Another Chhatbir lioness dies
Was diagnosed with congenital problem due to inbreeding
Tribune News Service

Banur, January 21
A 12-year-old hybrid lioness, Divya, died at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) in Ludhiana today.

The hybrid lioness was brought from Renuka Lion Safari in Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh in July last year. She was declared fit by veterinarians during the time of arrival at Chhatbir Zoo. The lioness was shifted to the lion safari after being quarantined for three weeks on the zoo premises.

In a press release issued here today, zoo officials said the lioness was diagnosed with some congenital problem due to inbreeding. A team from the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, and the Indian Veterinary Institute, Izzat Nagar, Bareli, in Uttar Pradesh had diagnosed the lioness and treated her.

A team of doctors was called from GADVASU for her treatment January 18. The experts found the lioness suffering from osteopathy for two months. It is suspected that the animal developed a tumour on her face. Divya was rushed to GADVASU in Ludhiana today where she died, the press note stated.

Zoo officials said the cause of death would be ascertained after the post-mortem report and histopathological examination of tissues of vital organs.

Chhatbir zoo is now left with only a pair of hybrid lions. The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has banned shifting and breeding of hybrid lions across zoos in India. The hybrid lions are now dying natural deaths in zoos.

Zoo field director Churchil Kumar said the zoo now has 10 tigers and a pair of hybrid lions. Another pair of pure Asiatic lion from Rajkot in Gujarat is likely to arrive in next the few days or so, he said.
