Expectant mothers, planning to visit the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, beware. There are not likely to be many experienced doctors around to respond to an emergency call. For, the gynaecology department at the hospital has “virtually” run short of doctors.

100 in line for post of PGI Director

At least 100 doctors from across the country are in the queue for heading the PGI, Chandigarh, the premier health institute of the region, for which the deadline to submit applications ended today.

HC issues notice on PIL for CBI probe
Chandigarh, January 31
The Khushpreet kidnapping and murder case has now come under the Punjab and Haryana High Court scanner. Taking up a petition for a CBI probe into the case filed in the public interest, a division bench of the court today issued notice of motion to the UT administration along with the states of Punjab and Haryana.

Shivraj Patil honours 101 NCC cadets
Chandigarh, January 31
Shivraj V Patil, UT Administrator, Chandigarh, felicitated 101 NCC cadets, including seven from Chandigarh, as well as NCC officers, who had participated in the prestigious Republic Day Camp at New Delhi this year. The cadets included 25 girls from Punjab and two from the city.

MC seals 12 illegal sheds

Twelve illegal sheds were sealed by the enforcement staff of the municipal corporation (MC) at the Sector 19 Sadar Bazaar here today. The team sealed all closed sheds as their owners had not opened those.

Pandit Bhatt weaves magic

The first-ever SPICMACAY-ICCR fortnightly classical music festival commenced on a melodic note at the IMTECH auditorium here today. The event organised by the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music Among Youth (SPICMACAY), in association with ICCR, featured Grammy Award winner Mohan Veena wizard Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in the opening concert.

Living up to his reputation as a fast-emerging popular Punjabi singer, Satinder Sartaj kept the audience enthralled at the Tagore Theatre here today. The live concert, veritably titled “Mehfil-e-Sartaj”, organised by the Spice-n-Dice, got off to a inordinately delayed, but musically majestic start, with Sartaj rendering “Haq Bahu dam dam Bahu”, the famous “kalaams” of Sufi mystic Hazrat Baba Sultan Bahu.

Chaman Lal Sharma, Composing Supervisor, retired today after putting in more than 32 years of service. He joined the institution in 1978. He was given a warm send-off by his colleagues. They also lauded his services to the institution.

Travel agency told to compensate complainant

The local District Consumer Forum has directed a Delhi-based travel agency to pay a compensation of ` 20,000 to a city resident for causing “harassment and inconvenience” to his daughter who had to spend two more days in Geneva as the air ticket was not sent to her on time. Besides, the agent has also been asked to refund the cost of the ticket, Rs 48,000.

Uprooted tiles hindering traffic flow
Zirakpur, January 31
Uprooted tiles on a small stretch of the Baltana-Panchkula road is affecting the smooth flow of traffic. The tiles were installed by the Zirakpur Municipal Council few days back after spending lakhs of rupees in an attempt to prevent the damage caused on the stretch during the rainy season. Residents, including women of Gurdev Nagar Colony in Pabhat village today protested against Zirakpur Municipal Council officials for not providing them basic amenities, which they have been demanding for the past four years. Oil, gas conservation fortnight ends

The oil and gas conservation fortnight wherein all three state-run oil marketing companies organised a plethora of activities for school and college students to create awareness about oil conservation concluded today at Bal Bhavan . Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh was the chief guest. During the15 day celebrations held in the city, various contests were held for schoolchildren, including quiz, drawing and painting contests, slogan writing, besides, essay writing and extempore.

Multi-storeyed buildings flout norms in Patiala
Patiala, January 31
Notwithstanding the tall claims of the Patiala Municipal Corporation, multi-storey commercial establishments in violation of the various provisions of the building byelaws are mushrooming in the city. As per the building byelaws, building plans for multi-storey buildings are sanctioned only after they meet all 18 conditions specified in it. What is worrying is the fact that the Patiala MC is yet to initiate steps to check this unhealthy practice.

Representatives of the Punjab College Librarians’ Association (PCLA) have urged the state government to fill the vacant posts in colleges at the earliest. The association said the posts had been lying vacant for the past 10 years.

Jail inmate escapes from court
Kharar, January 31
An inmate of Ropar jail escaped from the Kharar court premises today. The accused Lal Chand alias Lali, a resident of Jandpur village in Kharar, had been lodged at Ropar jail. Head constables Jagdish Singh and Naresh Kumar brought him to Mohali and Kharar courts today. In the morning, Lal Chand attended a court hearing at Mohali pertaining to a theft case. At around 2 pm, he was brought to the Kharar court for hearing in an Arms Act case.

Apparently still not satisfied with the police probe into the allegations of torture and rape of Rajasthani workers in custody, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today ordered a Judicial probe into the alleged incident.

Sushil Kumar, fourth accused in the rape of an 18-year-old Kalka girl in January last year was produced in the district court here today which sent him to judicial custody in Ambala.

2 two-wheelers, car stolen

Ram Saran Malhotra of Sector 42 reported to the police that someone stole his Indigo car (CH01-7678T) from near his residence yesterday. Satish Kumar of Sector 23 lodged a complaint that his motorcycle (CH03S-4742) was stolen from his house on the night of January 23.

APJ Kharar corner glory
Chandigarh, January 31
APJ Kharar beat Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, by 51 runs in the 10th league match of the second Professional Gold Cup U-14 at BTS Academy in Sector 48 here today. After winning the toss, APJ Kharar elected to bat first and scored 170 runs for the loss of five wickets in their stipulated 20 overs.
