KU Exams: DAV students get top positions

Ambala, December 31
Students of DAV College, Ambala City, achieved the top three positions in Kurukshetra University in MCom (second semester) examination declared today. College principal CK Yadav told Madhvi got the first position by securing 952 marks out of 1,200, while Manpreet Kaur and Nidhi got the second and third position, respectively. — OC

Illegal religious structures razed

Kalka, December 31
Continuing its anti-encroachment drive, the local administration yesterday razed three small temples here.

The team, along with the police force razed illegal structures, as the structures had been constructed on the government land, said the official sources.— OC

Rally against social evils

Patiala, December 31
A rally against social evils was organised here on Tuesday by NCC cadets of the 5 Punjab Battalion NCC, Patiala. The cadets, while attending 10-day annual training camp at the Army area, Patiala, organised an anti-social evils awareness rally in the city.

The cadets participated in the rally with different banners and placards with various social themes. The rally was flagged off by Camp Commandant Col Sukhjeet Singh, Commanding Officer of the 5 Punjab Battalion NCC, Patiala.

Major Harbans Singh Nagi, Major Ashok Verma, Capt Ved Parkash Sharma, Capt Sandeep Mahajan and Capt Bikramjeet Singh Sandhu along with Lt Balwinder Paul Singh, Lt Dharam Pal and NCC officers Surinder Kumar and Avtar Singh were also present.

Seminar on women’s role in history

Fatehgarh Sahib, December 31
A state-level seminar on “Women’s role in history” was organised at the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College during the martyrdom day of younger Sahibzada of Guru Gobind Singh and Mata Gujri.

Former SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur said women were symbol of social development.

Lok Sabha member and president of SAD women wing, Paramjit Kaur Gulshan while speaking on the occasion urged people to eradicate female foeticide and other social evils. She asked women to unite against all evils that prevail in society and also to uplift and empower rural women.— TNS

Residents irked over potholes
Accidents on the rise due to engineering faults

Potholes on various roads has once again irked residents of various localities of Rajpura, who have been complaining since long to get these roads repaired.Situation gets worst during monsoon season, as vehicles get stuck up causing traffic chaos.

Besides traffic jam on major roads of the city due to encroachments, roads leading to civil hospital, bus stand and to the main market have developed potholes that have not been repaired since long.

Residents rue that accidents are also on the rise here due to engineering faults.

“The new car of my son-in-law developed some problems after it got stuck in the potholes of our locality,” said Sampat Kumar Sharma, a shopkeeper at civil hospital road.

Besides, elderly people, too, face problems while walking on these ill maintained roads, he added.

road, Bhogla road, road between city police station and civil hospital have developed deep potholes causing several accidents.

Mohinder Seghal, Municipal Councillor of Ward No 11 said the road leading to Sheetal Colony in his ward is worst.

“The road will be re-laid in the coming months. Tender for the cement release has been passed and now work would start soon. An estimated cost of Rs 7 lakh is expected for relaying,” said the municipal councillor.

Parveen Chhabra, president, Municipal Council, Rajpura, said “work order” of all broken roads has been issued and would be completed before February.

“The repair work was stopped a few days ago as the temperature came down due to rains. The construction work didn’t yield good results these days and the work has been stopped,” he said.

Meanwhile, he assured the residents that roads under the Municipal Council limits would be repaired soon.

Rally against polio

A motorcycle rally to spread awareness against polio disease, started from Chandigarh to Goa, was welcomed at Dera Bassi by Rotary club members.A function was organised here in which Rotarian Bhupinder Saini and Vipin Thaman and councillors participated.

The two-member motorcycle rally was launched from Chandigarh and it would reach Goa after covering various places like Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, Banaras, Kolkata, Bhuvneshwar, Visakhapatnam, Vijaywada, Chennai, Kanyakumari, Puducherry and Trivendram.

Members of the rally Gaurav Gupta and Deepak Sharma addressed the function and said this 25-day rally would cover the distance of 7,600 km.

Dera Bassi SMO Dr Meena Hardeep Singh said though India now has a few polio patients, but it’s a tough job to identify patients and eradicate the disease from its roots.

4 vehicles stolen

Nanak Singh, a resident of Sector 66, Mohali, in his complaint to the police said his Bajaj Chetak scooter was stolen from the parking lot of Sadar Bazaar in Sector 19. Nanak Singh told he came to the Sadar Bazaar for shopping.

In another incident, Sanjiv Sherawat of NAC in Mani Majra reported to the police that his Indigo car was stolen from outside his house. A case was registered at the Mani Majra police station.

Similarly, Inderpal Singh, a resident of Sector 68, Mohali, reported to the police that unidentified persons stolen his Hero Honda, which was parked in the parking lot of the ISBT-43. Sharan Kumar Kanojia, a resident of Sector 38, also lodged a complaint with the police that his scooter was stolen from his house last night. A case was registered at the Sector 39 police station.

Snatching

Jyoti Devi, a resident of Sector 52, complained to the police alleging that a pedestrian snatched her bag containing Rs 600 and other documents near her residence yesterday. The police has registered a case of snatching at the Sector 36 police station.

Theft at house

Zirakpur, December 31
Thieves decamped with jewellery worth lakhs and cash after breaking into a house at Harmilap Nagar, Baltana, here today. The owner of the house, Navneet Singla, said he had lodged a complaint with the police.

According to Naveent, he along with his family went to relative’s house in the same area last night. When he returned in the morning, he found that the lock of the main door was broken. The owner claimed that cash worth ` 12,000 and jewellery worth lakhs were missing. — TNS

Punjab spinners restrict M’rashtra

Excellent bowling spell by right arm leg spinner Sandeep Singh (four for 48) helped Punjab to restrict Maharashtra in the quarterfinals of the Vijay Merchant Trophy being held at Palakkad (Kerala).After winning the toss, Maharashtra decided to bat first and scored 267 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 100 overs at the end of day’s play.

Maharashtra innings was strengthened by its opener southpaw Vijay Zol, who scored a scintillating century (100 off 152 balls) studded with 17 boundaries.

He was associated in a 71-run opening stand with Jay Pande (27).

The stand was broken by Punjab skipper Karan Kaila.

The other notable contributions came from Abhishek Rao (55) off 157 balls studded with seven boundaries and Kazi Shams Huzama (49) off 82 balls inclusive of 10 boundaries.

Kazi and Rao put on a 76 runs partnership for the 7th wicket before Kazi was caught by Anmolpreet Singh off right arm leg spinner Sandeep Singh with the team’s total reading 244 for seven in 92.5 overs.

Punjab spinners kept on pegging through out the day and were instrumental for all the eight dismissals.

Sandeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers, as he scalped four wickets giving away only 48 runs.

Arpit Singh Pannu two for 74 and Karan Kaila two for 94 were other wicket-takers.
