MLA distributes grants
Dera Bassi, October 30 He claimed that SAD-BJP government had started various welfare schemes for different sections of society. People of the state would support the present government on the basis of its performance. The MLA addressed the public meetings in different villages of Dera Bassi area after distributing the grants for development works. Panchyat of Amlala village received Rs 2 lakh for development, Chadiala Rs 1.75 lakh, Brouli Rs 2.75 lakh, Mehamandpur Rs 1.50 lakh and Stabarh received Rs 1.50 lakh. Bunny appealed to all panchyats to utilise these grants for development without any partiality. |

Textbook Scam Case
Chandigarh, October 30 The bureaucrat, along with Kiran
Mishra, district project coordinator at Jind, JP Bhatnagar, an official with the Sarv Shiksha
Abhiyan, and Raj Kumar, had been named in three separate charge sheets filed in court by the CBI last week. Appearing in court, CBI special prosecutor Pawan Dogra stated that it had been proved that Sanjeev Kumar abused his official position in connivance with the other accused and accepted bribe in the case. “Raj Kumar procured bills of posters related to the abhiyan which were not published. He helped Sanjeev in procuring fake bills. The accused were also found involved in corruption in the LCD project during the investigation,” said the prosecutor. On Thursday, the court awarded two years’ imprisonment to Rakesh Kumar, assistant project coordinator with the Haryana Prathmik Shiksha Pariyojna
Parishad, and his acquaintance Rajesh for fudging bills for Rs 2.5 lakh. The case had been registered in 2005 during an investigation into the case registered against Sanjeev Kumar in the textbook scam case, which had surfaced in the District Primary Education Project
(DPEP) of Haryana in 1999. |

Court tells police to act on Fiza’s complaint
Mohali, October 30 After being booked in a tresspass case, Fiza has filed a criminal complaint under Section 156(3) of the CrPC seeking investigations into her complaint of the police not acting against her neighbour Ram Krishan. She alleged that despite her relative being assaulted, the police did not register any case. On the other hand, Ram Krishan has alleged Fiza of throwing eggs at his house. On the basis of his complaint, the police had arrested Fiza for allegedly disturbing peace in her locality in Sector 48-C where she lived. She was released by the magistrate after she furnished surety bonds. The police claimed that it acted on a complaint lodged by her neighbour Ram Krishan, who stated that Fiza had thrown eggs at his house, claimed to have captured her action in a CCTV footage. |

Two nabbed with charas
Chandigarh, October 30 According to officials, timber contractor Raj (32) and Veernath (28) were arrested following a tip-off when they arrived in a Hyundai i20. A search of the car led to the recovery of the contraband, which was concealed in specially designed cavities in the car. Officials said they had received prior information about the duo arriving in the city with the contraband. “We were waiting for them and the search led to the seizure,” said an official, adding that they were booked under the NDPS Act. During preliminary interrogation, the suspects revealed that they had come to the city to strike a deal for franchise with a share trading company. Officials were trying to ascertain the veracity of their claim and find details about their local connections with drug peddlers. Duplicate deodorants, perfumes seized at mela
Chandigarh, October 30 They were identified as Deepinder and Bipin Kumar from Uttar Pradesh. The police seized around 6,000 items worth Rs 30 lakh from them. According to the police, the accused were selling duplicate Reebok, Adidas, Dove, Park View, Axe and Brute products. The matter was noticed by officials of a local firm, authorised by Hindustan Lever to provide information about duplicate products. After getting information that some products were on sale at two stalls, the officials bought some deodorants and perfumes and sent those to the laboratory for tests. “The test reports confirmed that not only were the products duplicate, but also caused skin problems,” said an official. Following a complaint by Rachna Kapoor, the police conducted a raid at the mela and recovered the duplicate items. “During investigations, it was found that these duplicate items were being manufactured by a company in Delhi, which used to hire persons to sell those only at melas and exhibitions,” said Anokh Singh, SHO of the Sector 34 police station. The accused attracted unsuspected consumers by offering special discounts on the duplicate branded items. The police sent a party to Delhi for further investigations. A case under Sections 420, 120-B and 270 of the IPC and Section 63 of Copy Act was registered. |

Man held with stolen motorcycle

Thieves decamped with gold jewellery worth lakhs of rupees, cash and other valuable things after breaking into a locked house in AKS Colony, Zirakpur, yesterday. In his complaint to the police, Nasib Singh, the owner of the house, said he had gone out of station this morning along with his family. When he returned in the evening, he found the lock of the main gate to be broken. While entering the house, he found that the house was ransacked and all things were scattered. Nasib Singh claimed that Rs 35,000, eight tola gold jewellery and other valuable things were missing. A case has been registered
Two shops burgled
KalkA:Thieves decamped with cash by breaking open a locker of a shop at Gandhi Chowk, Kalka, last night. Chinta Mani, owner of the shop, has lodged a complaint with the police alleging that the thieves even took away the locker of the shop. Notably, another incident of theft had also taken place on Thursday night, in which the thieves stole Rs 20,000 from the shop at Gandhi Chowk. The shopkeepers have urged the police to intensify patrolling during night hours. |

Chandigarh, October 30 After winning the toss, St Stephen’s put on a mammoth 275 for the loss of six wickets in their stipulated 40 overs. Udit Hari Mehta (79 off 71), including 7 fours and 3 sixes, and Karan Aggarwal cemented a 127-run partnership for the first wicket. Gurmohan Singh scored 65 runs off 48 balls, hitting eight fours and two sixes. The second-wicket partnership between Karan and Gurmohan yielded 91 runs. Gurpinder Singh remained not out at 34 with three sixes and one four. For GNPS-36, Charanjit Singh (3 for 48) and Sachit Madra (2 for 58) were the only ones to impress with the ball. Chasing the victory target, GNPS were bowled out for a partly 113 runs in 27.2 overs. Sanjog Singh (40), hitting 6 fours and one six, was the only batsman who could face St Stephen’s bowlers with some courage.
