Rally against social evils

Residents irked over potholes
Rajpura, December 31
Besides traffic jam on major roads of the city due to encroachments, roads leading to civil hospital, bus stand and to the main market have developed potholes that have not been repaired since long. Residents rue that accidents are also on the rise here due to engineering faults. “The new car of my son-in-law developed some problems after it got stuck in the potholes of our locality,” said Sampat Kumar Sharma, a shopkeeper at civil hospital road. Besides, elderly people, too, face problems while walking on these ill maintained roads, he added. The roads leading to the ITI Chowk, Under Bridge road, Electricity Board road, Bhogla road, road between city police station and civil hospital have developed deep potholes causing several accidents. Mohinder Seghal, Municipal Councillor of Ward No 11 said the road leading to Sheetal Colony in his ward is worst. “The road will be re-laid in the coming months. Tender for the cement release has been passed and now work would start soon. An estimated cost of Rs 7 lakh is expected for relaying,” said the municipal councillor. Parveen Chhabra, president, Municipal Council, Rajpura, said “work order” of all broken roads has been issued and would be completed before February. “The repair work was stopped a few days ago as the temperature came down due to rains. The construction work didn’t yield good results these days and the work has been stopped,” he said. Meanwhile, he assured the residents that roads under the Municipal Council limits would be repaired soon. |

Rally against polio
Dera Bassi, December 31 The two-member motorcycle rally was launched from Chandigarh and it would reach Goa after covering various places like Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, Banaras, Kolkata, Bhuvneshwar, Visakhapatnam, Vijaywada, Chennai, Kanyakumari, Puducherry and Trivendram. Members of the rally Gaurav Gupta and Deepak Sharma addressed the function and said this 25-day rally would cover the distance of 7,600 km. Dera Bassi SMO Dr Meena Hardeep Singh said though India now has a few polio patients, but it’s a tough job to identify patients and eradicate the disease from its roots. |
4 vehicles stolen
Chandigarh, December 31 In another incident, Sanjiv Sherawat of NAC in Mani Majra reported to the police that his Indigo car was stolen from outside his house. A case was registered at the Mani Majra police station. Similarly, Inderpal Singh, a resident of Sector 68, Mohali, reported to the police that unidentified persons stolen his Hero Honda, which was parked in the parking lot of the ISBT-43. Sharan Kumar Kanojia, a resident of Sector 38, also lodged a complaint with the police that his scooter was stolen from his house last night. A case was registered at the Sector 39 police station. Punjab spinners restrict M’rashtra
Chandigarh, December 31 Maharashtra innings was strengthened by its opener southpaw Vijay Zol, who scored a scintillating century (100 off 152 balls) studded with 17 boundaries. He was associated in a 71-run opening stand with Jay Pande (27). The stand was broken by Punjab skipper Karan Kaila. The other notable contributions came from Abhishek Rao (55) off 157 balls studded with seven boundaries and Kazi Shams Huzama (49) off 82 balls inclusive of 10 boundaries. Kazi and Rao put on a 76 runs partnership for the 7th wicket before Kazi was caught by Anmolpreet Singh off right arm leg spinner Sandeep Singh with the team’s total reading 244 for seven in 92.5 overs. Punjab spinners kept on pegging through out the day and were instrumental for all the eight dismissals. Sandeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers, as he scalped four wickets giving away only 48 runs. Arpit Singh Pannu two for 74 and Karan Kaila two for 94 were other wicket-takers.
