Sachin Tendulkar shares a light moment with Harbhajan Singh

The thing that we all love about the colour blue is that the moment a bunch of eleven walk into the field wearing it, it becomes the colour of the nation!

So, Wednesday afternoon was all about celebrating blue, ‘Bleeding Blue’ for the ‘Men in Blue’. The Indian cricket team got its new look prior to its clash with the Aussies with the Nike’s new, brighter, bolder and technologically advanced ODI kit. The team jersey is the lightest (less than 500 gms) and smartest ever. And why is that important? Well, the fact that everything about the ‘Men in Blue’ is of interest and the new look claims to enhance performance as well! (anything for a win).

And presenting the new look with a perfect ramp walk were Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Zaheer Khan, Pragyan Ojha and Virendra Sehwag (call it practice, thanks to the Fashion Weeks they have been a part of or the Team India effect). “The new jersey is a combination of innovation and inspiration, designed for movement and passion for cricket,” says Tarun Puri, managing director and general manger, Nike India Pvt Ltd. “We have introduced the considered design ethos, one that combines performance, aesthetics and soul of the sports,” he adds.

The jersey has brighter and bolder look for youthful appeal, dry-fit technology for superior moisture management, aerographic print for higher cooling effect, more stretch for better movement, laser cut holes for ventilation and graphic inside chest for inspiration to be on the top. And we thought it was just another team jersey! It also has two stars showcasing India’s two world cup wins.

Well, apart from being high on design, it’s made from recycled plastic bottles. Now, just for that question mark look, Fiona Taylor, the design director for Nike has an explanation. “It is made from recycled polyester, each one produced from up to eight plastic bottles. Soon, Team India will debut in the recycled version on the pitch as well.” The new kit is for the ODI and T20 format of the game.

And when its team India, nothing than the best works! “We tested the jerseys with other athletes and after watching improved performance results, we finalised things for Team India,” says Fiona.

As for the players, well, they seemed all fired up to try and test the new look against the Aussies. “The new jersey feels good, its light and helps you perform better. Playing in the sub-continent can be taxing and the right gear is a big support for any player,” says pacer Zaheer Khan.

And Sachin Tendulkar had something special to say about the design, “It has got two of my favourite colours - blue and orange. And the Tricolour on it makes it something special.”

Since the event gave players a reason to be and feel light, there were things shared in good humour apart from cricket. Like, Harbhajan being a favourite with the Australians (not just for his on-field antics), “They love me a bit too much to let go of me,” shares the Turbanotor. Sachin entering his 22 season of cricket and Sehwag’s secret to keeping fit were the other lighter aspects of conversation! “All you have to do is make runs,” shares Sehwag. That too in style!

Campaign Trail

Under the Bleed Blue campaign, Nike has invited fans from all over India to support their team by taking over one-and-half million handprints on the t-shirts. “These have been travelling across the length and the breadth of the country and will be presented to the team to wish them luck. They represent the hopes, ambitions and oneness through the game. You can also make your own tee online by sharing it with your friends on social networking websites,” says Tarun Puri.

WORLD TOURISM WEEK
Guest appearance
Neha Walia

The city is a great place to be in for vacations and has some places for the art lovers as well — Paula, foreign student

The city is high on hosting its guests these days. Tourism seems to suit the Corbusier city nicely: a picture perfect example of sticking to traditions and yet modernising. A lot is happening and more is on the cards. While the tourists enjoy a special treatment and we are at our hospitable best, a curiosity arises. That of checking out what tourist spot gets the most attention from our guests!

Well, some might instantly believe Rock Garden or Sukhna Lake (given their due share of promotion) but where do the cultural and art places stand on the list?

