rishi Kapoor have acted brilliantly and the subject of the movie is really good. — DP Singh |
Creation of the young mind
Maybe this is just a stepping-stone towards creating something big; maybe all the well-known inventors of the world also started somewhat like this. Here's profiling a few city youngsters whose creations can qualify as inventions. Car with mileage
A 12-member team from the Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology called Stealth took five months to complete their invention, which they term as the prototype of the next generation car. "Looking at the oil crisis and the rising cost of petrol, this seems to be the only solution. It gives a mileage of 163 kilometres per litre," says Ankit Khurana, team leader. Their team was the first from Asia to be short-listed for the finals of the 'Shell Eco Marathon Americas' held at California. The car also stood first in the category - perseverance in the face of adversity. "The single-seater car is propelled by a 125 cc engine." Robot talk The robot created by the six-member team of mechanical engineering students of UIET, Panjab University can help in mining or even digging tunnels. Informs Aggayapal Singh, team member, "A powerful hammer is fixed in front of the robot. It has a momentum-based cutting blade, which destroys anything that comes in front." With a wireless remote, the robot can function in uninhabited areas. "It can even carry a camera, which would help us get pictures from remote areas," says Yajur Digvijay Singh Brar. What will make the robot endure all weather conditions are its tyres made of nylon. "It's made of a very hard substance that's difficult to damage. In fact, no other robots present at the college festival could damage our tyres, which we easily did." And why not, out of the total expenditure of Rs 1.14 lakh, Rs 30,000 was spent only on
tyres. Sky is the limit
Instead of books and journals on modern technology or present day spacecrafts, inspiration for this invention was taken from the ancient Vimanika Shastra. "We studied Vedic literature by Maharishi Bhardwaj in which he wrote about the concept of Shakuni Viman," informs Abhilasha Srivastav and Ratika Dhiman, students of Dikshant Public School, who made the model of the spacecraft that was selected by NASA. It took them four months to complete the model. One-seat wonder
This invention by third-year students of mechanical engineering, UIET at Panjab University was especially for an annual event organised by Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at Indore - BAJA. And they came up with a one-seater off road vehicle. The maximum speed the vehicle can go up to is 75 kilometres per hour. Made at the cost of 3.5 lakh, it took the team nine months to complete the vehicle. |
Wholesome Chinese
Three cheers to Chinese food. They have made our butter chicken, dal makhani and sarson da saag aficionados fall for Manchurian and hakka noodles. Thanks to the overpowering aroma of Chinese cuisine, we Indians have developed a taste for it beyond Continental and Italian dishes. And it was after meeting Raju Chadha, the man behind Bombay Chopsticks, we realised that Chinese is the next best thing after ghar ka khanna. Though it's a debatable issue but we leave it at that to discuss something better—food. Eat, enjoy and relax
Situated at the back of Sector 10 market (a place always packed with youngsters), the restaurant is a pleasant surprise as it flaunts a few yards of open space in the front. Aesthetically done, the open space gives a feeling of a country house. The restaurant can seat 48 persons inside and 16 outside the restaurant. Food for thought
Readily available Chinese food is nothing new to the city. But the menu is enticing here as they serve a variety of lambs, poultry, fish and other seafood. "Every single dish in the menu has been tasted and then added in the menu," says Raju Chadha. On the menu
Sip the soup: Try from peppery lemon soup, hot and sour soup, talumein, manchow, mizu taki or wonton soup. Start up: In appetizers take your pick from jumbo prawns, pan- fried fish in oriental sauce, Beijing fish, chicken aniseed or spicy roast lamb with Chinese cabbage. If you are a vegetarian, you can try crispy oriental vegetable spring role, crispy vegetable salt and pepper or crispy lotus stem chilly garlic or crispy satakey mushroom in konjee sauce. From the grill: Try assorted vegetables skewers, grilled lettuce chicken, fish skewers or grilled tiger prawns in spicy basil. But the best and must have is chilly garlic noodles from the grill. Popular with youngsters are their dim sums, sui mai and kotheys. Main course: You can choose from a variety of vegetarian dishes, poultry, lamb, fish and sea-food and a variety of rice and noodles. We suggest five combination of vegetables in chilly kikoman sauce, stir-fried sliced lamb with oriental vegetables, sliced fish in Chinese parsley sauce and prawns in black bean sauce. Sweet something: Desserts are pretty interesting here. You can try a brownie sundae, chocolate mozo with ice-cream, date pan-cake, apple cinnamon roles or basil ice-cream. But if you go by what we say, their basil ice-cream and chocolate mozo are a must-must have. Rate list: A meal for two would cost around Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500. jigyasachimra@tribunemail.com |

Brad Pitt styles partner Jolie
Hollywood actor Brad Pitt takes interest in his partner Angelina Jolie's wardrobe and even decides her outfits for red carpet. He stunned the Jolie's styling team when he selected a blue Max Azria gown for her to wear at the Screen Actors Guild awards in 2009. "We were going to dress Angelina Jolie and we had a choice of three gowns with us. When we got there, she said she wanted Brad to pick," Lubov Azria, chief creative officer of BCBGMaxAzria Group said. "There's usually a staff of 10 people who all have an opinion. But Brad was very decisive. He's an architect and likes geometric things. He chose the dress that everyone thought was backwards, and it was. He likes boat necks — that's all she wears."A boat neck - also known as a bateau neck - refers to a wide neckline that runs horizontally, front and back, almost to the shoulders. While Pitt takes an interest in Jolie's wardrobe, the 35-year-old actor has previously claimed she doesn't worry about being fashionable as long as she feels comfortable. "I don't think too much about what to wear on the red carpet. I usually have three basic colours and I get the same shapes in different colours. But I like to get dressed up and feel like a lady every once in a while," she said. — IANS |
Aniston, Jolie buried their hatchet? Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie's enmity over Brad Pitt is part of Hollywood lore but celebrity blogger Perez Hilton claims that the Friends star has moved on. After splitting up from Aniston, Pitt and Jolie got together six years ago. The actors reportedly fell in love while shooting Mr and Mrs Smith while Pitt was still married to Aniston. Hilton says he had asked Aniston about Jolie during a conversation with her last year. And her apparent response suggested it was all water under the bridge. "Look, that was so long ago, and we've moved on,” said Aniston, according to Perez. The blogger also asked Aniston about Pitt, who she divorced in 2005. "I still talk to Brad and everything's fine," she apparently told him. Perez told the Life & Style magazine:"I believe what she has to say. I think she really has moved on." The blogger said he had not talked about his conversation with the 41-year-old actor until now. "I had not talked about meeting Jennifer Aniston out of respect for her and respect for the situation. It was actually a very powerful moment, I think for both of us," he said. — PTI |

In the story, entitled Angry Dad: The Movie, Bart Simpson's cartoon about an aggressive father is turned into a film and wins huge critical acclaim.
