Biggest raid against sweetmeat makers
8,000 kg of sweets destroyed

In the biggest raid of the ongoing drive against sweetmeat makers, a team of the UT Administration today destroyed about 8,000 kg of sweets and bakery items from five factories preparing sweets in unhygienic conditions in Mani Majra.

Sale of crackers suspended in Sec 22
Vendors fail to meet safety guidelines
Chandigarh, November 3
The UT administration today suspended the sale of firecrackers in Sector 22 till the stall owners met the mandatory safety conditions laid down in the licences issued to them by the Estate Office.

CBSE yet to decide
Chandigarh, November 3
Eight months after it first issued a show-cause notice to Sacred Heart School in Sector 26, seeking an explanation on the alleged arbitrary expulsion of Ruchika Girhotra, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is yet to decide on the matter. Ruchika had committed suicide two years after she had been molested by SPS Rathore, a serving Haryana cadre IPS officer, on August 12, 1990.

The Chandigarh Police today released a sketch of one of the robbers who allegedly looted a Sector 35 resident at gunpoint on Tuesday. SHO of the Sector 36 police station Anokh Singh said the victim, Shubash Bajaj, along with five eyewitnesses was called to the police station to reconstruct the events. The statements of the eyewitnesses were corroborated and the entire scene was reconstructed.

Infants turn ‘serious’ after DPT shot

The condition of five babies deteriorated after they were administered the injection of DPT here today. The babies were identified as Sohani, Kartik, Raman, and Ved who were vaccinated at the hospital at Police Lines in Sector 26 and Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, in the morning. The cause behind their deteriorating condition could not be ascertained.

Abolition of Class XII boards ruled out

Putting an end to speculation that Board exams for class XII could be abolished, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Chairman Vineet Joshi said this was ruled out. He went on to significantly announce that the new evaluation system would very soon be extended to class XI.

A day after the Chandigarh Tribune highlighted the pending viva voce cases of research scholars at Panjab University; yet another violation of a self-imposed deadline surfaced, whereby it now revealed that certain departments have been blatantly violating a mandatory clause that requires them to send a list of examiners to the Dean University Instructions (DUI) for approval, at least six months before the thesis are due for submission.

Man ‘kills’ cousin, injures another in brawl
Bassi Pathana, November 3
A cloth merchant, who went to nearby Sampla village for the recovery of his outstanding dues from one Malkiat Kaur, was brutally stabbed by a relative of his customer. The woman who owed him money tried to intervene, but the inebriated relative stabbed her too and she died on the spot. The shopkeeper was rushed to a private hospital in Mohali in a critical condition.

Three youths arrested for robbery

A team of CIA staff, Ambala, arrested three youths involved in a robbery case at Sony Showroom at Ambala Cantonment on October 25. Talking to the mediapersons, KK Sindhu, IG, police, Ambala range, said a gang of three youths, in the age group of 20 and 25 years, was arrested by a team of CIA staff last night from a hotel.

13-yr-old girl killed in fire incident
Dera Bassi, November 3
A 13-year-old girl of Fatehpur Bahra village was killed in a fire incident. According to information, the fire broke out when the girl was working in a kitchen yesterday. She was admitted in the GMCH-32, Chandigarh, where she succumbed to her injuries. The police has registered a case under Section 174. The body was handed over to the family members after conducting the postmortem.

32-year-old medico ends life
Chandigarh, November 3
Unable to endure backache, a 32-year-old doctor, Shweta, hung herself to death at her Sector 15 residence on Tuesday afternoon. The police said Shweta had held no one responsible for her death in her suicide note, saying she could not endure the pain and was ending her life.
