Father, son held with
1-kg opium
Rajpura, November 4 The accused have been identified as Rajinder and his son, Ishant, both residents of Ambala. They were travelling in a car towards Ludhiana when they were stopped at a police naka near Chamaru village on the Delhi-Amritsar national highway. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. The police said they were smuggling opium from Madhya Pradesh to sell it in Ludhiana. |

MC Councillors to peruse case in SC
Kalka, November 4 On a PIL, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had recently quashed the notification of the state government to include the Kalka, Pinjore Muncipal Committees in the Panchkula Corporation. While addressing the meeting, Bansal said the Municipal Councillors of Pinjore had decided to go to any extent over this issue. They were even ready to fight in the Supreme Court for their rights. |

Sampla murder case accused held
Bassi Pathana, November 4 It is worth mentioning that a local cloth merchant Madan Lal had gone to the nearby Sampla village for the recovery of his outstanding dues from one Malkiat Kaur and she called her relative Sukha to pay him the money. Instead of giving him the money, Sukha, who was in inebriated condition had a scuffle with the cloth merchant, when the woman tried to intervene, he stabbed the cloth merchant as well as the woman, who died on the spot. |
Councillor’s husband acquitted in rape case
Chandigarh, November 4 The court, however, sentenced the other accused Vijay to rigorous imprisonment of seven years and imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on him. A case was registered against Harmail Singh and Vijay on May 20, 2009, at the Mani Majra police station for raping a minor girl. The victim had alleged that Harmail had also made an obscene MMS of her in connivance with Vijay, who was a resident of Indira Colony. After the FIR, Harmail filed a bail petition before the trial court, but it was declined. Thereafter, he sought bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, but his application was dismissed. The trial court then issued non-bailable warrants against him, following which he surrendered before the court. The court had framed charges against Harmail and Vijay on October 15. However, on October 18, the victim turned hostile and stated that “this” Harmail Singh was not “that” Harmail, who was involved in the crime. During the trial, the victim's father had also claimed that when he had gone to the office of the then DSP (East) PK Dhawan with his daughter and others requesting him take action in the matter, instead of taking any action, the DSP asked him to take ` 25,000 to take his complaint back. |

Engg student killed in mishap
Zirakpur, November 4 The deceased, identified as Harmanpreet Singh, the only child of his parents, was a student of an engineering college in Sangrur. Investigating officer Ramesh Singh said the mishap took place at around 12.30 pm when Harmanpreet, a resident of Anand Vihar, was on his way to his house on his motorcycle. He fell down and was crushed under the tyre of the truck. The victim was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, where he was declared brought dead. The truck driver managed to flee from the spot leaving the vehicle behind, the investigating officer said. The post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow. Baltana police post in charge ASI Anup Singh said a case had been registered against the truck driver. Meanwhile, area residents have urged the administration to deploy traffic cops on internal roads as six youths have lost their lives in the past one month.

2 arrested for hoarding sugar
Chandigarh, November 4 Police said Gian Chand, inspector, UT Food and Supplies Department, filed a complaint alleging that 23 bags of sugar, including 18 of one quintal and five bags each of 50 kg, were recovered from the residence of Satish Kumar, a resident of Mani Majra. Similarly, 50 bags of sugar, including 120 of one quintal each and 40 bags of 50 kilograms were sized from Balwinder Singh from his residence in Shanti Nagar, Mani Majra. Chandigarh, November 4 With the win, the Punjab team got five points, whereas Saurashtra earned naught. Chasing a victory target of 182 in their second innings, Punjab scored 186 for four in 48.3 overs. After completing a five-wicket haul in Saurashtra’s first innings, debutant left arm spinner Yogesh Kumar again wrecked havoc with his deadly bowling spell to claim six for 66, restricting rivals on 258 all out in 101 overs in their second innings. Saurashtra, which conceded 76-run lead, lost three wickets for 72. P Solanki helped the team with his unbeaten century (115 not out), studded with 16 boundaries and two sixes. The other batsman, who showed defiance, was BH Joshi (45).
