Panjab University (PU) Syndicate members today accepted the request of director-principal of the HSJ Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital GK Gauba to “relinquish him of his charge” and to “repatriate him to the PGI”, which resulted in a halt to the week-long protests by PU students that witnessed a few even embarking on an indefinite hunger strike.

The counsel of Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh filed an application today in the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) court that Section 18 of the Punjab Municipal Act, 1976, does not cover the mayoral elections clause, under which notice had been issued to the Mayor, due to which Pali did not file any reply to the notice today.

Two killed in accidents
Kharar, February 7
Two persons were killed in different road accidents here today. Two motorbikes collided head on, killing one of the motorcyclists on spot on the Kharar-Badala road. Manjinder Singh, a resident of Cholta Khurd village, was coming towards Kharar when his bike rammed into the motorcycle of Satnam Singh from Kailon village. Manjinder was going towards his office in Balongi. Satnam had a pillion rider, Paramjit Kaur, accompanying him who, too, got hurt in the accident.

Pedestrian run over by car

A 43-year-old pedestrian, identified as Anil Kumar of Kaimbwala village, was run over by a speeding Zen car near the residence of the Haryana Chief Minister yesterday evening. He succumbed to injuries at the PGI today.

In a major success the police today nabbed the main accused in the Rs 30 lakh robbery case in January 2009. The police team headed by the Sector 20 Police Station had sought the production warrant of the accused identified as Jagdeepak, alias Twinkal, a resident of New Colony, Amritsar, from Jalandhar Jail on January 31.

One booked for molestation

Vijay Pal Rana, a resident of Jagatpura village, complained to the police that Prabhjot Singh, a resident of Phase XI, Mohali, tried to outrage the modesty of his daughter while she was returning from school. The suspect allegedly slapped her and threatened her of dire consequences.
