Abohar
Stir planned for Nov 9:
The Field and Workshop Workers Union have decided to stage a dharna at the office of the executive engineer of the Punjab Water Supply and Sanitation department here on November 9, i.e. Tuesday. While presiding over the meeting of the union at Nehru Park here on Sunday, president Puran Ram said the agitation had earlier been postponed following an assurance that the pending demands related to providing of uniforms and equipments to the field workers would be implemented by November 1 but the officials were now lamenting that the state government had not provided funds for such facilities. 

Girl crushed to death: Amandeep Kaur (18) of the Government Seed Farm Colony here was crushed to death near village Daulatpura on the Abohar-Sriganganagar road by an unidentified four-wheeler, sources said. As per the report lodged with the Khuyiansarwar police station, the victim was returning after plucking kinnow in an orchard located near village Diwankhera. The police is investigating the case. 

Campaign to save soil: ‘Save the Soil Campaign / Bhoomi Bachao Abhiyan’, that was launched by the IFFCO, global leaders in fertiliser production, has given highly encouraging results, claimed Surinder Kumar Jakhar chairman of the cooperative organisation. During an interview at his residence in village Panjkosi on Sunday, he said over the years, crop productivity had reached a plateau despite increase in nutrient usage. This is mainly due to the fact that there is an imbalance between nutrients addition versus removal, latter on the higher side, resulting in widespread multi-nutrient deficiency. This trend needs to be checked on priority basis for ensuring food security for a billion people on sustainable basis.

Sriganganagar
Nirvana Diwas:
The Nirvana Diwas of Lord Mahavir, twenty-fourth and last Tirthankara of the Jains, was observed in the twin districts of Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh on Sunday. While addressing the gathering SS Jain Sabha in Hanumangarh, Sadhvi Swati explained that according to Jain philosophy, all Tirthankaras were human beings but they attained a state of perfection or enlightenment through meditation and self-realisation. They are the gods of the Jains, she observed.

Electrocuted: A farmer, Sat Pal (35), was reportedly electrocuted when he incidentally touched an electric pole in his fields at Bithwana village, 3 km from here, on Saturday. The mishap took place when he was reportedly channelising the water that had accumulated around the above pole.
