MGNREGA Schemes
DC inspects projects

Bassi Pathana, December 6
Yashveer Mahajan, Deputy Commissioner, along with a team of Rural Development officials, visited various project sites under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA) Schemes here today.

He inspected the quality of work and interacted with workers. He enquired from them about the wage and the facilities being provided by the village panchayat.

He said under the MGNREGA scheme Rs 32.90 lakh had been released for Bassi Pathana and out of this Rs 25.14 lakh had been spent on various development works in different villages. He directed Block Development Panchayat Officer (BDPO) to ensure that work was completed in time and quality was also maintained.

He warned incase of any bungling strict action would be initiated. Later, he inspected the completed works like construction of road to cremation ground and digging of village pond at Mehdoodan village.

He inspected the ongoing work of drainage of sullage water to be completed at the cost of Rs 10.33 lakh at Ladpuri village.

Paramjeet Kaur, village sarpanch, briefed the DC that Rs 4 lakh had been spent on the project.

He inspected the drainage of sewer water project at Talwara village to be completed at the cost of Rs 11.44 lakh.

He also visited Dhunda village and Nogawan to inspect the work of making smart cards by organising camps in these villages under the National Security Insurance Yojna for BPL (Below Poverty Line) families.

While talking to mediapersons he said there were 10,453 BPL families and smart cards were being made of these families by organising camps.

He said under these schemes five members of the BPL family get free medical treatment of Rs 30,000 for one year.

Sukhbir Badal, Deputy Chief Minister, has directed all Deputy Commissioners to inspect the ongoing development projects to complete them on time.

Panchayat land encroached upon
Authorities fail to take action

Kalka, December 6
Due to the callous attitude of the Block Development and Panchayat officer (BDPO) of Pinjore Block Panchayat land worth lakhs of rupees is being encroached upon at Guga Mari Colony of Tagra Kali Ram, Kalka. Colony residents alleged that some of the inhabitants of the colony had illegally encroached upon the Panchayat land.

They also alleged that Prem Sharma, a colony resident, who is working with the forest department, Pinjore, had recently encroached upon the panchayat land by constructing boundary wall. They further alleged that despite repeated requests to the BDPO office during the construction work of the boundary wall, the authorities concerned didn’t take any step to stop the illegal construction work.

They further alleged that some of the residents had illegally constructed structures.

Jaipur singers to perform in Heritage fest

Kalka, December 6
Renowned ghazal singers Ustad Ahmed Hussain and Mohammed Hussain from Jaipur will perform in the fifth Pinjore Heritage Festival being organised from December 17 to December 19 at Pinjore Gardens.

Haryana Tourism, cultural evenings would be hosted on all three days. On the inaugural day, the cultural teams, including Sufiana with dance troupe by Zila Khan. — OC

3 gangs of burglars busted, 10 held

Chandigarh, December 6
The Chandigarh Police claims to have busted three gangs involved in burglary and vehicle theft, with the arrest of 10 miscreants, including five juveniles, here today.Shockingly, one of the gangs consisted only of juveniles, five in number, who allegedly struck at religious places. According to inspector Bakshish Singh, SHO of the Sector 31 police station, all five members were aged between 13 and 16 years.

“Three of them are school-going children,” he said, adding that the boys had committed burglary at the Sector 47 gurdwara and the Hallo Majra temple.

They had gathered to distribute the stolen money in the jungle between the Kali Bari temple and the railway track when the police nabbed them, along with the stolen money, which was ` 3,300.

The police also recovered an iron rod, which they had used during the crime, from them.

The second success to the police came when a team headed by SI Harpal Singh arrested a gang of three burglars, Sonu Rana, alias Kalu, a resident of Sector 52, Gaurav of Sector 56 and Shammi Kumar of Ram Darbar.

The accused were involved in the burglary of computer parts from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 56, last month. The police had recovered the stolen articles from them.

The police also nabbed two vehicle lifters, Salman Khan and Nirmal Kumar, residents of Burail village, during a naka on the road separating Sectors 45 and 46 last night.

The miscreants were riding a motorcycle when they were stopped by the police. On being questioned, they produced fake documents of the vehicle.

They later confessed that they had stolen two motorcycles (CHO3V-1044 and CHO3J-8028) from the city. They had interchanged the number plates to dodge the police.

The police also recovered three more scooters (Bajaj Caliber- PB65B-7749, Bajaj Chetak- PB27-2093 and LML Vespa- DL4SP-9248) and one motorcycle (Hero Honda- UA06C-8950) from them.

The police added that Nirmal Kumar was also involved in many cases of vehicle lifting and cases had earlier been registered against him. Both accused were said to be drug addicts.

Gold, cash stolen

Burglars struck in a locked house at Sector 40 here and took away 750 grams of gold and ` 5,000 in cash. The victim, Mahi Pal Mehta, said he was away to Delhi when the thieves struck.

On his return, he found the lock of the main door broken. The thieves had broken the safe open and taken away the gold and cash from it. The police registered a case on the basis of the complaint.