“All throughout the year, we have a good footfall at the Le Corbusier Centre but it has gone up slightly during this week, thanks to the World Tourism Week celebrations,” informs VN Singh, director or the Le Corbusier Centre-19. The start of the week saw a delegation of 20 students from Switzerland visiting the centre. “It’s good for someone who wants to know the history of the city. The city is a great place to be in for vacations and has some places for the art lovers as well,” shares Paula, one of the students from the delegation. “Look at it from an artist’s point of view or a layman, the city does please your creativity.” She agrees on a point that for a first-timer, one visit to the centre will open an encyclopaedia on Chandigarh and its ways. “It’s my maiden visit here and I am going pick a handful of souvenirs, all defining Chandigarh, even a painting or two as a gift for my friends back home,” she says.

Despite the unusual remarks like clean, away from crowd (though it seems irrelevant now) and not many ‘poor’ people around, Chandigarh’s art scene seldom finds mention. So, do the cultural spaces lack their share of happening moments, with just a few exhibitions for a few admirers? The fact that Le Corbusier holds a great deal of importance in city’s tourism status is undeniable. But even so, the centre is holding back its celebrations for the upcoming birth anniversary of Corbusier on October 6.

“We do have a series of exhibitions under the Tourism Week Celebrations at the Art Gallery, and the Le Corbusier Centre on its own is a major attraction for its souvenir collection,” says AK Malhotra, general manager, CITCO. An exhibition by a city-based artist showcased the style of Corbusier’s architecture in her paintings. Another contribution in this regard is by students of Arts College… by offering colourful rickshaw rides for the tourists at Sukhna Lake (where else!).

Warming up to winter
Style, colour, pattern … the autumn/winter collection has a lot to offer
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Fall winter collection for women this season is a masculine sleek look; military inspired attire too finds place on the store shelves. Leather and velvet too are a haute pick, but it's the animal prints and chunky knits that will make their mark this season.— Geet Sethi

Crisp patterns, weaved fabric, bright hues; greeting winters on a warm note, what we saw for women autumn/winter collection is a play of colours, structured lines, fitted silhouettes and well-defined designs. Style and colour though remain almost similar to last year, for the coming season we saw a lot of checks, abstract designs, leather and velvet patches and fur too seemed to be riding high. Natural fur, artificial fur, red fur, green fur, black fur; fur is everywhere. And if you like fur well, it's high time you get a few garments made of it.

Back to shopping; this is again that time of the year when we need time to understand what exactly we want and need, and then with a few (or plenty) ideas in mind we venture out. And to help you get what you want, we get some tips.

For stylish, sober, yet elegant stuff, walk into Wills-17 showroom. Though the variety is not much, you can pick nice noose neck cardigans, check dresses in a mix of wool and cotton weave, satin dresses, shirts and some elegant tops. For the colours - blue, green and purple rules the collection. "For women we see a lot of one-piece dresses, other than that we have formal shirts, plain sweaters in varied hues. Geometrical patterns like stripes and checks are in this season too, but both checks and stripes are very detailed and closely knit," says an employee of Wills Lifestyle in Sector 17.

While the key to trend is elegance, at Esprit-17 winter collection for women wears a dandy look. Says Geet Sethi, regional manager, North, Esprit, "Fall winter collection for women this season is a masculine sleek look; military inspired attire too finds place on the store shelves. Leather and velvet too are a haute pick, but it's the animal prints and chunky knits that will make their mark this season."

For the fall/winter season the colour palette is very varied, allowing a varied choice. From light neutral shades to classic dark shades such as khaki, charcoal grey, dark blue or black, to rich vibrant tones of red, deep purple, bright red and many others. However, in the multitude of choices you have for colder season, a few stand out.

At Madame there is a variety of woollen tops. Abstract in pattern the collection is a blend of metallic threads, surface ornamentation with loads of silvery sequence, crystals and an added accessory of studded belts, anklets and pendants. Tweed and chequered coats too find a mention here. The colour palette consists of peacock greens blended with greys, burnt red, ivory whites, chocolaty caramels, orchid pink and sea-blue.

"Melange is our autumn/winter collection and it includes fine fabrics in landscape colours," says Akhil Duggar, creative director, Madame.

He adds, "This season's collection is an adaptation from the global trends, but we have customised it a little to suit the Indian customer's need."

