2 motorcyclists killed

Rajpura, October 24
Two motorcyclists, working in an iron factory of Rajpura, got killed on the spot this evening in a head-on collision with an unidentified vehicle. The deceased, both residents of Buta Singh Wala village, near Banur, were going towards their village on the bike when they met with accident near Dhankansu village near Banur.

They have been identified as Gurmel Singh (26) and Manak Singh (27). The police came to know about the accident around 7.30 pm.

Relatives of the deceased, who reached at the spot, said they youths would rush towards their respective villages on the bike at 7 pm every evening from the iron factory in Rajpura.

An unidentified vehicle, perhaps a car, was trying to overtake another vehicle when it collided with the bike. Both the occupants of the motorbike fell down and died on the spot. While parents of one of the deceased reached the spot, efforts were on to inform family members of the other. Bodies of both the deceased were kept in a civil hospital.

An investigating official said a case against the unidentified vehicle driver would be registered in this regard and the bodies would be handed over to their family members after conducting the postmortem tomorrow.

A large number accidents take place on the stretch between Rajpura and Banur during rush hours.

Mukat Public School first in singing

Mukat Public School, Rajpura, won the state-level national singing competition (Hindi), whereas Sanskrit Vidyalaya DAV Public School, Patiala, secured the first position in (Sanskrit). The competition was organised by the local unit of Bharat Vikas Parishad.

Various schools participated in the competition. Ranbir Singh Khatra, SSP, was the chief guest, while Jagdeep Singh Cheema, district president, SAD(B), presided over.

Yash Mahajan, zonal secretary, Bharat Vikas Parishad, KMS Nambir, secretary of the parishad, were the guests of honour. The SSP appreciated the efforts of Bharat Vikas Parishad and called upon other social organisations to come forward to wage a war against social evils like drug abuse and female foeticide.

Raj Kumar Wadhwa, president, said, “The parishad had initiated the project to create awareness among students about our culture and religion.” He said the winning teams would participate in the national-level competition. — OC

Festive Season
Health officials to check adulteration

Ambala, October 24
Taking a note of adulterated milk products and khoya being sold, the health department has launched a campaign to check the menace. Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow has also instructed sweets manufacturers to provide pure sweets to consumers during the festival season.

Recently the health department conducted raids at a few prominent sweets shops in the main bazaars of the cantonment, including Rai Market and Sadar Bazar areas, and collected samples, which were sent for testing at Karnal laboratory, sources said.

Civil Surgeon, Ambala, VK Yadav said special teams of food inspectors was formed to check the adulterated sweets, milk and milk products. The milk products being brought from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan would be checked at railway stations. Besides, trucks transporting these products would also be checked.

Sources further added that during checking seven bags of milk products were seized by the police near Ambala Cantt bus stand. The health department also collected samples from five sweets shops, the names of which were written on the bags seized by the police.

Diwali celebrations are incomplete without sweets that even calorie and health conscious people find them hard to resist. Sweets are as diverse as the celebrations of the festival itself. Although there are specific recipes, sweetmeat shops have begun blending them with contemporary ones to come up with exclusive Diwali sweets that appear more tempting.

According to sources, the district weight and measures department also launched a campaign to have a check on the shopkeepers who weigh box along with sweets. They warned the sweet manufacturers not to weigh card box while selling sweets which was against the Weight and Measurement Act.

Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow said the administration would not allow anyone to play with the health of people. He said strict action would be taken if someone was found selling adulterated milk products. He would also ensure that the officers concerned did not unnecessarily harassed the sweets shop owners, he added.

Couple hurt in hit-&-run case

In a hit-and-run road accident, a couple was injured after a car rammed into their motorcycle at Sarangpur village on Friday. Sant Ram, a resident of Indira Colony, Mani Majra reported to the police that a car (CH 04 J 1451) rammed into his motorcycle near the bridge at Sarangpur village on October 22.

Both he and his wife Shruti were injured in the mishap and were admitted to the PGI.

They were later discharged from the hospital. The police has registered a case of causing injuries due to rash and negligent driving at the police station-11.

Gambling

The police has arrested, Subash, a resident of Janta Colony, Sector 25, from his locality while allegedly indulging in gambling on Friday.

The police recovered Rs 1,635 from him. A case under the Gambling Act has been registered at police station-11.

Arrested

The police arrested Rakesh Kumar, who runs Hotel RK Plaza in Burail, on charges of not maintaining proper record of visitors on Saturday.

A case of violating prohibitory orders under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered.

Motorcycle stolen

Neel Kamal, a resident of Sector 56, reported to the police alleging that someone his motorcycle (PB 65 F 7668 T) was stolen from his house. A case of theft has been registered.

One held with revolver

Panchkula: The police arrested a person carrying a German-make Mark 7.76 revolver, with six live cartridges, near the meal chungi at Kalka last night.

The police said the accused was identified as Satnam Singh of Maranwala in Pinjore block. During a search, the revolver was recovered from him.

The Kalka police registered a case under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act. He was produced in court today and remanded to judicial custody till November 11.

