Non-functional traffic lights add to commuters’ woes

Tribune News Service

Patiala, January 2
Non-functional traffic lights in the city have become a nuisance for the commuters while it also results in chaos and accidents across the city. With thick fog cover in the evenings, commuters have to face lots of inconvenience, especially those passing from the city to other districts.

The traffic lights at Punjabi University remain non-functional for the major part of the year and the lights which are fixed to regulate maximum traffic management near bus stand, Sherawala Gate, Thapar University roundabout, Fountain Chowk and various other prominent positions across the city, also remain non-functional.

Officials of the Patiala traffic police admit that due to sudden power failure the traffic lights are switched off, causing accidents, which prove fatal sometimes.

“Though we have deputed our staff at these crucial places, our staff face lots of hardships with the traffic lights remaining non-functional in many parts of the city, as we have VIP duties and other responsibilities as well,” they added.

Officials say that in the absence of traffic signals, motorists try to cross the traffic junctions from every side, ignoring all traffic rules and safety measures.

“Many accidents happen almost everyday and though many senior politicians and officers regularly visit the university, no one has ever tried to either get the traffic lights repaired outside the university premises or get a round-the-clock traffic policeman deputed,” claimed a shopkeeper opposite the Punjabi University market. “Lives of students are also at risk,” he added.

Sources confirmed that due to shortage of staff with the traffic police, the police find it difficult to post cops wherever there was power failure or snag with the traffic lights.

“On Wednesday night, neither traffic lights in the city were functional nor was any policeman deputed. I avoided a collision at Shera Wala Gate and Lehal Colony lights where heavy traffic was moving at a high speed,” claimed Deepinder Singh, a resident of Sewak Colony.

Patiala municipal corporation Commissioner MS Narang told the TNS that he would look into the matter. “Whenever we get complaint we rectify the problem,” he said.
