Traffic Blockade
Bassi Pathana, October 21 Tension prevailed in grain market, as procurement of paddy and lifting of procured paddy has become a bone of contention between the commission agents and rice millers of the area causing inconvenience to farmers and labourers. Local SDM today called for a meeting of both the parties and according to sources allegations and counter allegations were levelled at the meeting. The procurement of paddy process has been affected due to the tassel between commission agents and rice millers. It is learnt that very little paddy was purchased since the tassel started and the lifting of procured paddy has come to a standstill, as both the rice millers and government agencies are not lifting the procured paddy from the past two days. The farmers and labourers are the worst sufferers. Farmer Swarn Singh said he had been sitting in the grain market from the past three days, as his paddy had not been purchased. Labourers alleged that they had been cleaning the heaps twice or thrice even then the staff of procurement agencies and rice millers rejected their paddy. They said they were paid cleaning charges for one time and now they had to take the job twice or thrice. They said labourers had been deserted from the mandis and if this continued there would be acute shortage of labour. |

Escalators at Ambala railway station soon
Ambala, October 21 According to sources, the proposal for the installation of escalators at Ambala Cantonment and Chandigarh railway stations estimated at Rs 20 lakh have been sent to the railway headquarters for finalisation of the project. Earlier, the railway board had sanctioned 100 escalators for installation at category “A” stations. The work at Ambala and Chandigarh railway stations would be completed in two phases after approval from the railway headquarters, a senior railway officer said. The move comes at a time when dwindling strength of porters at stations, after their promotion as gangmen, has left passengers and senior citizens with no choice but to carry the luggage themselves. The idea is to provide relief to the elderly and ensure faster movement of passengers with luggage and de-congest the station, he said. The facility will also come as a boon to the disabled. Sometime back, the railway minister had declared to make Ambala Cantonment a world-class railway station in the country. The senior officer in the railway department said the work to facelift nearly 150-year-old railway station would commence soon and there was a proposal to upgrade the condition of all seven platforms. To review development works, a team of officials of the DRM office inspected the railway station along with technical staff and selected pending works to be carried out at the railway station to provide it a new look. The works included attractive shades over platforms, benches for passengers and air-conditioned paid waiting rooms on platform No. 1. The escalators will be installed near the UTS counter on platform No. 1 and on platform No. 7, as both platforms witness maximum rush. The sources further added that a modern restaurant on platform No. 1 and fast-food counters on all platforms to offer all type of tasty foods to passengers and drinking water would soon be made available. |