Firing

Mohali: Four unidentified persons have been booked for allegedly firing into the air outside the Civil Hospital in Phase VI here today.

A case has been registered on the complaint of Balwinder Singh, a resident of Kharar.

The police said the complainant alleged that he had gone to meet his father-in-law at the hospital. He was standing in the front of the emergency ward when four unidentified youths in a car started firing into the air and sped away.

The investigating officer said a case had been registered and investigations had been started.

Six booked

The police today booked six persons on charges of assaulting a resident of Bharatpur, Sohana.

The investigating officer said Avtar Singh alleged that Tejinder Singh, Sukhwant Singh, Jeet Singh, Golu, Bhagwant Singh and Rinku, all residents of Bhagwantpur village, assaulted and threatened him yesterday.

Avtar Singh was injured and was admitted to the Civil Hospital, Phase VI.

One injured in road mishap

Zirakpur: Mahinga Singh, a resident of Mahela Pathana village, near Zirakpur, got seriously injured in a road accident that took place near gurdwara Nabha Sahib on the Zirakpur-Patiala Highway here today.

According to the police, injured Mahinga Singh, in his complaint, said he was on his way to Nabha village when his car was badly hit by a car coming from Panchkula side. The car was badly damaged in the collision. He was rushed to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh, where his condition is said to be stable. The injured car driver has been identified as Deepak Kumar, a resident of Panchkula, who has been booked and further proceedings have been initiated.

Theft

A domestic helper fled away with cash and gold jewellery worth thousands of rupees from a house in Orbit Apartments, here today. The accused has been booked on the complaint of the house owner and her hunt was on.

According to the police, Sandeep Katiyal, a resident of house number 20, Orbit Apartments, in his complaint, told the police that he had hired a domestic helper named Renu Yadav through a company.

It was when all his family members were away from home yesterday, Renu fled away from the house along with the cash and gold jewellery worth thousands of rupees placed in the house.

Woman robbed of car, gold chain

An unidentified youth in his early twenties allegedly robbed a woman of her car and gold chain after kidnapping her from Colony Number 4 here this evening. The 32-year-old victim, Aausher Jahan, told the police that she and her husband, was on her way to Dera Bassi, where they resided, after visiting the Sector 22 market.

Around 8:30 pm, when they reached Colony Number 4, her husband went to buy something from a shop. In the meantime, a youth approached her, asking her to move her Indica car. Before she could react, the youth sat in the car and drove away. The victim said the youth kept hitting her with a stone while driving the car and told her to take out all valuables she had.

She handed him her gold chain while he drove the car from Colony Number 4 to Sector 31 near the Tribune chowk through Ram Darbar and Sector 47.

When the car slowed down in between, she managed to jump out. The police was informed about the incident.

DSP (East) Jaswant Singh Khaira said they recorded the statement of the victim, who suffered a head injury. A case of robbery under Section 329 of the IPC was registered.

Two held for LPG cylinder misuse

The police arrested two eating joint owners yesterday for using domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes. Sources said the district food and supply officer, SP Manchanda, lodged a complaint against Sham Lal of Shanti Nagar, Mani Majra.

He was caught using domestic LPG cylinders at his dhaba in Motor Market, Mani Majra, yesterday. Four cylinders were seized from his dhaba.

In another incident, Gian Chand, inspector, food and supply filed a complaint with the police that Ravinder Singh of New Indira Colony, Mani Majra, was found using domestic LPG cylinders at his eating joint.

The police recovered five cylinders from the shop. The police registered two separate cases under the Essential Commodities Act at the Mani Majra police station.

Back-to-back wins for Little Champs

Quick-fire 44 runs in 23 balls by Aman helped Little Champs Club, Faridabad, beat Mount Carmel, Sector 47, by five wickets in the first Lal’s Cup Cricket Tournament U-14 at BTS Grounds in Sector 48 here today.

After winning the toss, Little Champs decided to field first. Mount Carmel scored 144 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their stipulated 20 overs.

Manpreet (45 off 27 balls) and Inderjeet (28 off 21) were the main scorers for their team.

For Little Champs, Tushar and Aman were the pick of the bowlers as they took two wickets each giving away 29 and 16 runs, respectively. In reply, Little Champs scored 147 runs losing only five wickets with one over to spare.

Aman (44 off 23) and Shakib (32 off 30) were the main scorers. For Mount Carmel, Manpreet was the only bowler who impressed with his bowling figures of two for 25.

Brief scores: Mount Carmel-47: 144 for 7 in 20 overs (Manpreet 45, Inderjeet 28; Tushar 29 for 2; Aman 16 for 2). Little Champs Club: 147 for 5 in 19 overs (Aman 44, Shakib 32; Manpreet 25 for 2).

In the second match of the day, Aman’s flamboyant 39 off 22 balls and three wickets for three runs helped Little Champs, Faridabad, beat MCA, Mohali, by nine wickets. After winning the toss, Little Champs once again chose to field first. MCA, Mohali, were bowled out for 72 runs in the last 20th overs of the innings.

