Kurali, October 10
The railway overbridge, constructed at Kurali over Sirhind-Nangal line, is unable to meet with the growing quantum of traffic that moves on the stretch. Residents of Kurali not only feel cheated with the coming up of this toll plaza, but also feel that the government has miserably failed to live to expectations of common man.

As per Surinder Sharma, president of the Rasta Kholo Sangharsh Committee, which has been agitating against setting up of toll tax barrier and protested consequent fleece, reveals that the project has violated several norms laid in its agreement.

Earlier, the width of bridge was planned to be 17.5 metre to accommodate the growing traffic. However, owing to urban construction, it was found infeasible. It was later decided to make it 13.5 metre, which was also not feasible.

Finally, it was decided that total width of the bridge would be 11.5 metre with 0.5 metre area of railings, 1.5 metre each for pavements and only 7.5 metre was left for the traffic, Sharma added.

Sharma has pursued the matter till the Supreme Court wherein it was directed that locals be exempted from paying toll tax, which has never happened.

“Only a handful of us, who lay hue and cry, are exempted from paying the tax. Rest all locals pay taxes, which is not justified,” he added.

Besides charging for a narrow bridge and potholed road right beneath the toll tax barrier, the construction company is also minting money from the advertisement hoardings displayed promptly on the facet of toll tax barrier building. Even the service lanes provided are inadequate.

Toll collected from private four wheeler vehicles for multiple trips in 24 hours is Rs 17. Buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles pay much higher amount.

Construction of this bridge has completely alienated the west side population of area from the main city. More than 40 trains run on this route daily and with the work on Bilaspur cement factory getting completed, 15 to 20 more trains are expected to add. People living in alienated area have no option but to use unsafe methods to cross the railway lines for commuting.

XEN, central public works division (CPWD), Gurmukh Singh says he has recently joined the office and will look into the matter.

Kurali battles traffic problem
Megha Mann
Tribune News Service

Kurali, October 10
Kurali battles a traffic problem, as it is plagued with traffic flowing towards and from Amritsar, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Ropar, pilgrim centres Anandpur Sahib and Naina Devi, industrial areas of Himachal Pradesh, including Nalagarh, Baddi, Bilaspur, etc, moving on this stretch of National Highway-21.

Converging at the ill-managed Kurali chowk, the traffic moves at a snail’s pace, especially during the peak hours. Serpentine queues are seen from the chowk till the toll tax barrier and towards the Chandigarh road.

Situation worsens when people, taking advantage of absence of traffic cops, hold the entire traffic for ransom in wake of their grudge against the local government or the administration.

In one such incident, people blocked traffic protesting against the police inaction over the issue of a couple eloping on their own will to get married. Such protests not only clog the road, but holds entire traffic for ransom for hours together, even after the protest has come to an end.

While protesters have found holding up traffic a novel way to register their protest and blackmail the authorities concerned, the traffic police has chosen to remain mum.

The main chowk is often found manned only during VIP visit. “We are understaffed and overworked. Mohali district mainly relies on the police force taken from other districts or from different battalions. Owing to proximity to Chandigarh and cricket stadium at Mohali, we often have little time to look after the area,” reveal cops at Kurali police station.

The roads witness heavy rush from different quarters. Large and heavy vehicles carrying industry goods and raw material ply on this road. Similarly, the industrial traffic moving on the Siswan-Baddi road, too, converges here before moving ahead.

“While opening of the Siswan-Baddi road has shortened 56 km distance between Chandigarh and Baddi to mere 26 km, it has left city choking. Government should draft a plan to de-congest this stretch as well,” demanded Ashok Kumar, an area resident.

Meanwhile, DIG, Ropar, Gurpreet Deo was not available for comments. Project to widen this road up to Kharar is under process. The central public works division has already submitted proposal and budget to the department seeking approval. Entire stretch will be widened and many trees will be axed down for this purpose.

Chandigarh, October 10
The termination of Kings XI Punjab from the Indian Premier League has left thousands of local fans disillusioned even as affected cricketers and officials are tightlipped on the issue.

“Why you are dragging me into the fight arena of bulls,” said India’s first cricket Dronacharya DP Azad when asked for his comments on the issue. “I have heard the news but am yet to know the details,” said Azad.

On the other hand, local cricketers who were part of Kings XI preferred to remain silent on today’s development, which is likely to tell upon their cricketing career.

At least eight domestic Punjab Cricket Association players, including Sunny Sohal, Karan Goel, VRV Singh, Uday Kaul, Reetinder Sodhi and Bipul Shamra, were part of Kings XI, whereas Sarabjit Ladda and Amit Uniyal had represented Rajasthan Royals.

Only one talked on the condition of anonymity, saying the news was a big shock for budding cricketers.

“Being part of the league not only gave us a chance to play with international players but also earn handsomely. Big names will move on to other IPL teams but no other franchisee will pick budding players like us,” he said.

Local fans were disappointed with the termination of Preity Zinta’s team. “The team had earned a major fan-following in the state. We will surely miss the team and also Preity Zinta in the next leg of the league,” said cricket fans Amit Trehan, Neeraj, Sumit and Sandeep.
