This weekend, create your own bar!
Jasmine Singh

This is coolest part of the house, where after a hard day's work you can kick off fatigue and enjoy some great drinks. This is the bar, where life takes a high, anytime and any season of the year. There is nothing like a dry season!

A good look at your house will assist you in selecting a place where you can create a cool niche. This could be the place, your very own bar. Sinful, sophisticated, classic or regular, you can jazz up this section in whichever you want. Tingling glasses, imported beer-shakers, screw-drivers, ice-buckets, wooden wine rack, brass bottle holder - this is your place. This weekend give a shot at doing your own bar!

Touch of class

The smell of fresh Chestwood looms all around Gursimran Singh Walia's, director CCPL Hospitality (a venture of Commando Caterers), bar at their residence in Mohali. A stylish bar that doesn't interfere in the composition of the house is a nice chill out place for friends and family members. Designed by Gursimran's father, Kawaljit Singh Walia, the bar has been accessorized with the latest and classic picked up during Gursimran's foreign trips. "My father, an ex-Air Force officer, came up with this concept of a bar," says Gursimran, a teetotaler like his father. "Not always does one have time to go out with friends and clients. A nicely done bar is always a good idea," he adds. Without occupying much space, the bar is with modern and classic elements and artistic additions. Cognac bottles, almost 40 years old, which are worth Rs 2 lakh, add a classic touch to it.

Jazz it up yourself

Drinking is fun, especially with friends and family members. It can be fun with some add-ons like stylish and elegant wine-stopper and pourer, chandelier lights, bar stools, beer-shakers. But if you have decided to take a plunge, then hire an architect. Here are some pointers

n Look up for designs on Internet or books on the same. Look at the home improvement section and pick out a book that will tell you how to build your own bar.

n One of the easiest ways to equip a bar with accessories is, of course, to purchase an all-inclusive set or kit.

n Choose an all-inclusive set that features full-sized bar accessories; some sets have slightly smaller sized shakers and essentials, which may make the convenient set a little less convenient.

Must haves

Shaker-Cocktail shakers can be made of plastic, metal, and even glass.

Straine-When you are mixing drinks that result in sediment or just for the purpose to strain ice, a bar strainer is necessary.

Corkscrew/Opener-Corkscrews can be as simple as a standard old-fashioned model or complex.

Tongs-Ice tongs are an essential sanitary way of handling cubes.

Stir Spoon or Stirrer-Bartending spoons should not look the same as regular spoons used by customers.

Ice Crusher-There are two basic varieties of ice crusher: the electric type that looks like a sturdy blender and the manual type, which requires you to spin a handle.

Flavours from Italy at Forno
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Having taken the world cuisine by storm, pizza and pasta are used by restaurateurs as a sure shot bait for consumers. Second-best-liked cuisine after Chinese, Italian khana, especially pizza, is immensely popular in our country. Thanks to the (far-fetched) resemblance to our humble roti (the only difference being we eat the roti with a vegetable and they top it on), pizza has become a staple in every household, especially with the younger lot.

Something fishy

Made from beer battered fish, fish and chips is one thing that you must try here.

Chinese delicacies on platter
Jasmine Singh

If you still don't know, this is the Chinese New Year of Rabbit. Talking about Rabbit, it is the most stylish creatures amid Chinese animal signs. And the 'stylish' factor applies well to the food being served at Mainland China, Sector-26, as part of the Chinese Food Festival. The assortment of enticing, soft and hot food served at Mainland China smells of authenticity. And if you are a food connoisseur, you just can't miss the subtle taste of Starannis and Schezuan pepper.

The next step after you have had a good look at the décor is to pick and choose from the menu, which is especially designed for the food festival. The dishes have been whipped up in an authentic style, incorporating flavours of China. Lined up on the menu are vegetarian and non-vegetarian soups - roasted corn and black pepper soup, wintermelon and chicken velvet soup (a light mix of sweet wintermelon and chicken dices), roast duck noodle soup, creamy asparagus and crabmeat soup.

Souro Kiran De, manager, Mainland China, gets hold of the menu to explain how every dish is made with 'genuine' spices. "The Chinese New Year Festival at Mainland China offers a good assortment of dishes that are cooked in a particular style. People are already coming back for their favourites."