Nirmal (20 off 36) and Prabhaw (15 off 18) were the main scorers. For Little Champs, Aman and Vishal were the pick of the bowlers claiming three wickets each giving away 3 and 9 runs, respectively.

In reply, Little Champs achieved the target of 73 runs in nine overs, losing just one wicket in the process.

Aman (39 off 22) and Tushar Singh (22 off 30) were the main scorers. For MCA, Anupam was the only wicket-taker, claiming one wicket for 20 runs.

Manav Mangal School, Chandigarh, and its Panchkula branch established their supremacy by winning titles in the CBSE Cluster XIII Inter-School Table Tennis Tournament-2010 at Manav Mangal Smart School here yesterday. DAV Public School also won two titles.

In the U-14 category (boys), Manav Mangal School, Panchkula, emerged winners, while AKSIPS, Chandigarh, finished as runners-up. In the U-14 category (girls), DAV Public School, Chandigarh, emerged victorious, while Sacred Heart, Chandigarh, finished as runners-up. In the U-16 category (girls), Manav Mangal High School, Chandigarh, scripted win, while Manav Mangal School, Panchkula, were the runners-up. Champ siblings get warm welcome

Geeta and Babita, sister from Haryana who won gold and silver medals, respectively, in the wrestling event of the Commonwealth Games were accorded a warm welcome by local MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu, District Planning Board chairman NK Sharma and other prominent persons here today.

The sisters were on a visit to their cousin Uttam Singh, a resident of Sector 68 here. Sharing their experience with those present, they said it was great experience winning on home ground as support from the crowd helped boost their morale.

“Our next aim is Olympics and we will make every effort to achieve the goal,” they said.

Their father Mahavir Singh accompanied the sisters. They said the welcome they had received on reaching Bhiwani was memorable. The facilities in India were limited, they added.

Sidhu and Sharma gave the sisters Rs 11,000 each as a token of appreciation for their achievement.

Punjab log 8-wkt win

Punjab drubbed Jammu and Kashmir by eight wickets in the Under-19 Inter-State One Day Cricket Tournament for Vinoo Mankad Trophy being played at Amtar, Himachal Pradesh.

Opener Manan Vohra played a vital role in the win with his 73-run knock.

Batting first, JKCA posted 145 all out in 44.3 overs. Punjab medium pacers Sandeep Sharma and Kamal Passi wrecked havoc on the JKCA batting line-up.

Sharma cleaned up opener Amritpal Singh on the third ball of his first over.

JJ Singh (4) and AR Bhatt (7) became Sharma’s next victims, while Asif was clean bowled by Kamal Passi on four. The bowling honours for Punjab were shared by Kamal Passi (four for 48), Sandeep Sharma (three for 15), Gurinder Singh (two for 26).

In reply, Punjab overhauled the target in just 22.2 overs losing two wickets in the course. Pargat Singh (45 off 38) shone for Punjab by stitching a 102-run opening partnership with Manan Vohra.

Day 1: Tejpal spot on

Tejpal Singh is leading the show in the .22 prone open sight senior men as he shot 450 points out of 600 in the 35th Chandigarh State Shooting Championship that commenced at Patiala ki Rao Shooting Ranges in Sector 25 here today.

In the .22 prone open sight junior men, Vikas was leading on the first day scoring 436 points.

Amrinder Kaur Sangha with 363 points led in the 10 m air pistol senior women event, while in the senior men section, Shivender made his mark by scoring 562 points.

In the 10 m air rifle women, Roopmeet Maan scored 376 points out of 400, while in the men’s event, Adhiraj Singh scored 563 points out of 600.

The 50 m free pistol men event saw Manik Kalra take the lead with 263 points out of 300.

Zamal leads team to pro-am win

Panchkula, October 24
Mohd Zamal Hossain Mollah’s team comprising BS Cheema, Manpaal Singh and Mann Singh clinched the pro-am title of the Haryana Open 2010 at the Panchkula Golf Club here today.

Played in the team scramble format where the team’s best ball was chosen on every shot, including the putting green, Mollah led his team to victory with a 53.4 score.

PGTI member Ranjit Singh’s team also posted a score of 53.4 but finished second on the basis of a countback on the back nine.

Ranjit’s team comprised amateurs HS Bhullar, HS Heera and Dawa Chering.

The prize for the longest drive was bagged by Shobhit Ghai who came up with a 324 yard drive on hole No. 8.

The prize for the closest shot to the pin on hole No. 17 was won by Jyoti Matharoo. His shot landed five feet and seven inches from the pin.

Maj Gen Purshottam Vij won the contest for the straightest drive on hole No. 10. His drive landed on the centre of the fairway.

DAV College claim title

DAV College, Sector 10, lawn tennis team won the top honours in the Panjab University Inter-College Championship at the Panjab University tennis courts here. In the final, DAV’s Gurmohit and Suraj beat Mandeep Gill and Simerveer of Panjab University Campus 2-0.

In the match for the third place, SGGS College, Sector 26, beat GSG Khalsa College Gurusar Sudhar 2-1.
