Phagwara, December 15
A minor altercation among five pick-pockets resulted in two of them being killed by the other three.

The trio killed their two partners using bricks and rods and then threw the bodies in a gutter before setting them on fire.

The Phagwara police today succeeded in unfolding the mystery of the blind murders of these two persons and the case was solved with the arrest of the three killers under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the IPC.

Kapurthala SSP Sukhminder Singh Maan, while confirming the arrests, told The Tribune here that the remains of some unidentified persons were found from a sewerage gutter at a deserted place on the old Civil Hospital premises on the Phagwara-Banga road on December 10 evening.

The remains later turned out to be the burnt body parts of two persons and the police sent the pieces of bones to the Amritsar lab for examination.

The deceased were identified as Chand of Palahi Gate, Phagwara, and Harmesh, alias Meshi, of Tamakoo Kuttan, Phagwara.

SSP Maan said the police registered a case on the complaint lodged by Phagwara resident Ashwini Kumar on December 11 and started investigations.

The SSP said, on a tip-off, Phagwara city police station SHO Amrik Singh Chahal solved the murder mystery.

The three killers were identified as Manjit, alias Billa, of Kot Rani village; Inderjit Singh, alias Jeeta, of Daddal Mohalla, Phagwara, and Avinash Chander of Cherra village.

The SSP said the three killers, presently residing in the old Civil Hospital building, and the two deceased, were merely pick-pockets and were working together at various places, including the bus stand, railway station, in and around the town and even small fairs.

He said all these five criminals had fixed a deserted place on the old Civil Hospital premises on the Phagwara-Banga road as a meeting point.

The SSP said the deceased had borrowed some money from the killers and were not returning it to them. On the night of December 3, they all met at the fixed place and had a drink together.

During the drink session, the killers demanded their money back, but they refused to return it. All of them then indulged in a scuffle and the accused attacked them with bricks and rods, following which both Chand and Meshi died on the spot.

DSP Sandeep Sharma said the accused threw the bodies of both the deceased in a dry sewerage gutter and covered them with dry grass and old clothes and set them on fire.

SHO Amrik Singh Chahal said the arrested persons were produced before the Judicial Magistrate who sent them in police remand for one day.