Well, if you are looking for varied brands under one roof, Catwalk-17 too has some nice collection in women wear. Summing it up, what we saw was nature inspired elements as well as Bohemian accents with a pronounced preference for the classic style in women wear this season.

Passing the book

Those belonging to the borrowing school of thought will love this! British Library on Tuesday unveiled Books on Holiday; a concept that might not have anything much to do with holidays, but has everything else to do with reading, celebration of the hobby, rather a habit and ensuring that the cult grows.

So, 50 of the contemporary books with a British connection were set out on a journey around the city, country, rather world.

Navdeep Singh, head, British Council India, shares, "We have a lot of holidays in India…we were trying to come up with concept that has a larger appeal and reaches the maximum readers, in future we'll try working on more innovating ideas." As for this, for those still wondering; they can be part of the programme too. Read a book, enter the code on website, pass it on and keep the circulation on. A couple of months later, the book starting Chandigarh, could land in Chicago, maybe reach nowhere, stay with one person, change hundred hands…anything. He adds, "We're handing out 50 free books, there is no cost… And the tracking point is the book code, so anybody logging on will enter the book code, that's how we'll know the city and the person."

Chips in Bipin Kumar, manager, "The idea is to bring the readers close, bridge the gap between the author and the reader. The book might get lost, might come back, anything is possible. The idea is also to make everyone read and make the chain as long as possible. They have till December 31 to make the stretch the chain far and wide."

Did the concept draw curious queries from the members present? Setting an example are the last year statistics, the largest chain was of 30 people, the winner being from Jallandhar. Keep reading, keep passing and add to your chains. — Manpriya Khurana

One-stop wonder!
Mohali Junction, a conglomerate of an AC bus station, corporate office space, mall-cum-multiplex with Big Bazaar is set to draw tricity crowds
Mona

Automated car park, ten-screen multiplex, bowling alley, discotheque, swimming pool, Hotel Garden Inn, all next to an air-conditioned bus terminus in three towers, one of them 18 storeys with a helipad on top - well, this is Mohali Junction, which would be partially operational by next year.

A project undertaken by C&C Constructions, it's the first-of-the-kind 'busopolic'. Built on the lines of airports that enjoy duty free retail, this project is only bigger. "Mohali Junction is destined to redefine the skyline of the city with an 18-storey building. A conglomerate of an AC bus station, computerised ticketing and reservation with baggage trolleys, corporate office space, mall-cum-multiplex with Big Bazaar as well, this project will introduce a whole new concept of convenience, commuting and wholesome family entertainment," says Col (retd) CVS Sehgal, general manger, C & C Towers.

The lukewarm response to malls in the tricity is no dampener with Sehgal. "See, it's really huge as compared to any other mall. As a bus junction this area is supposed to have 50,00 footfalls, which is huge business. Then, corporate houses support the hotel and so on; we see a great potential here," he says.

A first in many fields - first Hotel Garden Inn, Cinepolis, Mexican chain of Cineplex that has met with huge success in other Asian countries, bowling alleys and automated car parking (that with a single swipe of card lets you park three levels beneath the ground) - are some features that will pull crowds from the tricity.

And, what's more, so far, the project is sticking to deadlines and sure to achieve the next level. "We cannot afford to miss deadlines because they will lead to heavy penalties," laughs Sehgal.

So far so good; bigger the city, the better!

WORLD TOURISM WEEK
LINE of control

Namita Kohli

It's a cross between art and architecture, a dedication to the geometrical grid of sectors, a celebration of straight, sleek structures and every other shape that is so akin to the city. Chandigarh and Me, an exhibition by Namita Kohli, during the celebrations of World Tourism Week, is a journey into the works inspired by Corbusier's philosophy.

"These works are inspired by Chandigarh and the design philosophy of Corbusier, and his technique of repeating basic geometrical forms." There's a pasting of plain as well as prints, stickers, ink, markers, glitters…some of the works are layered to underscore 'line' as the essential part of the compositions, the focus of the constructions.