The Rabbit loves to express itself and so does the food here. Konjee Crispy Shitake Mushroom with Spicy Hoisin sauce, Stir fried Zucchini mushroom and babycorn with dry red chillies, tender fried corn and waterchestnuts with basil and cashewnuts as vegetarian starters; fire-baked prawns stir-fried with red peppers, beggars chicken. The wok tossed fish with chilli chu hou sauce in non-vegetarian starters is has a hint of Punjabi flavour.

Manish Goyal, director, Mainland China, sees how the food festival is one way of getting people to taste and know about authentic Chinese delicacies. The main course again offers vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes - stir-fried greens in sambal sauce, spicy vegetable hot pot, basa fillet with celery and wine, wok tossed prawns with caramelised walnuts and a nice sumptuous ginger and garlic chicken. So, even if you are not a Rabbit, this one is worth digging into!

Fight back girls!
Jasmine Singh

It is about a simple funda in life, whether a commander gives it to a cadet or a mother to her daughter travelling all alone - attack is the best form of defense. This doesn't require profound thinking and cannot be ignored. All you girls who make a trip from home to office and back home, who walk down to their tutorials, who love to hangout with friends over the weekends, all you ladies immaterial of what you do…personal safety is definitely the thing to sit up and take notice of. Current statistics show increase in the number of attacks on women, which should be bringing us to a consensus — fight back. Here, girls share incidents and tips on how they dealt with untoward incidents, fought back with a belt or a pepper spray (imported from abroad).

Arm yourself

Pepper spray, cutter, Swiss knife, knuckles, leather belts, baseball bat and hockey are some things that one must keep in the car. A pepper spray in your bag can be of great help. It comes in an aerosol form and its active ingredient is OC (oleoresin capsicum) — a term used in reference to chilly peppers. The main ingredient of pepper spray is capsaicin, the oil extracted from chili peppers that temporarily causes severe irritation in the eyes and lungs, strong burning sensation and difficulty in breathing.

As many as 13 countries restrict the use of pepper spray. In Asia, Hong Kong, India and Japan prohibit the spray. In India, however, it is being used by police officers. One does not require a license to use it, and it is not available over the counter.

I had stopped at the traffic lights in phase 7, Mohali, at around 10 pm while coming back from work when from nowhere a person opened the driver's door and tried to push me out. I don't know how I managed to grab a cutter, which is generally lying in my car, and pierced his arm. I couldn't even shout or raise an alarm in the confusion, but the cutter did it for me.

Dud at box office, part of Oscar library

The Abhishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone-starrer period film Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey might have bombed at the box office but it will soon be a part of the prestigious Oscar library.

The library of the Academy of Motion Picture and Science has asked for the screenplay of the film for their permanent core collection, which is made for filmmakers, writers, actors and students worldwide for their research work, the producers said in a statement.

Made by Ashutosh Gowariker, the film was based on the Chittagong uprising of 1930, as depicted in journalist Manini Chatterjee's book Do & Die.

The selection by the library is not based on box-office performance of the film but mainly on its artistic merit, original screenplay with a substance and the film as a whole.

Recently, screenplays of Bollywood films like Rock On, Rajneeti and Action Replayy have made it to the Oscar library. — PTI

Rihanna’s single ruffles puritans

Rihanna's racy new single S&M has been deemed too raunchy for 11 countries. The music clip to accompany the single has provoked censorship bosses across the world - and the promo is banned in 11 countries. It has also been axed from the BBC's daytime radio playlist in Britain.

The song's suggestive lyrics and the accompanying video are already subject to an age restriction on YouTube.com.

And now it has emerged broadcasting watchdogs around the world are clamping down on the track. Britain's Daily Mirror reports the promo for S and M has been banned in 11 countries, and BBC bosses in Britain have refused to allow DJs on its flagship station Radio 1 to play the song before 7pm.

"We are waiting for an edited version before deciding whether it will be played in the daytime," a spokesman told the publication.

In an interview with website Spin, the 22-year-old singer said it had a deeper message than just sex.

