IBM holds mega placement camp: A mega placement camp was organised by the IBM at Rayat Bahra College, Rail Mazra, in the district today. More than 4,000 students from various engineering colleges of North India participated. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, Technical Education, inaugurated the camp. Laying emphasis on self-employment, he said during the past 15 years the scenario of technical education had witnessed a sea change. “There is 26 per cent more demand for seats, but only 40 per cent students get placed with the companies they desire. Rest all end up with jobs they don’t feel content with. In this situation, engineers should become entrepreneurs and not wait for an opportunity,” he added. The Punjab Government was soon coming up with a technical teachers training institute at Jalandhar. So far 13 technical teachers training programmes had already been conducted for the teachers, Suresh Kumar added.Counselling result declared: S.K. Sharma, chairman of the Association of Self-Financed Colleges of Education (ETT), Punjab, in a press note here said the results of the third phase of the counselling for admission to ETT course had been made available on the website. The applicants should log in the association’s website and the successful candidate had been advised to report to their allotted colleges by September 29. The classes would start from September 30.
Freshers’ party: The Doaba Group of Colleges, Chhokeran campus, near Rahon, organised a freshers’ party to welcome the new students on Monday. Deputy Commissioner Shruti Singh inaugurated the function. Mohinder Singh Batth, Dr H.S. Batth, and S.S. Sangha, chairman, president and executive vice-chairman, respectively, of the Doaba Khalsa Trust, and Dr Daljit Singh, director, addressed the gathering. Students presented a cultural programme.

Eye check-up camp: A two-day free eye check-up camp, organised by the Sant Nirankari Mandal, concluded here on Monday. As many as 880 patients were examined at the camp and 40 cataract operations performed at the Civil Hospital under the supervision of Senior Medical Officer Achla Bhatia. Villagers protest against admn: Hundreds of villagers of nearby Khalian raised their voice against the local administration dealing with rural areas against the indifferent and unwanted interference of the administration to stop the ongoing construction work of lying sewerage and disposal of dirty water being managed by villagers on their own. A Deputation of the villagers, led by former minister Joginder Singh Maan met SDM Amarjit Pal and the Block Development Officer to apprise them of the situation. The official assured them to take the required steps early.
Two scanning centres sealed: Within a week, a team of the Health Department inspected nine scanning centres and sealed two of them for alleged irregularities. Senior Medical Officer Dr Rajiv Gupta told The Tribune here that all the scanning centres had been repeatedly instructed to maintain the required record and necessary staff with the permission of the department.
