Vacations extended: In view of the continued cold wave, the management of St Xavier’s Group of Schools has extended winter vacations up to January 11, a press note said here on Tuesday. St Xavier’s, Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali will re-open on January 12.
House ransacked@@Mohali: Jewellery, cash and household items worth Rs 2 lakh were stolen from a house in Phase V here on Wednesday. According to the police, Jagdish Chand and members of his family had gone to Garhshankar due to the death of his brother. His tenant, Rajesh Kumar, had also gone out for a few days, but he returned to see the locks broken and the house ransacked. Immediately he informed the owner of the house. — OC

Electoral rolls: The final photo-electoral rolls of all the 90 assembly constituencies of the state have been published. Announcing this here today, Sumita Misra, Chief Electoral Officer, said the photo-electoral rolls had been prepared taking January 1,2011, as the qualifying date as directed by the Election Commission of India. These electoral rolls were initially published on November 10, 2010 to invite claims and objections from the public. The electoral rolls had been finally published after taking necessary action on the claims and objections filed. Misra appealed to the electorate to check their name, photo and other details in the voter lists and in case of any discrepancy, contact the Electoral Registering Officer.

Man’s body found: The body of a man was recovered from a canal in Trikuta Nagar here on Tuesday. The police said the deceased appeared to be in his thirties. There were no injury marks on the body which was taken to the GMCH for a post-mortem. The police has initiated inquest proceedings.

2 killed, two injured in mishaps: Two persons were killed and two others injured in road accidents in the Kashmir valley since Tuesday. An electricity lineman, Ghulam Mohammad Mir, was killed when he was hit by a Mahindra Scorpio on the main road at Nadihal in Bandipore district. The Scorpio driver was arrested, the police said. Three persons, including two women, were injured when a Maruti car, an SRTC bus, a Mahindra Scorpio and a truck collided on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway at Numbal in the Awantipora area of Pulwama district, about 30 km from here. However, the injured Maruti car driver, Ali Mohammad Khan, a resident of the Kulgam area, succumbed to his injuries in the Bone and Joints Hospital, Srinagar. The two injured women were admitted to the SMHS Hospital here. Youth shot dead during Army ambush: A youth was shot dead during an ambush by the Army troops in Kupwara district, officials said here on Wednesday. “Troops of the 18 Rashtriya Rifles had laid an ambush in the forest area of Warnav in Lolab, 120 km from here, on Tuesday night. “They noticed some suspicious movement and opened fire, resulting in the death of the youth,” Muneer Ahmad Khan, DIG, north Kashmir said. He said the Army reported the matter to the police and efforts were being made to identify the deceased. “We called residents from nearby villages but no one has identified the deceased so far,” Khan added.

DM tells officials to set up bonfires: The District Magistrate (DM) of Udham Singh Nagar, Dr BVRC Purshottam, has directed executive officers of all the civic bodies to make proper bonfire arrangements at public places in view of the prevailing cold wave conditions in hill areas. The district has been reeling under cold wave conditions. He has also asked the officials to initiate steps for distribution of blankets among the poor.
