Boy dies in road mishap
Kalka, December1 The auto-rikshaw in an attempt to over take some vehicle rammed into another car from the opposite side and turned turtle. Subsequently, Luv sustained severe head injuries. He was rushed to E.S.I Hospital of HMT, from there he was referred to Pinjore hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The deceased was a resident of Kalka and his mother also suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to CHC, Kalka, from where she was referred to GMCH, Sector-32,

Villagers accused of mining sand from common land
Dera Bassi, December 1 They have written to the district mining officer and demanded action against the accused. In their complaint, the farmers have stated that the ownership right of the agriculture land belonging to Bhankarpur village was decided by the Mohali ADC (D) in March, 2010, and farmers had filed an appeal against the decision with the director, panchyat and rural department, Punjab. The farmers have further alleged that some villagers have been selling sand from the common land, which falls on the Ghaggar bed, in connivance with officials concerned. Copies of the complaint have been sent to the Mohali Deputy Commissioner, the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, and the Dera Bassi SDM. Meanwhile, district mining officer Harjinder Singh Pannu has said he has received a complaint from some residents of Bhankarpur village and an inquiry is on. Action will be taken after the completion of the inquiry, he added. |

3 held with stolen mobikes, cell phones
Chandigarh, December 1 During interrogation, Rinku confessed to have stolen four motorcycles and two scooters from different parts of the city and commit snatchings. He is a drug-addict and was never arrested in any incident earlier. In a separate incident, DSP (Communications and Police Control Room) Roshan Lal said a patrolling team of the PCR noticed three persons dragging a motorcycle at the Mani Majra motor market on Tuesday night. The police signalled the youths to stop. However, the trio tried to flee leaving the motorcycle there. The police managed to nab two persons, including a juvenile, while their third accomplice fled. The juvenile was sent to the juvenile home while the interrogation of other accused, identified as 19-year-old Nitin, a resident of Bhainsa Tibba, Mani Majra, led to the recovery of another stolen motorcycle (CH-04-F-7385), which was stolen from Panchkula. The police said more incidents of thefts and snatchings were likely to be solved after further interrogation of the accused.
Contradictory statements
Contrary to the claims of DSP Roshan Lal during a press conference that Nitin was arrested with a stolen motorcycle by the PCR staff, the press release issued by the Chandigarh Police has a different story to tell. It was stated in the release that Laxman Dass, a resident of Mani Majra, had caught Nitin red-handed while stealing his motorcycle (CHP-4327) from the motor market on November 29. The police had arrested the accused after registering a case on Laxman’s complaint, stated the release. On the other hand, the DSP showered praises on his team for apprehending the accused. |

Another accused held in graft case
Chandigarh, December 1 The CBI had registered a case under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act against Varinder and Mahal Chand, superintendent in the Estate Office, on a complaint lodged by Dr Sohan Lal Arora, a resident of Sector 15. Arora had alleged that the Mahal Chand had demanded financial favours from him to issue a no objection certificate. Both the accused were produced in a local court which remanded them in judicial custody. Mahal Chand was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh yesterday. |

2 more auto theft gang members held
Zirakpur, December 1 Earlier, the police had arrested two members of the same gang and recovered three vehicles along with two country-made pistols and seven cartridges from their possession. Zirakpur SHO Yogi Raj said ASI Harbinder Kumar was patrolling near Chhat village when he received a tip-off that suspects were on their way to Chhat village from Sohana. The accused were in a Maruti car that they had stolen from Panchkula, the SHO added. He along with a police team set up a checkpoint near the Chhat bus stand and arrested the accused with the stolen car. The police sources said during interrogation, it was found that they had stolen vehicles from Panchukla and sold these in Uttar Pradesh after preparing fake documents. The sources added that one of the accused had threatened Vichitter Singh, a resident of Panchkula, and fired a gun shot at his house. They were also involved in the robbery of Rs 78,000 belonging to the electricity department from an ex-serviceman while he was returning from Ramgarh, the police sources added. The SHO said the accused were produced in the Dera Bassi court which remanded them in two-day police custody. “We hope to recover a large number of stolen cars from the gang,” he added. |

The registration for these plots was to be done on May 20 when they got to know that the plots purchased were not in the names of the three persons who had sold these to them. Alok Kumar’s medal impetus to 8-ball pool
Chandigarh, December 1 Talking to TNS during his visit to the city today, Arjuna awardee Alok Kumar said that now onwards the youngsters would surely start taking the game seriously. “Undoubtedly, our country has a big number of top players in billiards and we are the best in the world. In snooker also we are doing well at international level. But in pool game, South-Asian countries like Philippines and Taiwan have been dominating, we stand nowhere,” said Alok Kumar. In his course to the podium finish at Guangzhou, Alok has defeated former world champion Efrin Reyes, popularly known as ‘The Magician’ in the circle, in his second match.Remembering the moments, Alok said that playing against ‘The Magician’ was very crucial. “Playing match against him itself is a big thing but the win was really morale boosting,” said Alok. Alok is six times national snooker champion and three times national billiards champion. This year he defeated Pankaj Advani to retain the national billiards champion’s title. Alok has also won the Asian snooker championship in 2004. Besides, he has clinched silver medal in billiards at the Busan Asian Games and bronze medals in the World Snooker Championship (2006) and Indo-Asian Games in 2007. Alok Kumar, who lives in Mandi Gobindgarh (Punjab), said that India lacks specialised pool players. “Largely the snooker and billiards players used to play pool game here. The need of hour is to increase the number of pool tournaments, especially in the northern part of the country to popularise the game. Being the secretary of Punjab Billiards and Snooker Association, we are planning to organise an international tournament in the state to enable the players of this region to watch the top class game,” said the cueist. |

DAV Club drub Carmel Convent
Chandigarh, December 1 The team drubbed Carmel Convent School team by 3-1. Carmel girls opened the account in the second minute through rightwinger Harnoor. Till half time, the score was 1-0 but soon after Carmel girls could not maintain their dominance. DAV girls pumped in three goals in a span of 10 minutes. Namrata struck in 32nd minute. The next two goals came through Aniya and Tarni in 39th and 42nd minutes, respectively. In the second league match of the day, Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, and Saupin’s School, Sector 32, ended in draw with the scoreline 3-3. Saupin’s team was salvaged by rightstriker Neeti by netting three goals. Sacred Heart girls missed several chances in the early minutes. Finally Ivy Rana of the team drew first blood in the 28th minute after dodging two defenders. She shot an angular shot to get the lead. Neeti of Saupin’s produced equaliser in the 32nd minute.
