Mansinghwala primary school building cries for care
Dehradun, January 12 Temporary toilets shares same water tap for washing dishes used during midday meals, risking children with health and hygiene issues. The toilets are already out of order with no water and basic facilities. The administration is paying no heed to the dilapidated school building, which is appearing to be an abandoned haunted villa with creeping roots of tree through fissures in ceilings and fungus on walls. However, the school authorities are blaming the state Education Department for the negligence and laxity. “The school does not have a building of its own due to which we are facing these problems for years. Dark classrooms, with no ventilation, have resulted in the dampening of walls as well as ceilings of the building. The inadequate number of furniture is also adding jitter to the school administration, which is making students sit on the floor with a single mat on it,” said Mohammed Ashraf Siddiqui, Headmaster of the school. “The school building is very old and sustains its entity from the British era. The building requires thorough perusal by the state Education Department as the ceiling of one of its classrooms plunged down a few months ago leaving students at risk,” added Siddiqui. The school authorities vacated the affected room as soon as they learnt about the damage. Damages have been reported, along with a request letter for renovation, to the Education Department, Dehradun, but the department has given no funds yet. “Though many months have passed, but the condition of the school building remains the same. We are helpless and can’t begin the renovation of the building due to financial crisis and lack of aid from the Education Department. Two damaged rooms of the school building are vacant for now. Even the strong trunk of the peepal tree has already crept into the toilets, created cracks on the walls and increased the risk of caving the building in,” Ashraf asserted. The school building is surrounded by a nullah with water of a sewer flowing into it. The headmaster has written to the state administration demanding funds for its restoration. According to sources, in Dehradun district over 100 schools have been listed for immediate renovation and repair. Additional District Education Officer RS Rawat expressed concern over the damage of school infrastructure and said: “The matter of damage was not in the knowledge of the department. Our team, along with block education officers, will visit the school for the assessment of the damages and soon begin the relief work”. |
MC mulls hiring pvt body to clean Har-ki-Pauri
Haridwar, January 12 The committee has started chalking out technicalities in this regard and the detailed project report is being given final touches. With solid waste management being the vital aspect of the project, the committee has hired the services of a solid waste management expert to survey the area. The report of the survey will be presented at the board meeting of the committee for approval. The project will give a big respite to the committee, which faces the Herculean task of cleaning the Ganga ghats and Har-ki-Pauri after mega religious festivals like the Maha Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh. There are no additional sanitation employees with the committee for the cleaning of Har-ki-Pauri. The same employees who clean the city wards are employed for the cleaning of the ghats as well. This puts a lot pressure on the sanitation staff and as well as the committee. If the project sees the light of the day, the sanitation will not only improve at the world-famous Haridwar sites, but also in other areas of the city, as there will be adequate sanitation employees at the disposal of the Palika. Solid waste management expert Vipin Kumar has been entrusted with the task of surveying the Har-ki-Pauri area and preparing the detail project report. Also, the Ganga Sabha, which manages the Ganga paryers and other religious affairs at Har-ki-Pauri, the Health Department and the committee representatives had discussed the project with District Magistrate R Meenakshi Sundaram. Stating about this project, Executive Officer of the committee BL Arya said they were waiting for the report of the experts for taking further steps in this regard. The committee already had limited resources at its disposal and it was finding it difficult to maintain sanitation at both Har-ki-Pauri and in the city with an insufficient number of sanitation employees. He said the private agency, to which the project would be awarded, would also be given the added benefits like control of nearby sites for advertisement display. Meanwhile, the Opposition in the committee said it was waiting for the detailed project report after which only it would put forth its views on the project. Leader of Opposition in the Municipality Sanjay Sharma said till the report was not prepared and presented at the board neeting it’s not appropriate to comment on the issue. However, he said the issue of cleaning the Har-ki-Pauri area assumed great importance. Every mega fair leaves behind tonnes of garbage, particularly polythene material and solid waste, on a vast area in Haridwar. |

Ayurveda varsity project hits land hurdle
Dehradun, January 12 The plan to establish the first Uttarakhand Ayurveda University at Haridwar and an International Maharishi Charak Research Institute at Haldwani has failed to take off due to land crunch. By all accounts, these projects are aimed at giving fillip to research in ayurveda and also shore up the reputation of the state, keen to develop as a powerhouse of research and development in the Indian system of medicine. Earlier, the government had set its sights on the Rishikul University land in Haridwar, but it soon earned the wrath of the Rishikul Mukti Yagya Samiti (RMYS) that termed the action as a move to acquire the huge Rishikul property and also saw it as a threat to the existence of Sanskrit University already running on the campus. “We are looking for alternative land in both Dehradun and Rishikesh. The university may now be housed outside Haridwar. We may even set up an extension campus there, but we are not able to house the main university there,” said Dr Pooja Bhardwaj, Director, Ayurveda and Unani Services. At the same time, the government has also appointed Prof Stayender Mishra, first Vice-Chancellor of Uttarakhand Ayurveda University. According to the University Act (2009), the university was to be headquartered in Haridwar with its activities focusing on education, research and promotion of the Indian system of medicine and at the same time linking it with local health issues and finding solutions. Similarly, efforts towards the setting up of an International Maharishi Charak Research Institute, near Haldwani, have proved futile. “The research institute dedicated to Maharishi Charak Danda will only take off after finalising the land,” affirmed Dr Bhardwaj. Meanwhile, the Ayurvedic Department has also requested the Health Department to transfer .047 hectares for setting up the Ayush Gram at Bhawali. The 10 acres, comprising a sanatorium, is in the possession of the Health Department. The government is setting up the Ayush Gram in collaboration with a private company, Emami Private Limited. |
No headway in hit-and-run probe

A large number of people from the Valmiki community gathered at the Valmiki temple to air their resentment over the delay in arresting the persons responsible. They also handed over a memorandum to the police. They have stated that there had some information about the owner of the car and the police needs to investigate this aspect. |
‘Involve schools, sports goods makers to promote winter games’
Mussoorie, January 12 The sports fraternity feels that with the modern infrastructure now in place, the state can take a lead in training players in ice skating and skiing. Eminent sportsperson and Principal of Mussoorie Public School Mukesh Lal was pleased with the fact that Uttarakhand is now on the radar of winter sports. Lal opined that if the government and the Winter Games Federation of India promote winter games at the school level, these could become medal-winning prospects for the country. Lal said schools like
his were eager to send their students for practice to the rink and were ready to pay the nominal amount needed by the authorities for providing services at the rink. Sports manufacturers in the state were also impressed by the newly constructed rink, but were of the view that winter games were in the nascent state in the nation. These need to be promoted in a planned manner, they said. Sports goods manufacturer Vishal Bhatia from Modern Sports House, Dehradun, who provides sports equipment
to schools in Mussoorie, said converting ice-skating and skiing into popular sports would be a herculean task in this cricket-maddened country. Bhatia felt that schools and sport goods manufacturers should be involved in the promotion of sports. Otherwise, games without too much following would die a slow death, he said. |