Snatched

Rashmi Gupta, a resident of Sector 22, reported that two persons on a Pulsar motorcycle (CH04J-1599) sped away after snatching her bag, containing Rs 15,000, a gold chain and important documents, near the petrol station in front of Aroma hotel in Sector 22 here on Sunday.

Aarti of Sector 21 was another victim of two motorcycle-borne snatchers near the Picaddilly traffic lights. Riding a silver-coloured Pulsar motorcycle, they snatched her purse, containing ` 25,000, an ATM card and a mobile phone. The police registered two separate cases.

Burglary

Surinder Singh reported to the police that someone stole Rs 93,240, a laptop and two ATM cards from SCO 2419-2420, Sector 22, on Sunday night. The police started investigations after registering a case.

Thieves leave booty behind

Zirakpur, December 6
Two thieves managed to flee after leaving a stolen car at Sunny Enclave here last night. The car was stolen by them from Sector 39, Chandigarh. However, the police had identified two accused Aslam and Raja, both residents of Mani Majra.

According to the police, they got the information that culprits were on their way to Zirakpur from Chandigarh. A police team laid a naka on the Zirakpur-Kalka intersection and was checking the vehicles.

During the checking they stopped the car bearing registration number CH-03A-0331, but the culprits fled.

While chasing them, the accused entered the residential area, where they left the car and fled, the police added. The police said a case had been registered.

Couple hurt

Kalka (OC): A couple was injured on NH-22, near Sheranwali Mata Temple, today. According to information available, Rajesh, a resident of Kalka along with his wife Seema were returning from Chandigarh on scooter. When they reached Pinjore, the scooter skidded on the road due to some stray bulls on the road.

The couple sustained multiple injuries and was given treatment in some private clinic at Pinjore.

Gang of motorcycle thieves busted

Mohali, December 6
The police has busted a gang of motorcycle thieves. Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police GPS Bhullar said Parminder Singh, alias Sonu, and Shamshad, alias Raju, have been arrested and two stolen motorcycles have been recovered from them.

During interrogation, the police found that Parminder was a matriculate and was working as an electrician.

He used to prepare duplicate keys.

The other suspect Shamshad was involved in criminal cases seven years ago and was booked under various Sections at Malerkotla, Khanna and Balongi.

The suspects have also admitted that they used to steal vehicles with duplicate keys from Apni Mandis.

Two stolen Maruti cars have also been recovered from them. One of the recovered cars was stolen from Phase VIII on October 13 and a case under Section 379 of the IPC had been registered at the Phase-8 Police Station.

In another incident Harvir Singh, alias Raju, a resident of Morinda, was found possessing stolen Mahindra Scorpio car.

The police found three fake registration numbers (PB-03N-4357, CH04J-0447 and PB 27A-0032) in the vehicle.

A case under Sections 379 and 472 of the IPC has been registered at the Matour Police Station. Further investigations are on.

Krishan Khatri guides DAV-8 to victory

Krishan Khatri’s excellent knock of 70 runs helped DAV-8 beat Tau Devi Lal Cricket Academy by 130 runs in the Leslie Gordon Carver Inter-Academy U-17 Cricket Tournament held at DAV, Sector 8, here today.

Electing to bat first, DAV team scored 243 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their stipulated 40 overs. Kulbeer 54, Krishan Khatri 70, Yudveer 14 and Pradeep Kumar 46 were the main scorers for DAV team. For Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Karanveer Goyal was the pick of the bowlers, as he scalped three wickets for 35 runs. Kishtij (2 for 53) and Avinesh (1 for 39) were the other wicket takers.

Chasing a victory target of 244 runs, Tau Devi Lal Academy failed to face the stiff bowling spell and were bundled out for 113 runs in 28 overs. Lokesh 37 and Yagnik Khandelia 20 were the only batsmen who were able to face the tight bowling with some resistance. For DAV, Sumit Hooda (2 for 16), Rakesh Rawat (2 for 26), Saprash Guglani (3 for 29) and Shikhar (3 for 17) were the wicket takers.

In the second match of the day, LIC-26 defeated Stepping Stones School Club by 101 runs at the match held on LIC ground, Sector 26.

Batting first LIC-26 scored 253 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their stipulated 40 overs. Kehsav Verma 35, Ajay Kumar, who were able to build a partnership of 121 for the second wicket, scored 82, Rohit Verma 25, Anil Kumar 28 and Navesh 36 were the main scorers. For Stepping Stones, Piyush (2 for 66), Kamalpreet (2 for 25) and Balwinder (1 for 40) were the main wicket takers.

In reply, Stepping Stones-37 were all out for 152 runs in just 38.3 overs. Davinder Singh 40, Piyush 22 no, Shyam Kumar 37 and Saiyam 13 were the main scorers.

For LIC-26, Ravi Kumar (3 for 34), Anish Ahmad (3 for 9) and Anil kumar (2 for 23) were the main wicket takers.