The 48 frames have been finished over a period of two years. 'These works have been done sitting here in Chandigarh." She adds, "It's a lovely city and I am proud to be a part of it, to have been born and brought up here. It's interesting and beautiful and at times, monotonous." There's a 'parallel' reflected alongside in the works as well. Predominance of monochromes, at times juxtaposed against a sharp colour in some of the works. A city consisting of geometry of rectilinear grids used to improve circulation, a city of open spaces that provide a green base to the architecture.

To an amateur, the complicated grids might pass for similar looking architectural plan, or an appliance's blueprint. She says, "I am an abstractionist, work from my sub-conscious and am greatly influenced by my experiences, which are reflected in my works." Needless to say, there's an essence of the city that's seeped into every work!

On the cards is a series of segmented pieces put together. "Every work will have a different theme and it'll be a series of these works put together." Meanwhile, this one's out and out for the spirit of the city.

Love hurts
at lifestyletribune@gmail.com or Life Style, The Tribune, Sector 29-C, Chd

I am a 19-year-old boy in a relationship with a girl of the same age, but from a different city. We met at Kurukshetra University previous year, but she soon went off to Panipat for another course. Though we both feel for each other, but since she has left for another city, we have been fighting almost everyday. Now, she says she can do everything for her parents, even leave me. I wonder what has happened to her, how come her feelings have suddenly changed. I have also asked some mutual friends to intervene but it is of no use. I am left with no solution and I am unable to do anything. Please help me to sort this relationship it is very difficult for me to live without her.

Nikhil Sharma, Chandigarh

Young man, take hold of your feelings. I feel there is so much more to life than allowing your emotional self to hurt so much. You are too young to let this feeling rule your life. Concentrate more on your activities in college and find other girls to chat up with. I know it sounds too cold and calculating at the moment but in order to keep our life balanced we must see all sides. A lopsided growth in one area is always detrimental to our physical and emotional health. I would say, give the girl time and space. In our culture girls find it difficult to stand up against their parents. If you truly love her, then her happiness should be your main concern. If you will be understanding and patient, I am sure she will come back.

Lonely heart

I am 20 and have lost my father. I live with my mother and a younger sister. My mother looks after the family business and now there is a lot of pressure on me regarding my career choice. My family feels that I should take up a career in commerce. I feel left out as no one is asking my choice. I was very close to my father and now I feel no one understands me. I also don’t want to marry in the future, but no one in my family takes me seriously. I am confused. Please help.

Rinky Jindal, Chandigarh

You have all my sympathy. You are indeed going through a very difficult period in your life. We all come to times where we get stuck in dilemmas, but I believe that every problem has a solution so please stay calm and do not count yourself alone. I can understand that family pressures must be strong on you regarding career and marriage. But then I feel every girl must strive to educate herself for a career, and as far as your marriage and future is concerned, do not take any hasty decisions. Let it be a question for the future and deal with it as the situation arises. As time goes by and you have healed from your pain your life will have a new meaning and your perspective will change. Do not be harsh on yourself. Treat yourself with love and care. Every thing will turn out well for you.

Have faith

I am a 23-year-old boy, have just finished my MBA and now I am looking for a job. I have been to many job interviews but none to my satisfaction. I lack confidence and I don’t like the attitude of people who interview me. I am an introvert and I feel it’s my nature that is hampering my progress. There was a time when I was full of confidence, but a broken relationship has shattered me completely. Now I don’t seem to have any interest left in life. My friends also seem to keep a distance from me, as I no longer seem to be popular.

Amarinder Bajaj, Chandigarh

Life is beautiful. Change your attitude and the meaning of life would change. Yes, I do agree that relationships keep us going, but this does not mean that you allow the negatives to take over just because of one failed relationship. Please take charge of your emotions and get into the swing of things. One person cannot colour your life. Confidence has to come from within. Remember, universe supports you when you believe in yourself.

