We are at millers’ mercy, fume farmers
Karnal, October 4 The farmers, who held up traffic for four hours yesterday, were furious that despite assurance from the local authorities, paddy was rotting in the open and they had been left to fend for themselves. The blockade that began at noon ended at 5.30 pm after strenuous efforts by the administration. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the highway. the traffic to Delhi was diverted via Meerut and Shamli. The farmers parked their tractors-trailers on the road. They also placed boulders and bricks on the highway. The police booked 300 persons, including local leaders Balkar, Tinku, Rajatman, Deepak, Jasmer, Balwinder, Gurnam, Satnam, Hari Singh and Arjun Dass under Sections 147,148,283 and 341 of the IPC for obstructing traffic and indulging in violence here yesterday. The farmers charged the government with shirking responsibility and demanded that the procurement be undertaken by state agencies and the FCI and the role of rice-millers be eliminated. Bhartaiya Kisan Union (BKU) district general secretary Sham Singh said the farmers should be permitted to undertake the shelling of paddy and the rice should be sold directly to government agencies. The leaders said against Rs 40,000 incurred on rice cultivation on one hectare area, the net return was Rs 20,000. The situation had turned worst this year with floods and diseases post-floods. Instead of providing relief to the farmers, the government had left them at the mercy of millers. District Food and Supplies Controller (DFSC) Ravinder Malik claimed that 30,000 quintals of paddy had been purchased in the Karnal Grain Market and Confed, Hafed, FCI, DFSC and other government agencies had started making purchases. The farmers, however, maintained that the purchase was negligible with about 40,000 to 50,000 quintals of paddy arriving in the market daily. DC Neelam Pradeep Kasni assured the farmers that the entire produce meeting the prescribed specification would be lifted. But the farmers said the paddy was not being lifted on the pretext that the produce was below specification and the moisture content was 22 per cent against 17 per cent specified by the government. Meanwhile, a delegation of rice-millers, led by president of the state unit Azad Singh Rathi, called on the Chief Minister. The millers urged the government to abolish the hoarding charges, raise the percentage of damaged and discoloured paddy to 4 and 4.5 respectively and decrease the quantum of rice per quintal to 64 kg. |

Farmers were at the receiving end because of the “pro-rich policies” and their dependence on imported seeds, fertilisers and pesticides, he said, and asked the farmers to switch over to traditional organic farming. The Trust had decided to adopt 600 villages in different parts of the country to develop these by adopting indigenous methods, he said. Advocating strengthening of the rural economy by establishing small-scale units in villages, Swami Ramdev said the village youth and rural artisans would get gainful employment on the doorstep. This would also halt the brain drain of trained and educated youth from villages to metropolitan cities, he added.