Public Sports Club retain powerlifting trophy

The Public Sports Club, Sector 56, Chandigarh, retained the trophy by scoring 197 points in the 10th Sub-Junior (boys) and 18th Junior Men Chandigarh State Power-lifting Championship that concluded at Sector 42 here late last night.

The Chandigarh Power-lifting Association team secured the runners-up position by getting 72 points while the Weightlifting Coaching Centre, Sector 42, finished 3rd by obtaining 35 points. Amrinder Singh of the Public Sports Club created new record in dead-lift by lifting 170 kg to 180 kg.

Victor wins golf meet
City player finishes one stroke behind

Chandigarh, December 6
Victor of AGC Golf Club, Jalandhar, clinched the trophy with a two-day score of 148 in the 11th Punjab State Amateur Golf Championship that concluded at the Ranjitgarh Golf Club in Phillaur on Sunday.

A stroke behind in the 0-9 handicap category was Tarundeep Chadha, who had to be content with the runners-up title.

Mahesh Kumar finished third. Rohit Chaudhary, director of the PPA, Phillaur, and president of the host club, won the title in the 10-18 handicap categories with Yurinder Singh and Amrinder Singh finishing second and third, respectively.

JS Krooner was declared the winner in the nett category. Navneet Chabra and Gurjeet Singh occupied the second and third slot, respectively.

Viren Thapar clinched the U-14 age-group title. Sarthak Kohli and Khushman Raj finished first and second runners-up, respectively.

There was also a competition for children who had started golf six months ago. They played only four balls to have a feel of the golf course.

Mokshi emerged the winner with Shuhobhit and Mehul Tuli at second and third slot.

SK Sharma, ADGP, Punjab, and president of the Punjab Golf Association, who gave away prizes said in view of the large number of golfers coming up in Jalandhar and nearby areas, the Punjab Golf Association will hold a golf tournament at Jalandhar in February.

Fatehgarh Sahib Deputy Commissioner Yashvir Mahajan presided over the ceremony.

More than 100 golfers from all the districts of Punjab took part in the two-day championship, which was teed off by Rohit Chaudhary, director PPA, on Saturday.

18-year-old Tanya turns professional

She is barely 18. But she is all set to set the Panchkula and Chandigarh greens on fire when the Hero Honda Women’s Professional Golf Tour embarks on its fifth and sixth legs from December 9 at the Panchkula Golf Club.

The “golf doll” is none other than Tanya Wadhwa who has decided to join the professional ranks at the age of 18 years and three months.

Tanya, who came to Delhi to play as an amateur in the Hero Honda Women’s Indian Open, which concluded at the DLF Golf and Country Club recently, told the Women's Golf Association of India (WGAI) that she would stay in India, turn professional and play in the remaining legs of the Hero Honda Women’s Professional Golf Tour over the next four months.

At the age of 15, Tanya became the youngest player to win a professional golf championship in Texas in 2008. She is undergoing training in the USA.

The 2003 Junior World Champion and the US Kids World Champion is now poised to make a mark in women’s professional golf. This child golf prodigy has a magnificent track record having finished 22nd in the overall ranking of the EMaar MGF Ladies Masters, a European tour event, in 2007, in which she also emerged as the best amateur.

Tanya is ecstatic about making her debut on the Hero Honda Women's Professional Golf Tour in Panchkula and Chandigarh, where she is eager to play with great players like Simi Mehra, Sharmila Nicollet and Saaniya Sharma.

Indian Navy beat Army Green

Indian Navy defeated Army Green by 2-1 goals in the 58th Inter Services Hockey Championship being held at 3 BRD, Air Force Station, here today.SQ Faheem Khan scored the first goal for Indian Navy in the 20th minute while seaman Bharat Singh scored the second goal through a penalty corner in the 62nd minute. SPR Poovanna scored the only goal for Army Green through a penalty stroke in the 57th minute.

In the second match of the day between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Army Red, the IAF was leading by 2-1 until half time. The IAF team won the match 7-2.

Four teams — Army Red, Army Green, Indian Navy and IAF — are participating in the championship being played on the league-cum-knockout basis in the four-day event. The matches are being played in the newly constructed synthetic poly grass astro-turf ground which is the first of its kind in the IAF.

Major-Gen SD Cruz of Western Command, Chandimandir, inaugurated the championship, in which the participating teams presented a colourful march past.

Pargat Singh, former Indian hockey captain and Director, Sports, Punjab, and JWO Baldev Singh (retd), who represented India in the 1989 Barcelona Olympics, were also present. An Army band performed on the occasion.

City pugilists strike gold

The city pugilists won one gold, six silvers and six bronze medals during the the recently-held 56th National School Games 2010-11 in the U-14, U-17 and U-19 categories for boys at Dehradun (Uttarakhand).

PS Brar, state sports organiser, education department, said Gurmail Singh from GMSSS-21 and Bhagwant Singh accompanied the team as manager and coach, respectively.