It’s kids first

Holidays are the most awaited time of the year, both for elders as well as the kids. It is the time to sit back, relax and just do ‘nothing’. The key to a good holiday lies in proper planning, especially when the little ones are with you. Another good way of ensuring that your holiday with children is a success is to plan trips that they will enjoy. It is not right if the adults are keen on spending more time in the museums and place ‘theme park’ at the end of their list.  And if you want them to cooperate, you should plan a few kid-friendly jaunts on the way such as stopping at theme parks, zoos or aquariums. The itinerary should include enough stops to keep kids entertained. Another important aspect of holidaying with kids is keeping travel time to the minimal and taking frequent breaks. Kids love change and this is a good way to guarantee it. Keeping kids continuously engaged should be the aim on a family vacation. Therefore, make sure enough portable entertainment material like board games, colours, storybooks etc are stocked up.

Saravjot Kaur, Chandigarh

Plan together

It is a pleasure to hear kids discuss their favourite holiday destinations, which are usually the ones they have read or heard of in school. Parents should consider their opinion before deciding upon the venue for a holiday. It is a really pleasant experience to enter into a discussion with kids and then plan the trip keeping in mind their likes and dislikes A trip planned by kids is sure to be fun.

Iqbal Kaur Saini, Mohali

Be a child!

Before planning holidays, consider your child’s health. Kids usually enjoy at resorts or open areas where they can play games and enjoy to the fullest. Take the games along if you are going to open areas. Take the opportunity to let yourself be and be a kid yourself!

I am sorry…

A new study finds out why women apologise more If you think women say ‘I'm sorry’ more than men do, you may be right, scientists say.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, found that women tend to apologise more compared to the opposite sex but it doesn't mean that men are reluctant to admit wrongdoing. It's just that men have a higher threshold for what they think warrants reparation, the scientists said.

When the researchers looked at the number of apologies relative to the number of offences the participants perceived they had committed, they saw no differences between the genders.

"Men aren't actively resisting apologising because they think it will make them appear weak or because they don't want to take responsibility for their actions," said study researcher Karina Schumann, a doctoral student in social psychology at the university. "It seems to be that when they think they've done something wrong they do apologise just as frequently as when women think they've done something wrong. It's just that they think they've done fewer things wrong," says Schumann. — PTI

God of Small Screen

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who returns as the host of the fourth season of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), says that he had debuted on small screen a decade ago against the advice of family, friends and advisors.

"In the year 2000, I was not doing well personally. There was no money and I had no films to work and an offer for television changed all when I decided to anchor Kaun Banega Crorepati," Bachchan recalled.

Talking to reporters here last night, the Bollywood legend said even though he had liked the concept, initially he was apprehensive and hence he was taken to Britain at a studio where the original show Who Wants to be a Millionaire was being recorded.

"I liked the concept and the show and told the KBC producers that if they gave me similar format in India, I would readily do it," he said.

When asked what was the new addition to the show from his side from the time he first hosted the show, the Big B said the only addition was his spectacles.

Bachchan pointed out that in real life, he would never get a chance to ask questions to the people whereas on the show, he could do it. To a question if he would ever consider occupying the hotseat, Bachchan said it was for the producers to take a call on the issue, but he would prefer quitting the show as his "general knowledge" was not good.

"Occupying the hotseat is very difficult," he added. — PTI

Sound of reunion

Fans will get to witness the re-union of the cast of Oscar-winning movie The Sound Of Music in the October 29th episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, according to reports. Julie Andrews, who had the starring role of Maria, and Christopher Plummer, who played her boss turned husband Captain von Trapp in the 1965 film, will be present in addition to the actors who played the seven von Trapp children.

The now 80-year-old Plummer has expressed his disgust with being typecast after playing the memorable role of Captain von Trapp.

"I was a bit bored with the character (of Captain von Trapp). Although we worked hard enough to make him interesting, it was a bit like flogging a dead horse. And the subject matter is not mine. I mean it can't appeal to every person in the world. It's not my cup of tea," Plummer said during an interview with The Boston Globe.

