gachak. Screams of “bo kata” by boys could be heard throughout the day. While a few had arranged dholis for the music, others played it on their music systems.

Surprise check at market committee
Officials found absent from duty
Khanna, January 13
Ludhiana DMO Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal conducted a surprise check at the office of market committee in Samrala and found some officials absent from duty. The DMO with his team reached the market committee office at 9:30 am and found mandi supervisors Basant Singh, Surinder Kumar, auction recorders Jaswant Singh and Lakhwinder Singh, clerk Simranjeet Singh and peon Harjot Singh absent from the duty. Later, they visited sabzi mandi and found Charnjit Singh, mandi supervisor, Pardeep Kumar and Pawan Kumar, auction recorders, absent. He took records of the two firms in his possession. The DMO said more checks would be conducted in future also.

Lohri celebrations
Ludhiana: Lohri was celebrated with great zeal on the premises of St GDS Convent School. Students of KG block were dressed in Punjabi attires. All of them were looking beautiful. Students sat around a huge bonfire lit on the campus, sang songs and danced to the beats of Punjabi numbers. Groundnuts and rewaris were distributed among students and staff members. Director of the school Manmohan Singh and principal Manisha Talwar encouraged students to follow their tradition and culture. They also appreciated staff members for their efforts.

Dr Manjit Singh Kang, Vice-Chancellor, expressed concern over the dwindling number of girls and exhorted everyone to celebrate Lohri for both girls and boys.