"I don't think of it in a sexual way, I'm thinking metaphorically," Rihanna was quoted as saying. "People are going to talk about you, you can't stop that. You just have to be that strong person and know who you are so that stuff just bounces off," she added. — ANI

And I cannot imagine doing this if I didn't have children," said Kidman. The Australian beauty also admitted she would love to win the Best Actress Oscar at the upcoming Academy Awards because it would be a victory for the entire family."When I won the Oscar for The Hours in 2003, it just went past. It's definitely our daughter Sunday's film too," said Kidman. — PTI

But I will tell them what I want," said Kruger. The 34-year-old actor also said that her boyfriend Joshua Jackson's style has evolved since they began dating.

Aniston releases new perfume

Jennifer Aniston has released her new perfume line at Sephora stores. The actor's eponymous fragrance is reportedly heavy on floral scents, especially jasmine, which she names as one of her all-time favourites.

"I wanted this fragrance to be a personal library of scent memories," Fox News quoted Aniston as saying in a statement.

"For example, my love of night blooming jasmine has lasted a lifetime. Growing up in California, I distinctly remember the scent of the jasmine on summer evenings." The scent also contains hints of citrus, sandalwood and coastal wildflowers.

'Music is universal'
Deepali Sagar

Music is like food. If we don't explore it, we can never understand it," says Shashank Subramanyam, renowned flute player, who is in the city for a show organised by SPIC MACAY. Even though his specialisation is in South Indian music, he also experiments with fusion music. "South Indian and North Indian music are same. The only difference is in the presentation," he says.

Shashank Subramanyam
Shashank Subramanyam

Classical touch

Classical music is an emotional outburst; every note has emotional depth. Classical music of any country has gone through thousands of years of research. This is the reason for its richness. Even though classical music has some rigidity, if a musician is versatile something new can be created," he adds.

Fusion element

Fusion music is all about combining different things. Shashank has performed with a group from Denmark named 'Jungle Orchestra' where he combined classical music with jazz. "Fusion is a very small proportion of my life. It gives my creative side a vent. Moreover, fusion is a great way to interact with different musicians," he says. He feels that music is all about producing and packaging in appropriate ratios. "Music is never easy to create. Even the Bollywood's peppy numbers are not easy to produce. It takes a lot of effort and time," he says. His next venture is 'The spirit of Krishna' where he would be performing with other musicians from South and North India.

Youngsters and western music

"Many youngsters don't know anything about music. They just listen. But if they show interest, there is nothing better than classical music," he opines.

n A good instinct for news

n Dedication and hard work

n Understanding of current news

n Team work is vital to be a success

n Persuasiveness followed by good communication skills

n Good training goes a long way

n Though not in one's hand, luck matters as well for success of stories.

Online versus print

Stephen Hall with studentsJournalism in the UK going through an upheaval, shares Stephen. "Its largely due to readers opting for online versions than buying papers. Most of the papers have online versions that not only have news, graphics but also radio as well as TV channels." Now there is a proposal to charge for online versions.

First Day First Show
Despite abuses, a likeable thriller

Sudhir Mishra's Yeh Saali Zindagi (YSZ) opened to a mixed response. With as many as 22 lip-locks shared by actors Arunoday Singh and Aditi Rao (who plays his wife in the flick), it stars Irrfan Khan and Chitrangada Singh as well. Set in Delhi, YSZ is a thriller that charts the course of love.

I fell in love with Irrfan Khan's character. He is the epitome of passion and unconditional love. The three stories that run concurrently keep one hooked. Though abuses are a part of normal life, hearing them onscreen makes one detest them.

Kanchan, lawyer

The movie has amazing performances by Irrfan Khan and Chitrangada Singh. The newcomers are equally promising. Love stories light up this thriller.

Mayank, Trainee, NIIT

It's too vulgar. We really couldn't stand the foul language. This is not our idea of entertainment at all.

Samita and Sunaina, engineering students. (This duo walked out of the movie in interval)

Risky affair

Coming from James Cameron's stable Sanctum, The Only Way Out Is Down is about divers on a treacherous mission to unexplored caves. This 3-D thriller is inspired by the film's co-writer Andrew Wight's near-death experience of leading a diving expedition.

The movie is a marvel. A pacy thriller, this is the best from Cameron. This has fabulous cinematography shot underwater in Gold Coasts, Queensland, Australia.

Arpit Dhiman, student

An awesome flick. Full of adventure, it captures a range of human emotions that change according to situations. Sanctum is about hope, determination and 'never give up' spirit.