The Canadian actor said he disliked almost every aspect of the project, except working with the English actor Andrews, now aged 74. — ANI

Love, at last

Hollywood star Kate Winslet is so happy with her new-found love that she is considering marrying him and have children together in the future. The 34-year-old actor has completely fallen for male model Louis Dowler, who is also 34, and has been contemplating their future together."As far as Kate is concerned, they could go all the way together - get married, have kids. She's the happiest we've ever seen her, he really brings out a wonderful, carefree side to her that we haven't seen for years," said a friend of the Titanic star.

Winslet separated from her film director husband Sam Mendes after almost seven years of marriage in March and the break-up reportedly hit her hard. But Louis, who started dating the her in July, has brought a smile back to the Oscar winner's face and she has never been happier. "It wasn't that long ago that Kate was heartbroken. But we're all so happy to see her back to herself and looking sensational," said the source. It was recently reported that Winslet had asked Louis to live with her while she films her new movie Contagion in Chicago.

The British screen beauty currently lives in New York's Greenwich Village with her two children, six-year-old son Joe, whose father is Sam, and her nine-year-old daughter Mia from her relationship with ex-husband Jim Threapleton. — PTI

Indecent proposal

Singer Myleene Klass, who is also a presenter for TV show The Screening Room, has accused a Hollywood A-lister of asking her to sign a sex contract when she went to interview him.According to Klass, the Hollywood star was newly married when he propositioned her with a sex contract. The 32-year-old singer said that the celebrity made his move over a lunch meeting around six months ago.

"About six months ago, a newly married Hollywood star asked me to sign some kind of sex contract with him. I just thought: 'Mate, which planet are you from?'"I met him a few times and when I went to interview him it was like something out of a film. We were having lunch and as the starter arrived he launched into it. I was like: 'Bugger I've got main and dessert to go - I'm stuck here!' Then his PA (personal assistant) came over with a confidentiality contract. I just thought: 'Oh my God, your poor wife. I don't want to be a marriage wrecker," said Klass. Earlier this year, the singer had revealed that she had been recieving suggestive text messages by a major Hollywood star. But she says she shunned the celebrity because she did not want to be a marriage wrecker.

Among the celebrities interviewed by Klass through the show are Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Robert De Niro. But none of them seem to have asked her to sign the contract. In July this year, Klass had said she has been offered "more than the interview" by three separate stars."One would bring down Hollywood if the story ever got out. I still have the text, because he is not pinning that on me thank you very much. One even had a wife and child. It's just sad, everyone thinks the grass is always greener," she added.

But the pregnant, mother of one, says will never be tempted to cheat on her partner - no matter how big a Hollywood star he is."Look at all these break-ups and cheating at the moment. I value what I have and I'm not going to worry about complicated things at the moment. Sometimes you've just got to realise this is the best, and just keep making it better." — IANS

3D effect

The Star Wars franchise is all set to get a 3D treatment. George Lucas will re-release the 3D version beginning with Phantom Menace in 2012.

Although 3D versions have been rumoured for some time, Lucas purportedly was waiting until there were enough screens available to make the release a sizable event.

Fox, which released all six original Star Wars films, also would release the 3D versions.

The first episode The Phantom Menacewould be first out of star-dock during early 2012. After that, each film would be released in order at the same time in consecutive years, depending on how well the first re-release does, the Hollywood Reporter said.

Each 3D conversion takes at least a year to complete, with Lucas overseeing the process to make sure each is as perfect as possible.

Lucas said that James Cameron's Avatar convinced him that Star Wars was ready for the state-of-the-art 3D treatment.

Lucas film would use several higher-end conversion houses to work on the project. By late winter or early spring in 2012, the exhibition industry should have all the 3D screens anyone could want for such a release.

In the meantime, Lucas plans a comprehensive Blu-ray Disc set of the six films next year, which would include upgraded picture and sound quality, new deleted scenes and special features of the cult movie franchise. — PTI
